Here are some issues I have with this. First, like people on the site questioned, is this 29 million more Blu-ray players, or a total of 29 million will be in homes. This leads into the next issue. The estimate said 13 million of those 29 million will be the PS3. Again, is that 13 million total in homes, or sold by the end of the year?

Next, you say that it will probably double next year. Well, what if stand-alone players drop in price below the cost of a PS3? That is less incentive to buy a PS3 over a stand-alone player.

Finally, unless those casual consumers you mentioned at the end are hardcore gamers (which seems contradictory to me) without any other system to play games on, it is not a necessity. That was an incredibly lame attempt at strengthening your point.

Taken straight from the article:

Here's a quick bit for you: Sony will surge their Blu-ray power into a mighty sword and decapitate demons with their otherworldly blade! Or they'll simply attempt to bring Blu-ray technology to a wide demographic of homes by 2009. We just figured that was a better lead-in, truthfully.

Sony is looking to use their Blu-ray technology's victory over the new defunct HD DVD technology as the prime selling point of the PlayStation 3, with a projected 29 million homes owning a player by the end of the fiscal calendar, thanks to a report from the analysts over at Strategy Analytics. A good majority of those sales will be in Europe, where Sony's brand is still strong compared to their initial lackluster sales in North America. The report suggests that 13 million of the 29 will be due to the PlayStation 3's built-in Blu-ray player.

That answers your questions and proves that Sony heavily doubts they'll win which contradicts TC.

glad sony is doing well, the 360 brings nothing new to gaming, its just a glorified low spec pc and the pc get all its aaa's anyway, dumbed down as they are.

How many gamers or how many people out of everyone with a DVD playing piece of hardware? I know that I do use my 360 as my primary DVD player, but I am a gamer. My parents, parents friends, grandmother, and other older relatives all use a stand-alone DVD player.

IF true, its a hollow victory. Console sales, thanks to this, will not be a viable source to say one of the three big brands won this generation because one of the threes numbers will be greatly inflated due to blu-ray sales only. Sure, alot of people will buy a PS3 because its the best option to get a blu-ray player. And alot, I mean ALOT of those people wont buy even the first game. Listen very carefully, and you can try to come up with some kind of rebuttal but its going to fall flat. If games are still not being bought on the PS3 at the rate they are on the 360 and the Wii then it still wont be feeding the developers pockets, therefore the lucrative consoles for them to develop for will STILL BE the 360 and the Wii. Lets get crazy for a minute, and say over the next two years the PS3 console sales come up to around... 40 to 50 million. All of a sudden, fanboys for the PS3 will run around saying they have crushed the 360 and the Wii. But how silly will they look when the software sales still have 360 and Wii titles demolishing PS3 titles??? If you dont think that makes a difference, you should go back to basic math and pay better attention.

aliasfreak

what makes you think it wont be the cheapest bluray? as of right now, it is the cheapest bluray available in the market and its going to continue that way. i mean, we already know that the ps3 will drop in price this year, so it will continue to be the cheapest, therefore the best choice.

i bought the ps3 as movie first/games second, but my reason i bought a ps3 because it was the best bluray out there and gave me an addition to play games when i got nothing to do. i am sure ppl feel the same way, so why not get something that benefits you for a cheaper or equal the price of a stand alone.

Even better, go around and ask people who own all three consoles how many games they have BOUGHT for their system of choice. I currently have 35, and I am getting ready to add more to it.

I thought that they meant that there would be that many in homes, but I didn't read the original article (the one by Strategy Analytics), so I didn't know if the wording was different there.

yup..the 360 has NOTHING to look foward to in 2008 :| you just proved you're a fanboy with that comment.

2009 is going to be an interesting year in the system wars board since there will be alot of new IP's and less sequels releasing on both consoles.

Fact is, my 360 these two years I've owned it have given me a great gaming experience, just because PS3 wins that won't disappear ok? Of course PS3 will be better later, but the gaming experience will NEVER go away, which is what a true gamer should care about, not who wins or loses.

I will get a PS3 later regardless if it wins or loses because I want to play even more games.

I don't know, because I find it hard to believe that something that comes with a Blu-ray player, hard drive, wireless capabilities, and free online access would continue to cost less than a simple Blu-ray player.

