They dont sell nearly as well many other RPG games.

http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&console=X360®ion=All&developer=&publisher=&genre=RPG&keyword=&boxart=Both&results=50&order=Hits

If you guys are so excited about getting RPGs, why arent the games selling well? You guys might say they arent as famous as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but Kingdom Hearts, a new RPG game, sold over 1 million copies. Why cant Lost Oddessy, Blue Dragon, or Eternal Sonata? Tales of Vesperia, and Infinite Undiscovery might not even sell. Why dont you guys buy RPG games? If RPG games dont sell, wouldnt that mean RPG developers wont release games for the 360? I mean not 1 JRPG game sold over 1 million, but soo many shooters have.

The only reason I can think of is the plethora of kids that own a 360, all they care about is Halo.

oh and I know its VGchartz, but they do update after the NPD, Media Create, and PAL region sales numbers.

2.5 million is bad? Oblivion, and Marvel also sold very well. And their is only 4 other RPGs on that list. 3/7 sold well that isn't bad. Also notice its the American RPGs that are selling well, and the JRPGs arent. probably because X360 isn't as popular in Japan. And Tales of vesperia just came out.

Anyways at least we have some RPGs.

You should look at all consoles and you'd see RPGs sell badly unless they fit in one of these categories:

Published by Square, Enix or Square-Enix

Contains the word "Pokemon" in the title

Why didn't Lost Odyssey sell as well as a Square-Enix game containing some of the most recognizable characters in both video games and the general history of characters in fiction?" That question answers itself. Kingdom Hearts is a bad example of a "new" rpg that has to build its fanbase up from zero.

It'd be pretty pointless. There aren't even enough PS3 rpgs to flesh out a post.

Kingdom Hearts sold over a million... By combining one of the biggest franchises in gaming, Final Fantasy, with dozens of world famous Disney characters, on a platform that had over 120 million sold!

360 has RPGs selling in the 500,000 - 750,000 range, which is fine.

Kingdom Hearts was made by Square, with Disney and Final Fantasy characters, it isn't really a new IP.

Here is the PS2 RPGs. Looking at JRPGs Monster Hunter is the top JRPG not made by Square/enix or Square-Enix. Lost Odyssey sold more copies than that. The Square name has alot of pull.

Can you pull up the list of the RPG's on the PS3 and their sales please? LMAO!!

Most of the RPG on that list are games that aren't out yet or just got released. The PS3 didn't have any huge sales for any of their RPG's.

Folklore sales 190K LMAO!!

Untold Legend 120K

Enchant Arms 150K

Valkyrie Chronicles 150K

Even Oblivion only sold 710K. It couldn't even break 1 million copies on the PS3.

You should asking Cows why aren't they buying RPG's on the PS3. For one, most of them suck.

Any gamer worth his/her salt could care less how many copies a game sells, just so long as they enjoy the game. And there are plenty of games in every genre, and on all systems that do not sell very well or score very high that are still enjoyed by plenty of gamers worldwide.

becuase I personally don't care about boring slow paced bad jrpg games when I could have more fun and excitement by poking myself with a fork.

The fact of the matter is, jrpgs are yesteryears games. They are boring, and niche. Most people want excitement and fun in their game, not having to monotonously trod through dungeon after dungeon or quest after quest.

The market itself has generally moved on to more fun, exciting games, like fps, action, and western rpgs. Games that you know, are acually fun to play.

JRPGs just don't appeal to the mass market, playing through the game with almost the same boring mechanics that I have dozens of times before just isn't fun. I really don't see how people enjoy them.

you should of stated that lems are getting all these rpgs and their flopping. im not talking about the sw type flopping i mean flopping in the real world. a 6.5 isn't worth buying for $60. we all know jrpgs don't sell over a million. also i think we'll stop seeing lems say the 360 is the rpg king. it may have the most so far but if the games are getting below 7 their not worth hyping and that not king.

I was going to go off and talk about FPS but I decided that I'm not going to change someone's mind on a forum. JRPGs have changed over the years and it's hard to see changes sometimes because not every formula works with every JRPG. There are many JRPG gameplay styles that most people lock in on "teh turn based combat" that they don't see how other elements advanced the genre.

most 360 rpgs are average and the ps3 doesn't really even have any in the u.s but 2.

