Epic Mickey Just flopped, GT5 just flopped, Splinter Cell : Conviction flopped, and Final Fantasy XIII flopped. Those come to mind.
I think Donkey Kong flopped as well, if I can recall.
I know Kirby, God of War 3, and Halo Reach didn't flop though.

Nobody said anything about Halo Reach, but yeah I'm still wondering why OP says GoW3 flopped? And personally I don't think FFXIII flopped enough, that game is easily one of the worst games I've played this gen and really doesn't deserve more than a 6.0.
I think its been a great year :| some of the best games this gen have been released this year and I am having a hard time keeping up with it. There have been some pretty epic and surprising flops but that keeps it interesting, good to see the consistent companies like Nintendo and Blizzard still delivering.
SapSacPrime
It has, and I highly doubt anyone here could really keep up with all of the releases this year on 360/PS3 but people right now are just talking exclusives.
I agree with you, there were a lot of games that disappointed me. Besides those you noted, FF13, FF14, Alpha Protocoll, Dead Rising 2, Force Unleashed 2 and Atelier Rorona disappointed me because I simply expected more. And those are just the few that are in my memory and I haven't played GT5 yet ^^
Heavy Rain didn't flop, nor did GoW3. But you're missing FFXIII which was as equal a flop as GT5 i'd say. navstar29Heavy rain did flop.
Okay then. I've enjoyed a good amount of these flops (FFXIII, Other M, Kirby's Epic yarn, Castlevania Lords of Shadow (I believe ended up a flop), will probably like DKC Returns)
I've been pleased this year for the most part. Most of the flops have only been by a 0.5 anyways. technically a flop, but not really that big of a whoop either.

So many games flopped this year, and there was such massive expectations for this whole year that it was a even bigger dissapointment. Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, Epic Mickey, Donkey Kong, Metroid Other M, Kirby and somewhat God of War 3. And Gran Turismo, big time!
So what do you say? Just an unfortanate coincidence or are games getting worse.

Or are people's expectations too high?
probably this , all your so called flops are (almost) all great games , but you bashing people just need to appreciate what you got more , ive started gaming early 90's in the 8bit era , ive had lot of racing fun with OUT RUN fr example , something like GT5 was SCi-FI back then:now all the spoiled kids saying GT5 is a flop for whatever reason , you should all deserve to have only a 8 bit console and after few years be allowed switch to 16bit an so on , then you will know how good the todays games are when witnessing the evolution.

Since when does a flop mean a game is bad? Just because it didn't get as high a score as hoped?
Games aren't getting worse, gamers are getting worse with this stupid hype BS!
You forgot Fable 3, Final Fantasy 13, Splinter Cell Conviction, Medal of Honor, and arguably Alpha Protocol (though the hype for it mostly came from the people who liked it anyway). Decent year for games (most of those flops are still good), but bad for System Wars.So many games flopped this year, and there was such massive expectations for this whole year that it was a even bigger dissapointment. Heavy Rain? Alan Wake? GoW3? GT5?!
Funny really. GT5 deserves a much higher score you've probably never played it, it's the best driving SIMULATOR out there and always will be, according to gs its load times terrible, but I disagree, after the install it's very fast, Alan Wake is amazing story wise and environment wise, Heavy Rain will be my favoite story no matter what, and GoW3 get out. It's amazing.

But still, there's an awful lot of good games on that list too. Keeping track of flops is fun but at the end of the day there's a huge chasm between a FF XIV-like flop and a DKCR-like flop, so much so that it's strange to even see them on the same list...Well as long as games are considered "flops" because the review missed the "hype" by a half of a point then there will be lots of flops. It's a good thing I don't play reviews.
It certainly is the year of the flop. GT5 was probably the biggest one this year.racing1750I dunno, GT5 flopped by one point. Other games flopped by more. Epic Mickey missed the mark by two points, for instance.
Why does not precisely meeting bloated expectations mean a flop? I don't get your logic.majoras_wrath
The most sensible post in this entire thread, hardly any of those games actually flopped. Out in the real world an AA score is a very good score, here of course logic escapes most individuals.
we are talking about factual flops, not "imo flops"Red Dead Redemption. This may come as a surprise but I didn't find the game to be immersive enough.

