A number of gamers are reporting that the Xbox 360 version of the game is causing major freezing issues and the 'Red Ring of Death' for a minority of consoles. A thread which is running over on Xbox.com reveals the full extent of the problem.

Further investigation by another member lead to this:

"As it stands, there's no fix. But we did some research and believe we have the answer as to why this is happening.

Rockstar, in their very finite wisdom designed the game to have no loading times. That's great, except for the fact that GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache.

The solution: Rockstar needs to release a patch that limits the strain on the RAM right out of the gate. Can they even do this? Who knows? They haven't managed to make a game that doesn't freeze in two years. Unless you count the mega epic "Table Tennis"."

Another member has reported other issues with the game as well: "Im having a freezing issue but another issue aswell. When I put the game in my disk stops spinning, makes scratching noises, and then works for 5 mins or freezes right away. Ive replaced the disk 2 times now and each disk has the same problems. But its just GTA not any other disk i have. This happening to anyone else?"

The thread which is now 1,800 posts long and has received 65,000 views is yet to receive any response from Microsoft or Rockstar.

I never had any problems playing, and those RROD are probably not caused because of the game.

no the ps3 problem was during the initial load of the game it sent a signal to the rockstar servers but the server wasn't answering or something like that. anyways it wasn't a problem with the ps3 but a problem with rockstar servers. this however is a hardware limit on the 360 itself. so not exaclt the same problem but still in the end both version are pretty much idetentical.

on a side note this is kinda funny cause of all the lemmings making fun of the seperated ram the ps3 has and saying the 360 is superior due to its unified ram setup...lollercakes

My main point is this, for such a big company like MS it is quite clear that they did not check the quality of the product they put out adequately. The fact that people even have RROD and have to go through the hassle of changing systems is a shame really.

Way to make sure to throw that in.

I never heard of any 360 issues until this thread. Doesn't make it false. Just makes me weary of the news.

When it comes down to it, there are issues with BOTH versions. And giving Rockstar a little credit, I'm sure its not easy making a game like GTA4 seemless.

And I will say the reasoning used in the TC's quote makes some sense. Does not make it so, of course.

...RROD isn't dead...just because you have 2 360's that haven't gotten it yet isn't proof of that. i have 2 friends that just got RROD. one just baught a new elite(even after i told him it'll get fixed for free, but he wanted the elite i guess...)and the other is on the fence about whether or not to get a ps3 or get his 360 fixed. plus the net is full of pics of new elites and pros with the RROD. so quit trying to state fiction as fact

Nah. Not really. the 360 has so many damn games, having a system break down and getting a chance to do other things is probably a good thing.

Plus we should feel sorry for MS. Its obvious it put its trust into the wrong testing company. Look at the XBOX it had no hardware problems.

Plus if it wasn't for the freindly RROD code to let us no something was wrong the PS3 would be dead. Maybe.

So we have 1800 people complaining out of over 1,000,000 people who have the game and play it. Seems like a very very small percentage is having a problem with the game.

Well, I am not defending the console, but on those occasions it sounds like people play a lot more, making the flaw in the console cause overheating a lot more. I got the RROD a few times, but by the time I had worked out that it was because the thermal paste on a chip (judging by the E74 error, most likely the graphics chip) had deteriorated, I had played it and caused the thing to fry it's self permanently. It's just about how often you play; 15 mins a day is probably never going to overheat unless they just outright forgot to apply paste at all.

Oh and who said that RROD is dead is a blind fanboy. They have moved all production 360's to 65nm yes but the old ones can get red ring too. and as a side note it will always have RROD because no product is ever "Full-Proof" not even the ps3 or Wii

I've had no issues with my launch 360 and this game, and I know about 20+ people with this game, none of which have had this problem. I'm sure if something like this would have come up awhile ago (like the PS3 issues, not taking any shots at them, just saying). I'll take it abit more seriously when I see a few other sites talking about this.

How is there no fix??? If it's screwing up the cache....here's an idea: how about clearing the cache!?

you just go over your storage device hit Y, X, X, X,LB, RB, X, X, X. Voila cache is cleared......

Lollercakes. By the time DLC comes out nobody is probably even going to care about GTA. It's only been a little over a month and most people hate the game, imagine in a few months when the Gears 2 hype really starts up.

I'm sure that's what it is. So many people dusting off their consoles when a big game is released.

My issue is that the news stories blame the games. Like there's a programmatic problem with the game that causes 360's to fail, when in fact its the age old issue with RROD.

Still doesnt stop the fact that both systems have problems with GTA4, so u better watch out, your 360 might end up dying one day because of this, lol just kidding. Yeah anyways I think this is just a few people on both systems having this problem, and the RROD thing im sure that has nothing to do with GTA4 because fact is its been happening way before GTA4 came out so those claiming there system got RROD from GTA4, no thats not rockstars problem its microsofts.
