It's not always about graphics. Sure, we all love polygons, pixels, and all of that good stuff. It's perfect fuel for the System Wars fire. However, PC gaming isn't just about looking the best, it's about being the first to play some of the most unique experiences ever.
Let's be honest, a game like Mount and Blade would never have worked on the console. Not becuase the game is overly complicated or has the best graphics we've ever seen. It wouldn't have worked because the mentality of gamers on the console is completely different. On the consoles, gamers see games as a product. You buy the product and you enjoy it until a new one comes out. On the PC, gamers see a game as more than just a product for their entertainment, but as a service and a creative platform that could be used to further expand the original idea of the game. Some PC gamers see an incomplete, misguided mess of a game like Mount and Blade was back in 2007 as the foundation to the game they've always wanted to play.
This mentality and vision has given birth to some of the best games of all time. This tradition is still alive today with the Napoleonic Warfare DLC. Somewhere down the road an eager fan of Mount and Blade said "hey, what if I had a musket." Thus, the mod Mount and Musket was born. Instead of whaling on each other with swords and spears, players were battling all 17th century styIe on large battlefields with muskets and cannons.
Taleworlds, the developer of Mount and Blade took note and offered the developers of the mod a chance to turn their idea in to retail success. The result is the Napoleonic Wars DLC for Mount and Blade Warband.
Launch trailer.
Before you say "oh Wasdie you fool, it's just some stupid DLC" you need to read the features of this "DLC". It's a little more than some extra armor for our horses.
- Accurate early 19th century weapons, uniforms and environments.
- Massive multiplayer battles with up to 250 players. (specially patched in for this DLC)
- Five nations with more than 220 unique units to choose from. (there aren't even 220 units in Mount and Blade Warband)
- A wide range of artillery pieces ranging from field cannons to mortars, capable of firing cannonballs, canister or explosive shells, all fully controllable by players.
- Destructible environments. Players can use a range of artillery and explosives to destroy various buildings, bridges and other structures.
- Finely crafted game balance insuring player skill is the hero of the battlefield, not the gun or the sword.
- Construct barricades, dig trenches, and rig explosives with the multi-purpose Engineer class.
- Special musician units with drums, fifes, bagpipes or trumpets; able to play historically accurate tunes. All recorded and played by award winning musicians. (What other game lets you play a bagpipe in the middle of a massive battle? None. That's how many.)
- More than 40 classical background music tracks.
All of this for $10? Sign me up.
Just for clarification. You get to play as one of the soliders. Everything you see in these pictures are players. No AI. There is a Total War styIe camera for a commander who can direct their entire side if they want to use it.
Why am I making this thread on System Wars? PC gaming isn't always about better graphics or controls or more ways to play, it's because with PC gaming there is a different mentality. A game like this would never exist without PC gaming. Somebody tried something radical and it worked better than they could have hoped for. The gaming world is a better place because of things like this.
So many games in the past were built like this. Counterstrike, Team Fortress, Minecraft just to name a few. This is one of the biggest advantages that PC gaming has and is a reason why nobody sould ever hope that PC gaming dies. These kind of games lead the way for innovation that paves the road for the next generation of games. If it wasn't for PC gaming, who knows what kind of games we would be playing today.
So there. If you have a PC, buy Mount and Blade Warband and the Napoleonic Wars DLC. Warband is cheap on Steam right now too.
