3DS Takes Over The Handheld Market, Vita Who? (Haters, U Mad?)

Anyway, on to the meat of the matter...

So Monster Hunter Tri G just launched in Japan this week, and Famitsu has reported its sales numbers for its first two days on the market...

Monster Hunter Tri G sold out. 471,000 units were sold in just two days, leading to shortages throughout the country. Capcom undershipped the title, apparently, and the second shipment of the game is not expected to arrive until December 17th... which is when the Vita is supposed to launch in the country too. Ouch.

Even better? The 3DS had its biggest week in the country ever. Bigger even than its launch week (which set records, in case you have forgotten). The 3DS sold 370,000 units during this tracking period. It's finally starting to sell like the true successor to the DS!

The 3DS has beaten every single (Famitsu tracked) week 49 that the DS ever managed to pull off! This is just its first year on the market!

Looks like Nintendo is going out of its way to crush Sony and the Vita. The 3DS had a very bad start, but it has recovered beautifully, and you have to give Iwata props for that.

It will be interesting to see if the 3DS can actually outsell the Vita the week the Vita launches.

Nah, you're fine, and you're certainly not alone :P But honestly, there is slim to none chance that the Vita can ever hope to catch up with the 3DS now, let alone beat it. Nintendo dominates the handheld scene, and with good reason- they 'get' the handheld market like no other company does. There's a reason why they've always emerged on the top of things in this market. Because they know what works and what doesn't, and even when they botch things up, like they did with the 3DS, they are incredibly receptive. Turning an entire system around like that in five weeks is very impressive, and I don't think any other company could have managed this.charizard1605

But then again the idea of some games not running without a memory card -which are expensive- is pretty stupid on their behalf. I have to say though as a gamer who has never been interested in handhled gaming, the PSV is definitely tempting me with the dual sticks and design. As good as 3DS is I really don't care for 3D.

Everyone likes rooting for the underdog :P I think the Vita will have a similar life to the PSP- in other words, it will do very, very well. Sony have their own niche of the handheld market now, and they should be able to hold onto it with the Vita. And I think the fact that handhelds never interested you is precisely the reason the Vita does- it's the perfect emulation of the home console experience. Until now, there has been a clear demarcation between home consoles and handhelds. The Vita looks like the first handheld that gets rid of those divisions. I believe that might be the reason why it appeals to you.charizard1605

Honestly having owned both a couple of DS consoles and PSP consoles over the years I would say that the Vitas success will rest entirely upon wether or not there will be a steady stream of quality games not just weak console ports or yearly sports rehashes which were the bane of the PSP's existence. That being said if nintendo doesn't stop leaving 3DS owners (me) with multiple month droughts where there is no new game worth playing it may be a more even playing field. Oh and nice work on one of the most assenine titles of all time...

They pick way in which they more resistive to mobile phone games then 3DS is, ever wondered why exacly DS games are the once that shows on AppStore, not PSP games? Because they simple and easy to be ported.

Also as long as they diffrent from Nintedo they will sell.... because they diffrent, Wii is selling because it's diffrent, where the rest of the market divided between PS3 and 360 (which are same).... and buy Wii as extra console lol

Sure they might not be 1st, but not being first does not mean fail as most sheeps think, as a reminder PSP is only console that successed that far againts Nintendo in handhelds and it probably (not sure) only series of consoles that going againts Nintendo in 2nd generation. It's more a success then fail

Whoa. MHP3rd's and MHP2ndG's opening sales eclipsed those sales. Poor 3DS. MH will never be as popular on that system as it was on the PSP. Looks like Capcom done mucked up. Instead of announcing MH4 for the 3DS and being satisfied with low sales, they should have announced MHP3rdG for the PSP and Vita and watch as they rake in dough like none other.

But the Japanese market does effect handheld gamers in the West. Japanese developers are the main supporters of handhelds, and if a handheld system doesn't do well in Japan, or if one system sees lower software sales than the other, developers will abandon it.

There is just a lack of games that I want on it right now. I've basically stopped playing my DS because the games are so shallow. Really the only games I even like on handhelds anymore are Pokemon and I still haven't got Black/white after playing the extremely disappointing Diamond/pearl.

Vitas not even out yet worldwide. How could you even say it took over the market when it was the only thing on it.

Note that its lower than the other handheld MH games. It's also the same score as Tri. I'm thinking the game just isn't well liked by the public.

Glad for the 3DS, this will only means more support from devs, however, i'm still pretty confident that Vita will do fine, beating the 3DS? at this point it seems unlikely, but as long as is not marketed as a mini PS3 i think it will be fine.

Anyway, i'm getting a 3DS this Saturday, YAY!!!

Or maybe the game's just not that well liked? Other games, like FFXIII got low scores too. Of course I'd like to see some translations to see if it what they said is justified.
