If any of you happen to keep up on the xbox.com forums you probably already know about this, but I though I'd post it anyway for potential 360 buyers in the near future. The 360 is receiving a new mother board and cpu currentlycalled:

Xbox 360 Falcon Mother Board and 65-nm CPU

Hopefully this will fix the d00m lights forever!!! :P

Thoughts?

I get Disc read errors all the time with all my games. I coulnd't be beotherd finishing the endruance races in forza 2 becuase I know I will get an errror, every 3rd or 4th time a loading screen apears in dead rising there is a disc read error. and I could go on all day.

I used to get those during RSV and SCDA. I thought it was my 360 overheating or something so I put an external fan on it and the problem went away for me.

I doubt it's a heating problem, I can get these within 5 minuties of playing.

They should have these in consoles already. It's ridiculous that the failure rate hasn't gone down significantly after nearly two years.

I thought a large cause of it was the motherboard expanding when it heated up or something...

the 65 nm chipset is great, but the GPU is still manufactured with the 90 nm process, so i don't know if the "falcon" will take care of all heating issues. apparently MS is planning on switching the GPUs to the 65 nm process in an even later version of the console (e.g. post-"falcon") so if i were a potential buyer, i'd wait till then.

Funkyhamster

Due to a design flaw with the xclamps, poor sauter (which could allow for the GPU to pop out of the motherboard), and an insufficient cooling system.

You wouldn't be saying that if you owned a 360...

Achievements are completely useless, we're aware, but they are to us what Hi-Score's were to gamers in the 80's. It's nice to know you've accomplished something in the game you're playing.

As did I, but it describes these updates as possibly being in the Halo3 360's as shown in the pics.

Than you must have missed the picture posted this week of a Halo 3 edition 360 with the red rings.

This is funny. MS still has to come out with what cases the red rings. They say they are replacing these items to "help" the situation. But they have no idea if its a save-all or not. Its gonna take many sold, long time healthy 360's before any faith is restored.

Well, idk if this is entirely true. The IGN article I linked on page 1 said it was either a newer board or an older one in the 360 they were inspecting. Hope it is true though. Factual information is bound to surface sometime and hopefully MS doesn't try to keep this low for sale reasons (for whatever reasons they might have).

I like the presentation on Vista and that was one of MS main focuses. There will always be people who complain, but thats the world. I will say that the way Vista "buried"a lotof stuff is quiet dis-heartening though.

Cry0Tek

The presentation isn't the problem with Vista though its definitely horrifically bloated and underwhelming/user-unfriendly compared to a lot of things in the Linux world.

The problems with Vista are the spyware/DRM by the truckload and the general screwups in it such as the disappearing network connections (which the guy across the hall from me in the dorm actually had happen to him) and the generally poorly thought out security. If even with the extra password authentication needed to run things privileges can easily be escalated, whats the point?

Of course, the fact that they still haven't come up with a sane solution for fragmentation and still have a seperate "system" user which is perfect for malware to infect is ridiculous as well, but those aren't common criticisms of the OS.

Well I had warned people to probably wait at least another few months to be sure the hardware issues were worked out before they bought one. That was of course in a thread where everyone was saying things are fine now and it should be safe.

So yeah, make darn sure that you've got a Falcon system before you buy one (and even thats not a sure solution to the problems, but it may help).

Personally, I think it's safe to buy a 360 now if it has the falcon in it. Microsoft did a bunch of hardware revisions: cooler CPU which will make it less hot inside the 360, additional heatsink to help distribute the heat better for the GPU, and the other big thing: they no longer are using that x-clamp to secure the heatsink to the GPU which many PC experts believed was causing the RROD - it did not fasten the heatsink to the GPU securely enough. They are now using 4 screws for the heatsink now.

Many people were able to fix their RROD issues by just removing the x-clamp and using a different clamp mechanism to make sure the heatsink was fastened tightly to the board and making nice contact with the GPU.

Thats pretty much what I said, so long as it has the falcon chipset I would consider it relatively safe, but if you don't know it does don't chance it because theres a pattern of repeat failures in systems that fail even once.

It still doesn't solve the issue with disc-scratching but luckily that hasn't been TOO widespread (though I've seen a few examples of it myself).
