As I was playing Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion on my 360, I noticed my console was getting rather hot, and the load times were getting really long as the game went on. I then turned the TV volume down, and it felt like a helicopter was taking off on my desk, but it wasn't a helicopter, it was the 360's fan. I then went to a friend's house who owns a PS3, and played some oblivion over there on the PS3, and it was incredibly quiet despite being on for 8 hours, better draw distance, graphically enhanced, and better yet....short load times. This makes a world of difference for me. Now what I'm worried about is that the 360 is being pushed to its limit by a game like oblivion, what does that say for its future? I'm worried that it won't get any better. Maybe the PS3 was the better choice after all? What do you think?. I'm not trying to troll, and please don't flame.

For what Oblivion offers, imho it's not a very efficient piece of software. There are other games that look better, but run without the issues.

No. This gen only started. None of the consoles will reach their limit until a few years.

And this does sound like a troll's thread..

I guess you should sell your 360 and buy a PS3. that's what you want to hear, right? I'll buy your games for $5 a piece too. =)

I think if Oblivion pushed 360 to its limits they wouldn't have bothered making Fallout 3 for it.

I think thats the over-heating problem more than a lack of hardware capability!

plus are u really judging the systems "power" based on the amount of noice it makes.......

Oblivion is just a poorly optimized game, the reason your 360 would be getting hot is because Oblivion's "areas" (ie sections of land that have to be loaded) are pretty small, so the game is constantly loading (if you've ever ridden a horse through a forest in the game you know what I'm talking about), which would account for the heat (which would have been generated by the dvd drive). At least thats my understanding/theory.

Oblivion seems to make my 360's fans go bonkers, they spin real fast and loud whenever I play it...Any other game is fine, Heck, I just finished playing The Darkness andd I heard no fan noise.

I don't even understand how these threads are created. What could possibly transpire to make you somehow logically work out that 360 has reached it's limit? You guess it will be the first piece of technology in the history of the world that is at it's best on the outset? ....and worse, using whatever logic this would be, why wouldn't you conclude that both ps3 and Wii have reached their limits? It makes just as much sense (none).

if 360 can't produce anything better than GeoW, than it might be pushed to its limit already, since it's a easy-to-developgame console

The 360 is about to reach the end of it's life now because the developers are looking to use the huge amount of space on the Blue-Ray to develop games on now. When this catches on with all the developers the 360 will have to come up with a Blue-Ray drive to stay in the game.

The 360 is begining to use just about all of it's power now to deliver the games. This is going to get worse in the near future.

Oblivion does push it to it's limit, not graphically, but in terms of world size. There are so many loading screens it is indeed obvious even to a blind and deaf child that any game like oblivion, where there is a large, detailed expansive world, the xbox360 will struggle.

I don't know if I've heard a more retarded argument for a system being pushed to it's limits. Oblivion was rushed to make launch and still was 4 months late. It wasn't opimized for the system. They had a year to translate and optimize Oblivion for PS3. Secondly the 360 overheating and noisey fan has nothing to do with the software running in it. Or being to advanced for the system. It has more to do with a poor design by Microsoft. NOT SOFTWARE! Also with Sony's history of cheap parts in there consoles, Don't be so sure the PS3 won't have a problem down the road. Just like PS1 had with it's lense fallout and PS2 disc read error.

Wait, let me get this straight TC... You're trying to say that the 360 has reached its hardware limit because of the magnitude of sound coming from the system's fan? Hayashi (developer of Sigma) said they made a few PS3's smoke when making Sigma. Does that mean it has reached it's hardware limit? No. Why is it so ****ing hard to comprehend that consoles' power DO NOT max out a year or two after they are released?

Mass Effect isn't seamless though, it'll most likely be like KOTOR where the game only loads the planet, unlike Oblivion where it has to constantly be loading new areas.

cpu/gpu wise no, but memory wise both consoles are running very low. take a look back at ps2 and you will notice that they didn't get much better after xmas 2001 so that means this year will be close to the peck for x360

exactly, 512mb ram just wont cut it without streaming anymore and a 12x dvd drive is really loud. back in 2005 512mb was pleanty, there were hardly any pc games that needed more than 512mb but now pc games uses over 1gb of ram the 360/ps3 are going to have to start doing some serious streaming. something like burnout or smackdown on ps2 basicly streams the whole time but its not a big deal when the drive is only 4x but with the loud 12xdvd drive in x360 its a noise feast.

wow in the pc version the only load time you notice is when you go into a building, it says loading every so often but doesn't pause.

