Question:
[QUOTE="xTHExJUICEx"]The reason I believe they're pointless is due to the fact there will always be someone ahead of you when it comes to these achievement points. What will a new 360 owner next week get out of from achievements?Jacboy71

Answer:

Havent games been doing this since the SNES days? I still dont see how having a unified score system adds anything to a game. You cant even buy cool stuff with them, do you at least get codes or things of that nature unlocked after an achievement is completed?

Kinda like in Uncharted when you get a hundred 100 headshots you unlock a video? OMG THEY TURNED NOTHING INTO SOMETHING! Hate Home trophies with a passion? More like just ignore them.

Yes, but the unlock a vid thing is in the game itself. 360 games still have things like that plus gamerscore. Its just a nice way of adding replay value to a game. Its good if you have lots of friends on xbox live. Its pretty silly not to like them because they dont take away from the game at all and if you dont like them you are just hating because you dont like the 360.

It boosts your gamerscore then what? you go from being ranked 3,245,456 to 3,134,467?

Its funny how you are bashing achievements blindly dont knock it till you rock it kid most games do have unlockables whne you unlock an achievement and some make you look somewhere and explore the game the way you wouldnt have for example GTA4 im tring to fly under every bridge in the game with a helicopter sounds pointless at first then when you actually try it its hella hard and requires skill.

So please stop posting foolish opinions and do some research hell even try em out I promise youll like it ;)

Why do people keep assuming achievements are new to the gaming world? and really what research is there to do? you complete a task, then get points added to your gamerscore for it. Its really not that hard to follow.

Hey while you enjoy flying under bridges and then become yet another needle in a hay stack in the Live community, Ill continue to enjoy the story and later play online if its worth it.

Welp you cant convince them all of course achievements have been out since the begining of gaming from sonic to metroid.

A needle in the live community? Dude wth are you talking about seriously mad cow disease is running rampant I was talking about my own personal experience every gamer on any console has their own personal experience hell achievements add more to it you can take it or leave it the 360 brings achievements in a new form which has yet to be done and will be quick to be imitated.

So have fun with your version of gta nobody is saying you wont but dont bash achievements with no experince at all with them.

For 360 owners the choice is there and they could go for them or not.

Achievments add DEPTH to the game. You are challenged with things to do which yuo normally probably wouldn't do. Then you feel good about getting an achievment even if in the smallest tiniest itty bitty way, but that is enough to make you feel like going on to the next. Say you beat a game, but you LOVED it. well, with achievemnts you now have a reason to go back to that game, and still get stuff for screwing around. Take GTA4... roll your vehicle 5 times. It's not easy, but when you do it you reallize you just spent an hour trying to get this, that's an extra hour of gameplay that normally wouldn't have been there.

Studies have been made that show that as little as achievments add to a game, they still make a gamer go back to play that little bit extra, and feel like they've done something good at the same time, even if the game is complete. When given a choice between games with and games without, ost people choose games with them. (not all, just based on this stufy, most) sorry i don't have a link, but if you don't believe me, look it up in goggle yourself. But anyways, that depth is what makes them neat. The fact tahat you get an increased gamerscore is only there to show that you've done "this many" and you can then compare your achievements for any and all games with any friends on your list. They add FUN

Keeping this relevant to System Wars, achievements are proof that you did something special in a game, or that you played a game at all. If I brag that I finished Halo 3 on Legendary and have all the skulls, but I don't have the achievements, then you'll know I'm lieing. In that respect, achievements help keep people honest.

Yeah, that's a pretty simple way to put it that makes perfect sense also. ;)

It's just something fun and addictive to do. It's like pac-man or tetris or any point scoruing game, except you get the points for playing different games. It's just fun and an easy way to show how much you play games. And if you dont have a 360 how do you know that they arent fun to collect. Theres also some nice creative, fun to do acheivements and they just give you an extra incentive to complete the game and do well. That answer your question ?

I remember back at the beginning of this console generation, there was some Microsoft tard on G4 (channel sucks I caught it by accident I swear) talking about how GamerScore is "meant for the hardcore gamer, and can be ignored by those who are not hardcore".

Guess you all are not hardcore hahahahahaahh. I'm kiddin :|.

They are pretty pointless but I like making numbers bigger, so its all good.

They rock. Give you more fun things to do in the game. Like someone already said, the GTA4 one for really long wheelie. If no Achievement, I wouldn't bother. But now I have another fun goal to try for. And before people say "O just play for fun not for arbitrary goals": games need goals. Otherwise it's aimless and boring.

What makes something special is not just what you have to gain, but what you feel is there to lose.

I also enjoy the whole Achievements gimmick, makes you play the game over and over for them

Achievements and Trophys are useless, but seeing that Achievemnent Unlocked or Trophy Earned just makes me feel all giddy inside. They're useless additions to games, but add replay value to games I guess.

I like trophies/achievements in some ways. It's nice to be able to go through the list and see what you've done in the past and have it somewhat recognized as something to be proud of. On the other hand though I do feel they can cheapen an experience. Rather than saying "oh my god that was so cool" I see alot of people saying "finally got that, took long enough" as if it were a chore. They also somewhat cheapen moments where you felt like you were the only one to ever do that...and then an "achievement unlocked!" thing comes up and it's like "Oh I was expected to do that at some point :\". Also im going to sound like a cow saying this but I prefer the trophy system. My RPG instincts are pleased by the idea of a level system rather than points.

Achievements would be better if there weren't so many that you get almost automatically, like "complete the tutorial - 5 gamerscore".
