I see in several post Xbox owners talk about achivements like its the second comming of christ.

What is so cool about these achivements? Isnt it just some list, where 1 of them might say you must kill 5 guys with said weapon in 10 seconds, or squash 10 mellons in this or that level etc? What do you get for completing these? Its displayed on your Xbox community page or something?

Sorry, but whoop dee doo?

This is by no means a flame post. Im just trying to understand whats so good about these achivements since so many people talk about them, and i have no friends with a 360.

I thought they were stupid at first too, but they got me to play more of the game than I usually would have. Added some replay value, like I wouldnt even touch GH2 anymore if I didnt want the achievements.

There is some achievement on steam, but if it was not for the stupid weapon they unlock, I would not even care. For me a gamerscore=life meter. If someone got 50k+ he needs help, more than a 40 hours/week WOW player

there not gods gift.

but they are fun and nice little extras to work at in some cases. Getting the one man army in GTA 4 was a blast.

Achievements increases your Gamerscore, your Gamerscore is like your GameSpot's level, by the looks of it you don't post alot but you view, read, watch videos, etc. and it increases your GameSpot level. Everyone can view your Gamerscore and they can also view individual Achievements for that game so easily, anytime with Xbox Live. Some of these Achievements unlocks GamerPictures and GamerThemes.

Achievements is like a game within a game. For example, there's an Achievement for GTA IV where if you do a Wheelie for 300 yards, you'll get an Achievement. PS3 owners wouldn't try to do that Wheelie and if they did, they have noway in proving it. Achievements just increase the replay value of a game.

Certain games make good use of the system, like Saint's Row or the Orange Box. They make you explore more and add value to the game.

its for bragging rights.
Not Alot of achievments are hard to get but the ones that are earn u respect in online games i find at least. plus they add an extra fun goal to games. Its like yeah i just did something intresting and it rewarded me something for it...its not much but it helps the enjoyment and can make some games last a long time.

Yup, that's it in a nutshell… :)

Definitely, not the second coming but still fun and, surprisingly, very rewarding…(and not at all silly looking to someone looking in from the outside.)

It's also a genius marketing move. Assuming that a multiplatform release is equal on two systems (say PS3 and 360) owners of both systems are more than likely going to get the 360 version just for the achievements…

It's like an ultimate trump card…

The reason I believe they're pointless is due to the fact there will always be someone ahead of you when it comes to these achievement points. What will a new 360 owner next week get out of from achievements?

Well it's the same reason why you would play games like Devil May Cry 3 on Dante Must Die and get a SS rating. However with achievements it gives something reminiscent of a virtual ribbon that says to you "Congratulations" whether or not you get anything real from that isn't the real purpose of it. The purpose is, is for developers to congratulate players on doing something in their game, whether it's killing around 50 000 zombies in Dead Rising, or beating Call of Duty 4's Mile High Club on veteran. (Which I did and it was awesome) tells the players pretty much saying "good work, kudos to you."

Bottem line, achivements just make you feel good for doing something.

Havent games been doing this since the SNES days? I still dont see how having a unified score system adds anything to a game. You cant even buy cool stuff with them, do you at least get codes or things of that nature unlocked after an achievement is completed?

Exactly, when you first hear about them you think they are stupid, but once you start getting them...it becomes addicting (to some people at least).

Achievements are like high scores imo. Some ppl go for them. Some ppl dont care and just play. I like to go for some but it has to be a fun game. Had no problem going for seriously and it was the most satisfying. Either that or Jordan on expert.

For Xbox.com they have contests and such, when you reach a certain amount of achievements at a certain amount of time, you receives prizes. This is why the Xbox community is so great, it can make nothing into something. If you think Achievements doesn't add replay value or whatever, then I have a feeling you're going to hate these Home trophies with a passion.

Ok they work like this, you have a gamerscore which is displayed on your gamercard, unlocking achievements gives you gamerpoints which go to your gamerscore.

Different achievements come with their own little task, for example, kill 10,000 players online for 50 gamerpoints or beat the mission in 2:30 for 30 gamerpoints and so on and on.

All the achievements you get go to your total gamerscore and you just keep racking up points and getting your gamerscore high. Some achievements are hard and soe are easy. Then you can also use the as bragging rights (which alot of people on xbox live do) and have them all listed in your gamer profile to show off and they are even displayed on alot of websites too.

But i guess the tc doesnt own a 360 cause everyone knows how big and popular achievements are and they play a big role in alot of the games now.Too bad you guys dont have em on PS3.

Yes, but the unlock a vid thing is in the game itself. 360 games still have things like that plus gamerscore. Its just a nice way of adding replay value to a game. Its good if you have lots of friends on xbox live. Its pretty silly not to like them because they dont take away from the game at all and if you dont like them you are just hating because you dont like the 360.

It's just the spreading trend that children need to be awarded something no matter what they do.

I couldn't care less about achievements or future trophies.

Why play a game at all? What do you get from it? Nothing.

But i can bet you at least want to FINISH the game, beat your goal of completing it. Achievements are like that, it's a goal that you can choose to beat. Think there pointless? Guess what? Ignore them. Guarentee when these "trophys" come out for the playstation you'll be all over them and there the same thing.

