for me, it wasn't Modern Warfare 2. it wasn't Undisputed 09. it wasn't Resident Evil 5. hell, it wasn't even Arkham Asylum. (not because it sucked, but because rocksteady kept the game very hush, hush, so it promised nothing, but ended up being amazing.)

the ONE game that lived up to it's promise was Dragon Age. the game is just consistently good. from the cerebral combat, from the story, to the nearly infinite amount of sidequests... the game delivered on all fronts. hell, it's even longer then most RPG's this gen clocking in at around 40 hours. probably more if you're strategic in battle. the game is a dream come true for Bioware fans who loved Mass Effect, but wanted an experience more akin to Bioware's earlier work.

it's no KOTOR 3, but it's definitely GOTY 09'.

Personally, I feel like Halo Wars did everything they said they were going to do. It fleshed out the world, made an RTS that worked very well on consoles, and looked and played great. The co-op alone was a blast.

Assassin's Creed 2. I remember thinking of a few things from the original I was hoping they'd fix, well they fixed them all, plus added in tons more. Probably my game of the year.

Dragon Age delivered more than I had hoped in spades. Not only best game of the year by a mile, but possibly the best game this decade!

I'd actually call Dragon Age one of the most disappointing games of the year, but to each their own. I was surprised that Tales of Monkey Island not only lived up to the previous games in the series, but in some ways surpassed them. It more than delivered on its promises as a true sequel to the legendary franchise.

No game lived up to the hype more than AC2. Dragon Age alsomore than surpassed my hype, because I was expecting it to fail, but it ended up being my GotY. As for Uncharted 2, it delievered, but I was a little dissapointed because a lot of the great moments had already been spoiled for me by the internet.

Is there going to be some sort of release where all 5 parts are sold as one? I loved the first two MIs, couple of my favourite games of all time - but I've not played one since "Curse of.." and I was under the impression the franchise would never get back to what it was.

Yeah, there will be a complete 5-part release in a few months (maybe in stores), if you don't feel like buying the season online.

I should probably also mention that it's somewhere between the second and third games in style and tone, and the game gradually gets much darker as you get to the later chapters.

yeah sorry, I wasn't trying to imply your choice was no good, just seemed a little odd. My first RTS was Dune 2 on an amiga, so I've been playing them right from the beginning. Civ rev got great reviews but after playing Civ 4 I hated it and could not overlook the decisions they'd taken to make the game more playable on consoles. My experience with Halo Wars was pretty brief but I was left with a similar impression.

Batman AA caught me by surprise. I didn't believe they'd deliver the game they would even though they hyped it as much. But man what a great game. Uncharted 2 also delivered well.

No I get you completely. I enjoyed Halo Wars a lot, but yes, here in SW it is a bit unpopular to say you like it. It could be that I am a hugh Halo fanboy, but I also thought the simple yet complex strategy of HW was a great throwback to the simpler RTS games I loved like Warcraft, before the uber-complex RTS sim-like games. I do want to play Civ Rev, but I always forget about it, to be honest.

Dragon Age and Resident Evil 5 for me. Dragon Age is Bio-Ware so I don't need to say more about it. I didn't know what to expect in RE5 at all. I don't play shooters that much and the only RE I played before this was on a PS1 demo kiosk at Sears back in the mid 90s. I also thought the demo was crummy. But a friend suggested it and I rented it and had a blast. I ended up renting it for like 2 months. It's the only game from early this year that I still want to go back and play. I loved pretty much everything about that game, the slow combat, the graphics, the QTEs and the cinematic feel that the game had with all of the cut scenes and qte stuff, but it never crossed the point where it was too much; it seemed like the perfect balance of the two.

KZ2. The game had everything going against it and it came out on top despite the naysayers and CGI trailer controversy. Coming back from a 6.5 to a 9.0 is an incredible accomplishment for Sony and Guerilla games.

Assassins Creed 2 did, it made up for all the predecessors faults and made it overall a much better game.

Dragon Age Origins was just simply amazing, and an rpg every bioware fan MUST play

Halo ODST is also mentionworthy, i expected fun over the top action and great multiplayer, and that is exactly what i got :D

Dragon age FAR surpassed what i thought it'd be.

I was sleeping on the game until about 2 weeks before release, after looking at some CGI videos on gametrailers, i decided i'd give it a go, and i was NOT dissapointed. It's now my GOTY :)

In my opinion Uncharted 2: Among Thieves delivers what it promised for me, not only being great but surpassing it prequel while doing so. The pacing for this game was much better than the first one along with great gameplay. Great multiplayer along with great coop, and I love the exploration for this game the most.

Wish I could say the say about Infamous. I'm half way through the second town Warren, and the game is getting very repetitive. Sure the powers are fun but once you clean up a city the bad guys still return even though it says they won't, all the side missions are the same and the bad guys are too. I'm going to finish it, but I don't see it as AAA yet.

My games of the year are MW2, AC2, GH5, Beatles Rockband, Uncharted 2, FEAR 2.

from what I have played. Arkham Asylum Dragon Age Honorable mention: Red Faction Guerrilla Men of War - Though honestly Arkham seems to edge its way as one of the most impressive game I have played this year. So much love has gone into crafting the game, and despite its faults, its one of the most outstanding and intelligently crafted action games... despite being a new IP. - Other titles like Borderlands, ArmA II, Empire Total War, Dawn of War II deserve a mention.

Uncharted 2 and inFamous come to mind.

I had extremely high expectations for Uncharted 2 based on the quality of the first game and the fact that it's Naughty Dog, and they still blew me away with both the campaign and the online multiplayer!

As for inFamous, it's an awesome sandbox-action/adventure game with an amazing story and fun gameplay.
This was a pleasant surprise from Sucker Punch.

There will always be bad guys, but they are much less prevalent in clean parts of the city. They run rampant in areas they control, but are essentially a non-factor as far as difficulty is concerned in clean areas.

Thankfully, powers continue to be unlocked at a steady pace throughout the game, and the side-missions also offer some variety to alieviate some feeling of repetition. You could also vary your approach to a certain mission to produce more variety on your own. I guess I have a much higher tolerance for repetition than most, because I didn't start to feel bored until near the end of my second playthrough.

Also, the story should pick up soon and that's another thing that will keep you hooked on the game. It's awesome and the ending is epic!

Demon's Souls. I heard it was deliciously unforgiving, but I didn't fully understand what the import reviews were referring to till I got my hands on it. It's my greatest surprise of the year, and maybe even my personal GOTY. (Dragon Age, Assassin's Creed 2, ODST and Fallout 3 are all terrific titles that delivered for me as well.)

For me, it's BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM (because I'm such a batman whore): which is entirely not a bad thing)

And thank god this game didn't flop, instead it got AAA status!! (although I felt this game is a bit overrated)

Sure I know Uncharted 2 and Infamous are better game, but c'mon man this is comic book game!!