Also 360 has sold more systems than the ps3 thats why it sells more software look at the wii for example so lems please stop with this bs.

Using an RPG that had Final Fantasy and Disney characters as an example of a game that built up from scratch isn't a very smart example. :|

But TC is right in a few ways. First, the Japanese really don't care about good JRPGs if they're on the 360. Just look at what happened to poor Eternal Sonata, a game that totally deserved to sell millions. Secondly, most American 360 users don't care about good JRPGs. If you asked an average/casual 360 gamer what they'd perfer between GTAIV and Halo 3 or Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia, you'll get an answer of GTAIV/Halo 3 every single time. Still, I applaud MS for making a clear and dedicated effort to widen their variety of games.

CWEBB04z

The reason is partially because the 360 is most popular in the US, and shooters are 50x more popular than JRPGs here. Another reason is as you stated: This isn't Final Fantasy, or Dragon Quest; the games don't have the same level of recognition. But to say that all the "kids" who own the 360 only care about Halo is just a ridiculous generalization. I own all 3 Halos, and I don't care about any of them as much as I care about my favorite RPGs. FFVI is one of my two favorite games all time, and everytime a JRPG is added to the 360 library, I'm happy. The only issue? So far they don't seem to be particularly polished. I have Blue Dragon and I couldn't really get into it, and it sounds like IU is a mixed bag. I haven't had the money recently (or have had higher priority games), but I'm definitely picking up Lost Odyssey when I can, and if something like Persona came to the 360, I'd buy that in a second. The demand is here (on the 360), but "decent" JRPGs aren't necessarily something that are going to sell like wildfire on any system.

Now I think the J in JRPG stands for Japanese.

You may have noticed the xbox 360 hasn't sold all that well in Japan, and yet it suprises you these games don't sell a million copies?

A lot of those sold great, perhaps not as good as handheld RPG sales have been or last gen sales, but incredible compared to other home console sales in the same genre.

The bulk of 360 game sales come from USA, and I think it's obvious that jRPGs aren't that big over there, yet anyway, honestly I'm surprised they're selling even that much. wRPG on the other hand seem to sell just fine.

I think it somewhat softens the blow of those scores you refer to, when you take into consideration that at least it has the games. And not all are "flopping."

Not certain but me thinks L.O. must be a multi-million seller by now based on the reception it got in February - I mean over 300,000 in it's first month and since then the word seems to have got out that L.O. is one of the finest JRPG to ever hit the street ! :)

"Lost Odyssey reportedly sold 40,000 copies in Japan on its first day at retail, around 50% of the shipment. As of February 17, 2008, the game has sold 104,417 copies in Japan according to Famitsu numbers.[13]The game has done much better in the West; according to NPD numbers Lost Odyssey debuted at #7, selling 203,000 in its debut month of February in North America.[14]"

My guess is that B.D. has sold over a million as well but again not certain.

"Pre-orders of Blue Dragonbundled with a limited edition Xbox 360 Core system were sold out in Japan well before the December 7, 2006 release date.[31]Microsoft and Mistwalker initially hoped to sell over 200,000 copies,[32]which would break their record for sales of an Xbox 360 game in Japan. The game did manage the goal, with almost exactly 200,000 copies sold as of December 27, 2007.[33]Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was pleased the game sold as well as it did.[34]"

wow i really never noticed this...

i mean sure oblivion and marvel sold AMAZINGLY, however, there multiplat.

Its funny i see many posts saying "ZOMG X360 is RPG SYSTEM" but sales dont show that. Yuor right. Sure x360 has many rpgs, but who cares, its not selling, your feeding a point that is meaningless.

w/e tho..

iesexywarden

Fact: The 360 has the most RPGs out of the 3 consoles. How is it not the RPG system? What does sales have to do with anything?

If you are an RPG fan the 360 has the most titles to choose from. Your logic is a bit screwed up.

[QUOTE="Senor_Kami"][QUOTE="xsubtownerx"]

[QUOTE="Utensilman"]cause JRPGs suck and haven't been changed since 1997xsubtownerx

You're joking, right?

He's 50% accurate. They don't suck but they are pretty much unchanged since 1997.

They have changed dramatically since then.

Updated graphics for updated hardware shouldn't be considered a dramatic change.