Also, I found a Blu-ray player on Amazon that costs less than a PS3 (see below). Not by much, but considering that all BR players used to cost more, I see no reason that the difference in price couldn't continue to increase.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-S300-1080p-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B000PALZE0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206732600&sr=8-2

Edit: And if you don't like that example of a BR player because it is on sale from $500, look at Walmart's website where it still costs less at the everyday price:

ok my last system was the sega saturn (ps2 brother left it to me and only used it for movies), so i have not been a gamer since then, but when i heard the ps3 not only a gaming system, but also an awesome bluray player, i thought it was pretty cool because i wanted a bluray. i waited until a price drop and bought the 40gig (20% kmart discount) last year. i was very happy with my bluray, it played well with my 120HZ HDTV, but i also realize that its not only a player but a game console, so i started doing research and going to site such as this looking for good games. i ended up buying cod4, warhawk, devil may cry, and rockband. i was very pleased that one system can do all these. so what i am saying is that you might by the ps3 for one thing (movies)but you might end up using it for something other than what you intended such as for games, communication, internet, etc. if that can happen to me, i am sure there are millions of ppl will end up like that. so its a win win situation

at $30 a disc, BR is still irrelevant. And I own a PS3. I'd sure love to get some more BR movies, but $10 to $20 more and I'd get a game instead. hmm the choice isnt hard. Sony needs to cut prices on BR movies now!

It's becoming a movie station. What a flop. These numbers are bogus though, try 5 million. No one cares about Blu-Ray movies yet. Who in their right mind is willing to pay 50$ for a movie? Regular DVDs look great on HDTVs, Blu-Ray isn't that big of a deal to make me pay double for my movies.

Poeple that want a BR player, will generally never buy a game console

from 15 to 30 dallors not 50. movie/games station. not a flop at all if it can out sell the 360 in 2007 what makes the 360 then. plus hdtv have been climbing very very fast. why wouldn't blu-ray rise with them. why not upgrade your movie player with your tv as well.

things are changing. ps3 bluray is top of the line player. it is future proof thru firmware, so it will never get outdated in technology

[QUOTE="thrones"]Why should I care about Sony winning? I care about playing good games.dhjohns

We have a winner!! So many fanboys here act like they have stock in MS, Nintendo, or Sony.

um... maybe cause more sales = more money = more games?

why is that SOOO complicated for people here to understand?

its a very good estimate.

that would be your opinion...

I could just as easily say it is a terrible estimate... see what I am getting at?

But elitists that want the best, will never go for it, i know, because i know some such people, the fact alone that it is a game console, will never allow them to to get it

As for those that look for cheap player, there are cheaper ones out there

Of course some will buy, just not many IMO

wow. weather you are buying the ps3 for movies or for games or for both, either way sony wins console/movie market. i know its not going to be 29 million ps3 bluray is going to be sold, but the majority will buy the ps3 because of its multimedia capabilities. With the ps3 you get a top of the line bluray player that is future proof due to its capability to upgrade thru firmware and also, the ps3 offers the ultimate gaming experience that a console can offer. Games such as MGS, FF13, RE5, GTA5, etc around the corner will make sure that the ps3 will always be in use by their users without the wear and tear (RROD) of their competition. If 29 million will be sold by the end of 08, then 09 it will double, dare i as triple the sales of bluray, spefically the PS3 (games/movies) as casual consumer will begin to realize that this systems is not for luxury but a necessity for everyday living, just like tv, computers, cars, etc.

If you dont think that makes a difference, you should go back to basic math and pay better attention.

ok my last system was the sega saturn (ps2 brother left it to me and only used it for movies), so i have not been a gamer since then, but when i heard the ps3 not only a gaming system, but also an awesome bluray player, i thought it was pretty cool because i wanted a bluray. i waited until a price drop and bought the 40gig (20% kmart discount) last year. i was very happy with my bluray, it played well with my 120HZ HDTV, but i also realize that its not only a player but a game console, so i started doing research and going to site such as this looking for good games. i ended up buying cod4, warhawk, devil may cry, and rockband. i was very pleased that one system can do all these. so what i am saying is that you might by the ps3 for one thing (movies)but you might end up using it for something other than what you intended such as for games, communication, internet, etc. if that can happen to me, i am sure there are millions of ppl will end up like that. so its a win win situation

I didnt say that no one would buy a PS3 for blu-ray and not pick up games. It will happen. But it seems people are under this idea that there will be a mass exodus of games being bought to match the number of PS3s sold for blu-ray consoles and it just wont happen that way. Which is my point, that the numbers of consoles sold wont reflect in the number games sold, at least nowhere near to that degree.

13 million of those will be PS3's. Let's see, XBox 360 will have over 20 million sold by the end of 2008 year I think. Most of the PS3 being sold are in Europe where these people are buying it as a Blu-Ray player and not a game system. With the XBox 360 and future systems, you won't need to buy any Blu-Ray players or discs. You can pay $10-$15 and download the movies or other content and watch it in 1080p, just like Blu-Ray on your HDTV. The future is digital distribution in the next 5-10yrs. Every analyst have been saying this. So even though Blu-Ray is doing great now, it'll be obsolete within the next 5-10yrs if Digital Distribution takes off. In the meantime, I will continue to buy DVD's CHEAP and watch them upscaped to 1080p on my XBox 360 Elite.

its a very good estimate.

It's more like a guess if anything. Most of the time the analyst are way off.

They are going to sell 20 million titles in the next 9 months after it took this long to hit 9 million?SpruceCaboose
The article says blu ray players, not the PS3 specifically.
