Poll 3DS successor: yay or nay for the 3D? (66 votes)

Yay 33%
Nay 67%

Before we proceed

Assume that having 3D will not affect the quality of the screen on the 3DS successor in any way- it will be as good (or bad) as it will be regardless of the non/presence of 3D on the system.

Got that? Good.

So- the 3D feature on the 3DS. It's been controversial, and it's rarely ever been used effectively, but with the New 3DS line, Nintendo has finally nailed it- the 3D looks great, and it's very hard for me to go back to not playing with it enabled anymore (full disclosure, I used to play with 3D on even on my older, launch 3DS).

With all the problems of the 3D having been resolved (sweet spot, headaches, blurry images), and with the 3D providing Nintendo a differentiating feature from smartphones and tablets, the question is, should Nintendo keep it on the 3DS successor, or not? Would you want it on there or not? Would you miss it if it was gone, or not?

(also, which 3DS model do you have? I want to see the correlation between owning a New 3DS and wanting the 3D to be retained, if any is there)

They don't need 3D for the next handheld, so I'm okay with them dropping it.

I don't really use the 3D setting all the time, but I do like it when I use it. Personally, I don't care if they have it or not, but I feel they should find something else to differentiate their next handheld instead.

No, please god no.

Also having 3D but it not affecting the quality of the other components is an impossibility. The screen for starters, would automatically be lower res because the games need to run smoothly with the 2 screens at once.

Yay. I like the 3D effect I use on my New 3DS XL and I do nope they continue to use it on there next handheld. Sony wanted to use 3D on there Vita as well but Sony saw that as a wise move. And besides, if anyone doesn't like 3D, they can just turn it off or not use it. It's optional, always is, why drop it when it's optional? It ain't gonna hurt to have it.

I prefer better battery, as 3D has always been a battery hog. Taking it out will save a couple more hours.

3d makes graphics have another level of realism... its too bad that the effect is hard to keep stable.

Ditch the 3D. Was a stupid idea to begin with. Despite your assertions to the contrary there are still people who experience blurriness and headaches with the new models even though the tracking helps things for many. They're also making the central gimmick of their device something that around 10% of customers can't see to begin with, and one that optometrist's have warned can damage children's eyes. Now top it off with your own admission that the feature has been used well in embarrassingly few games and you have one of the dumbest decisions in Nintendo's history.

For Pete's sakes, don't dare them to double down on the stupid.

Yeah, looks like it is iffy at best :/

I would really not mind the 3D, and I would really want them to keep it (especially since it is optional). But I can at the very least see where the dissenters are coming from on this one.

Battery life is actually more important to handhelds, so good enough isn't really enough. What sells handhelds? Games, and battery efficiency. Why is Nintendo been dominant in Handhelds for so long?

Where is this constant regurgitation? This thread is the first time I have said something like this, and it was based on my experiences of having started to use a New 3DS recently.

I can understand disagreeing, but please don't misattribute things to me.

Man you guys can't even appreciate what Nintendo tried to do with 3D back then. it was called 3DS for a reason, without 3D, it would ahve been another DS and people would not buy another DS model. Really guys, 3D without glasses was cool and I never had any problems using 3D feature and like I said, it's optional to turn it on or not, so nothing of value was lost. 3DS is still booming and 3D is hear to stay so face the facts.

I'm lukewarm toward 3D. Generally I find it a non-factor, but there are games I've played where it has been quite novel (although those have been on PC). My limited experience with the New 3DS XL has me feeling it's far less important, notwithstanding the fact that the 3D functions far better on the newer model than on earlier versions. Higher resolution, bigger screen, and console-pad inputs are higher priorities for me.

I really don't mind the 3D from time to time, I mostly don't use it but I'll often for short bits use the 3D until it becomes bothersome then turn it off. I won't miss it, but I won't be glad to see it go either. If they can make it though so it doesn't look so low res, that'd be a big improvement.

There's also other improvements to 3D that need to be had, more on the design side from developers, such as stop giving so much depth contrast between characters and the dialog boxes, that pisses me off and they always do it wrong, I shouldn't have to strain my eyes going back and forward from a character and their dialog.

At first I didn't like the 3D, mainly due to the "sweet spot" the 3DS needed to be held in. Now that I have the N3DS I can say I use the 3D almost all the time. Especially for Zeno blade Chronicles 3D and Major as Mask 3D. Battles in Alpha Sapphire with the 3D on blew my mind the first time I played it. I guess I can say I love the 3D effects.

I'm in favor of keeping the 3D. It would be a shame if all consoles/handhelds just became boring and generic in design with nothing to differentiate themselves from everyday PCs/smartphones. That's not to say I was a big fan of the wiimote or gamepad; I definitely prefer more traditional controller designs. But if it's possible to put in a high resolution 3D screen, with the option to turn it off, why not? 3DS is the only glasses free 3D device I own and will likely always be the only one if its successor doesn't have one.

No, it's a stupid gimmick. I don't want any gimmicks; I just want powerful hardware with a beautiful screen and an ergonomic design. That is what Nintendo needs to focus on, not gimmicks.

I like the 3D. I think it's pretty cool. That being said, if 3D is doing to force them to make a low resolution screen again I would drop the feature.

Don't care eitherway but probably Yay for those who still want it (I can turn it off when I don't want to use 3D).

I'd be fine with roughly X1 graphics at 800 (2) x 480 and 800 x 480 bottom screen .

Nintendo actually should bring the Wii mote back, but update it and keep it as an optional controller.

Shoehorning is never good, we know this. Never played the Super monkey ball games on Wii but I can see how that'd work well, maybe i'll try one.

More than the motion controls though, the IR pointer is a fantastic addition to gaming. Sin and punishment 2 is a great example of using the pointer perfectly but not shoehorning in motion controls.

I actually don't care for it in the fps-aiming sense. Continuously having to point an arm at the screen--no thanks. Even duck hunt let you relax your muscles. It isn't about being lazy either, just not having that factory working mentality.

Shoehorning is never good, we know this.

I understand not liking it in FPS games. It takes quite a while for me to get tired just holding up the tiny Wii mote though, and cutscenes and breaks in multiplayer action do happen.

I love the pointer controls in FPS. I used to not, but after spending time with in the options menu tweaking dead zones and stuff, it's great. In COD Black ops 2 on Wii U I occasionally use the Wii U pro though. I'm a bit bummed Activision dropped support for CoD on the console (and didn't optimize the existing ones and rushed ghosts out but yeah..) because the wii mote is the only reason i'd care about CoD.

Yes, I want it. It's really cool, and I think it works great on the New 3DS. If they could improve on it even more with less flickering and ghosting and an even better pop-out / fall-in effect, it would be awesome.

on the original 3DS, I hated the 3D feature. But after upgrading to the N3DS XL, I always use it
so yay to the 3D feature

They should ditch it. It would be one thing if implementing 3D was free...but it takes money from elsewhere in the handheld's design.

I own all the 3DS models (except for the small new 3ds) and I still dislike the 3D effect. The best two of the bunch are the new 3DS XL and the 2DS imo.