Why are there all of a sudden so many people that act like they don't understand what the term flop means on SW? Hype is set, by vote, for what a game will score on GS. If it scores lower, it is a flop. This is not saying it is a bad game, or saying it is a commercial failure. While those may be definitions of the word flop, they are not what is being referred to when the term is used on SW.
I dunno, GT5 flopped by one point. Other games flopped by more. Epic Mickey missed the mark by two points, for instance. but epic mickey did not got delayed like over 9000 times for the last 5 years...I think that is what he means with "biggest flop of the year" although taht FFXIII is also high on that list...anyway why are we surprised about a wii game flopping? seriously its obvious, if its not mario, it will flop![QUOTE="racing1750"]It certainly is the year of the flop. I dunno, GT5 flopped by one point. Other games flopped by more. Epic Mickey missed the mark by two points, for instance.Point difference means nothing, otherwise Elemental would have taken the cake -- hyped AA-AAA and got less than B. You have to look at the longevity of the hype, the sheer amount of hype, and GT5 was the biggest hyped game that I've seen since Halo 3. Halo 3 met its hype though. :)[QUOTE="racing1750"]It certainly is the year of the flop. GT5 was probably the biggest one this year.ianuilliam

How is Kirby not a flop? It's essentially the same Kirby game with a different look and it didnt sell well at all. DKCR is selling well even though I think its just a rehash of the original.
FFXIII was very dissapointing for me as a FF fan.
Because it wasn't hyped AAAHow is Kirby not a flop? It's essentially the same Kirby game with a different look and it didnt sell well at all..

I blame GT5. Which is not a flop, despite GS review. This much be the 3rd or 4th "year of the flop" thread already today.

[QUOTE="Kokuro_Kun"][QUOTE="Gxgear"]I blame GT5. Which is not a flop, despite GS review. was it hyped AAA on gamespot ...that makes it a flop. i don't understand how that make it a flop, because of what other people who i don't even know wanted it to be? isn't a flop a game that doesn't sell well, i mean thats what happens when a movie flops, i mean you don't see movies getting bad reviews but it makes a whole lot of money called a flop do you? Gt5 is going to sell millions and when i asked all my friends who enjoy the series they say its a great game and are happy with it. Most of you guys on here that are complaining about its 8.0 score on here are people who don't A. own a ps3 and just want to see it fail because its a ps3 exclusive, B. aren't even interested in racing games period. I mean is this what gaming has become, just because a guy on here gave it a 8.0 its a flop? if i remember correctly game informer gave it a 9.5 so, again how is this game a flop? This much be the 3rd or 4th "year of the flop" thread already today.

Doesn't really bother me at all, I enjoyed the "flop" that was Alan Wake, a bit too repetitive but it was fun, and I honestly don't get why its graphics isn't talked about more, they were superb. Also Bioshock 2 is my favorite FPS this year and that was a flop. Plus I'm really enjoying the flop that is New Vegas, 8 hours in and I haven't even tackled the main story yet, and no bugs either.
How did Heavy Rain, Donkey kong, and God of war 3 flop?? ohhh ofcourse they didnt get AAA scores so they must be bad right. lol wow system wars u must not like much video games at all then since 90% of them score below 90. Must suck to be u guys =/reaver-x
that's not the point. If a game is hyped AAA and scores lower it's a flop.
also note that flop=/= bad game

so, if one reviewer "who probably likes way different genres of games and likes different things than you and I" gives a game a score thats lower than what i feel it deserves its a flop? So what one person says, it means its a flop? i don't understand the logic, if the game sells badly that means its a flop, not because of the score and again please tell me where gamespot is the holy grail of videogames that determines if a game is a flop or not. lets take GT5 for instance some sites it got an A or 9's, some sites it gots B or 8's, some people dig it, some people thought it was meh, so how can we surely say its a flop, i say we see how much it sales which we all know its already hit the 1 million mark.
The only flops this year I've seen that are noteworthy are Naughty Bear and Alpha Protocol. I loved Alan Wake. My favorite games this year have been Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Blood Stone 007.
