I do not make it a habbit of bumping old threads, but I made a very important first-hand discovery that confirms the existance of 3DS units with worn out paint on the D-pad. I just checked a display 3DS unit at Wal-Mart, and the D-pad was definitely painted since the blue paint was chipping off pretty badly around the edges. I took a picture using my ancient cell phone so I apologize for the poor resolution, but as you can see there is gray plastic showing through the edges of the D-pad, especially at the outward corners.

Now, I think we can put to bed these silly allegations of counterfeit and conspiracy. I feel somewhat vindicated having posted this thread initially, however my sympathies go out to the people who may actually become victim of this since you guys were clearly excited for this system and deserve better quality. Obviously a display unit will see a lot of abuse, but since we now know it to be fact that it is possible for the paint to wear off of the D-pad and buttons, it could potentially happen to home users who play their unit a lot so caution is adviseable. If you are gentle with that thing and it should last a long time, but still, it's disappointing that Nintendo went cheap with the manufacturing on it.
