The king is here! The handhelds(3ds and vita) will follow the same path as their predescesors and kick the console counterparts in the behind! JAPAN is king baby!

By the way, gamers need to go with the pc/handhelds combo next gen, it's the way to go!

Let the cosolists fight for last place again...

I may be missing something here, but did consoles ever get kicked in their butt by handhelds?

Uh, yeah? All the f**king time?

It'll have some tough competition from the Vita, and smart phone gaming is catching up. 3DS may not be the success that the DS was.

DS sales vs. PS3 sales? Hell, PSP vs. PS3 sales?

The way i see it, we can only claim that consoles had their butt kicked if these handheld sales were eating into the market share of console sales. if a DS owner bought a DS in place of a ps3 ar 360, then the DS is a competitor. But if this DS owner was never gonna get a ps3 or 360 anyway, then it's an independant market.

I'm not saying it isn't the case, but what do we know for sure? It's like comparing the sales of a phone versus a desktop. Just saying.

All the consoles bombed hard in Japan and some European markets. The DS broke records and took names everywhere, the PSP also did really well especially in Asia.

I would have to say from what I have seen, there are a lot more... creative or imaginative games made on portables. Dev costs are lower, so i think they are more likely to take the risk making games for handhelds. To say handhelds > consoles is like comparing two different things. Why would you limit it to consoles? why wouldn't you say handheld > pc, consoles? - I have a psp, and wouldn't mind a DS as well, but they would never replace my like of consoles. Games like skyrim up to this point havent happened on handhelds, or mass effect and many others. And multiplat games that come to psp are dumbed down versions. not always bad at all, just not nearly as much as the console counterparts. Games made exclusively for handhelds are usually better than console spinoffs, but again they are different. It comes down to the types of games you like to play. If they are more the type found on handelds. then you like handhelds, and vice versa. but hey its SW, so: PSP = 10 games that have scored 9.0 or higher @ gamespot. DS = 16; Xbox 360 = 50!; PS3 = 50. These numbers for Xbox/PS3 do not include the arcade titles available. So Xbox360/PS3 > handhelds. combined.

Nothing Apple can do about it. The iOS devices have their own gaming niche- those who find themselves satisfied by iOS games wouldn't have bought a dedicated gaming handheld to begin with. A person with any extent of interest in video games however will ultimately end up buying either the 3DS or the Vta because of the wealth of content that these two systems will offer. The iOS devices will not kill off dedicated handhelds. These are two separate markets and will co-exist. If anything, I expect to see dedicated gaming handhelds continue with the same steam and momentum that they gained from this last generation. 50 million+ for the Vita and ~100 million from the 3DS does not seem so unlikely now.

I wasn't suggesting Apple would kill anyone off, the 3DS and Vita will be in Apple's shadow with iPhones and tablets gaining more popularity for gaming.

I just want that new Paper Mario game.

timmy00
That's going to be awesome, but I was kinda hoping for a new Mario & Luigi game instead. I think the 3DS will be successful, but only time will tell.

Maybe in the expanded market that the DS captured, yes. But in the core handheld market that existed before the DS, and that is at least a 100 million users strong, the 3DS and the Vita will be as strong as ever.

Its what I plan to do upgrade my pc and go with handhelds I enjoyed playing on my psp more then I do the ps3 which is mainly for netflix and blurays. The 3DS/Vita once they build up there library like they will both be great handhelds. I'll also have my smartphone for the really quick gaming burst here and there. The one console that has caught my eye through is the WiiU because of the large screen on the controller it offers something diffrent from my pc or other console just have to wait and see how it plays out in terms of 3rd party support.

But they don't have to anyway. Where does everyone get the idea that Nintendo has to beat Apple?

I'm not saying they do and I personally don't care how much any product sells as long it interests me. So what does TC mean when he says 3DS will be king, it's definitely not going to be in sales and it's debateable on games.

He means that 3DS sales will beat out sales for the consoles. He is using this point to reinforce the fact that handhelds are here to stay, and are at least on an even footing with the home consoles.