According to System wars Wii was maxed out when zelda came out at launch, So 360 has been maxed out since GEARS. :P Actually thats not far from the truth as no games on 360 have came close to topping GEARS pitiful, Umm yea correct me if im wrong.

People don't understand. Even if they some how used all of the systems resources..the idea for creating their next installment or project on that platform is to use it more efficiently. Optimization is what its called, if it wasn't for optimization techniques then Crysis wouldn't be able to run on a single core system with limited memory. COD4 looks twice as good as COD2 and is probably less of a strain on the system technically.

Take this in comparison: Midnight Club in 2001.

GT4 in 2005.

Except PCs have to worry about running OS's and other background programs, so the direct comparison of 512mb for the 360 to 1 gig for a PC is flawed. Also because of the design of the 360's development kitsdevelopers most likely aren't taking full advantage of the 512mbram yet (or at least certainlynot at launch), check out the Bioware blog on IGN for more details http://blogs.ign.com/BioWare_Games/2007/05/03/53888/ In a year or two I'd bet developers are going to be wishing the 360 had more RAM but I'm sure 512mb is going to be enough for now.

In the state oblivion is in running on your 360 it is using alot of the 360s power, but this is because the devs haven't taking advantage of the hardware because when the game came out it was shortly after the console was released. And people saying its impossible for the 360 to be pushed to its limits now is BS, any dev could easily develop a game that wouldn't have a chance of running on the 360. Its not really about how much of the 360s power the game is using, its about how good the dev can make a game look without pushing the 360 to its limits, this is why the most important and useful technology is not having game engines capable of doing all these hardout effects and so on, its having the technology to create a good looking game with as little as possible.

probably the drive because it's an open game that does is streaming content you'll see soon.

exactly, 512mb ram just wont cut it without streaming anymore and a 12x dvd drive is really loud. back in 2005 512mb was pleanty, there were hardly any pc games that needed more than 512mb but now pc games uses over 1gb of ram the 360/ps3 are going to have to start doing some serious streaming. something like burnout or smackdown on ps2 basicly streams the whole time but its not a big deal when the drive is only 4x but with the loud 12xdvd drive in x360 its a noise feast.

Except PCs have to worry about running OS's and other background programs, so the direct comparison of 512mb for the 360 to 1 gig for a PC is flawed. Also because of the design of the 360's development kitsdevelopers most likely aren't taking full advantage of the 512mbram yet (or at least certainlynot at launch), check out the Bioware blog on IGN for more details http://blogs.ign.com/BioWare_Games/2007/05/03/53888/ In a year or two I'd bet developers are going to be wishing the 360 had more RAM but I'm sure 512mb is going to be enough for now.

try taking the disk out whie the game is running and see what happens. even with windows and many other programs open I still have 3 x what x360 has total ram free. when I was talking about 512mb I meant what the game uses, excluding windows. Again I sad that 512mb was pleanty in 2005, but now its not much for games only. if it wasn't for epic the 360 would only have 256mb ram  m$ know how to make their os use lots of ram but no how to put lots into its game system

I think thats the over-heating problem more than a lack of hardware capability!

plus are u really judging the systems "power" based on the amount of noice it makes.......

[/QUOTE

Clearly he's not basing it solely on fan noise. Youyourself just mentioned the fact that he was talking about over heating. lol

According to System wars Wii was maxed out when zelda came out at launch, So 360 has been maxed out since GEARS. :P Actually thats not far from the truth as no games on 360 have came close to topping GEARS pitiful, Umm yea correct me if im wrong.

MARIOSDAD_basic

1.The WII is not much more powerful than the Gamecube

2.LOZ was for both WII and GameCube

3.Gears is no where near the 360 limit, nor GPU or CPU wise

Considering Crysis can run with duo core at 2.66 ghz and has very good AI im sure Xbox 360 Tripple Core running at 3.2Ghz EACH will not be maxed out by Gear.