It boosts your gamerscore then what? you go from being ranked 3,245,456 to 3,134,467?

Its funny how you are bashing achievements blindly dont knock it till you rock it kid most games do have unlockables whne you unlock an achievement and some make you look somewhere and explore the game the way you wouldnt have for example GTA4 im tring to fly under every bridge in the game with a helicopter sounds pointless at first then when you actually try it its hella hard and requires skill.

So please stop posting foolish opinions and do some research hell even try em out I promise youll like it ;)

Kinda like in Uncharted when you get a hundred 100 headshots you unlock a video? OMG THEY TURNED NOTHING INTO SOMETHING! Hate Home trophies with a passion? More like just ignore them.

Why do people keep assuming achievements are new to the gaming world? and really what research is there to do? you complete a task, then get points added to your gamerscore for it. Its really not that hard to follow.

Hey while you enjoy flying under bridges and then become yet another needle in a hay stack in the Live community, Ill continue to enjoy the story and later play online if its worth it.

CreepyBacon

Why play a game at all? What do you get from it? Nothing.

But i can bet you at least want to FINISH the game, beat your goal of completing it. Achievements are like that, it's a goal that you can choose to beat. Think there pointless? Guess what? Ignore them. Guarentee when these "trophys" come out for the playstation you'll be all over them and there the same thing.

someone sounds a little jaded....

Question:
[QUOTE="xTHExJUICEx"]The reason I believe they're pointless is due to the fact there will always be someone ahead of you when it comes to these achievement points. What will a new 360 owner next week get out of from achievements?xTHExJUICEx

Answer:

Havent games been doing this since the SNES days? I still dont see how having a unified score system adds anything to a game. You cant even buy cool stuff with them, do you at least get codes or things of that nature unlocked after an achievement is completed?

Kinda like in Uncharted when you get a hundred 100 headshots you unlock a video? OMG THEY TURNED NOTHING INTO SOMETHING! Hate Home trophies with a passion? More like just ignore them.

Welp you cant convince them all of course achievements have been out since the begining of gaming from sonic to metroid.

A needle in the live community? Dude wth are you talking about seriously mad cow disease is running rampant I was talking about my own personal experience every gamer on any console has their own personal experience hell achievements add more to it you can take it or leave it the 360 brings achievements in a new form which has yet to be done and will be quick to be imitated.

So have fun with your version of gta nobody is saying you wont but dont bash achievements with no experince at all with them.

For 360 owners the choice is there and they could go for them or not.

Certain games make good use of the system, like Saint's Row or the Orange Box. They make you explore more and add value to the game.white_sox

Mass Effect used its achievements pretty well, too. You actually got increased damage with certain weapons, better healing, better regen, gamer pics, etc.

Plus, its a game within a game. Being a very competitive person by nature, it just drives me nuts not to fully complete a game I enjoy, and the achievements are part of fully completing a game for me. I enjoy it. And sorry, to say someone with a high gamerscore doesnt have a life is just silly. Maybe they are just good at playing the games they play. In some cases, you might be right, but I do have a life. It just so happens that my source of entertainment is playing video games, and I can assure you I am not alone.

i decided from the start that i wouldn't let achievements dictate how i play a game

like for example in GTA, there's an achievement for finishing the story within 30 hours

rushing through just to get this achievement would damage the experience for me .. i want to take my time, do all side missions, explore the city etc

generally, i ignore achievements .. i get achievements by playing normally, but don't go out of my way to get them

I have a 360 and although I can see some people like achivements as they give you an insentive to replay a game, I dont like it. if i like a game I will replay it.

its just a way for nerds to go, "look at me I have more gamerpoint than you, that makes me teh masterrrrr!"

I know what you mean, I used to feel the same way a bit. But I've been playing on the PS3 for so long, I kinda miss achievements.

It's pretty neat to see that "Acheivment Unlocked" bloop that comes up when you've done something. It's just a cool feeling, like, "Oh wow, I did that". It's just pretty cool. I wouldnt consider them a reason to pick a multiplatform game on the 360 over the PS3... but they are pretty cool. It also adds to the "social" gaming experince. No one really cares about anybody else's gamerscore, but whatever.

Besides, it's the history of games you've played. At the end of this gen you can look back at some of the achievements you've made on Kameo and think, "Oh yeah, I remember doing that". It's just cool you can carry those old games with you through your profile.

What cracks me up is the videos shown that tell you cheap ways to get acheivments. I mean seriously wouldn't you feel more accomplished if you got the GTA One Man Army acheivment by playing the game as opposed to getting the 6 star wanted level and keeping it 5 minutes by hiding?

On paper, they seem dumb. But they are quite fun in practice.

To me, they and the GamerScore is kinda like the high score in old games. They have no purpose besides showing people what you can do, but that is what gives them their value.

Ignoring that achievement for my first run through the game, but on my second run... ;)

I don't care for acheivments too much. It's a cheap way to get more replay value out of a game that you wouldn't otherwise. You get nothing from your gamerscore increasing, and in some cases I think going out of your way to get an acheivment can take away from the game itself.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be there, they are nice to have but I don't think they are that important.
