[QUOTE="xsubtownerx"] Great! But I still fail to see how that makes it a 1st party game.xsubtownerx

"In the video game industry, a first-party developer is a developer that is part of a company that actually manufactures a video game console. First-party developers may either use the name of the company itself, like Nintendo; have a specific division name like Sony's Polyphony Digital; or have formerly been an independent studio before being acquired by the console manufacturer, such as Rare or Naughty Dog."

And? How does Sony own "From Software"? Seeing as how they JUST RELEASED "Ninja Blade" for the 360 as an exclusive THIS YEAR? lulzio.

I didn't say they do, I was just showing others what it ment.

Forget Developer, This is a 1st Party game. It was manufactured by Sony and From Software and it was commishioned to be made by Sony. Sony wasn't going to bring it to the U.S., so ATLUS published it over here to let us play it.

GeoW is made by EPIC, a 3rd party developer, BUT, the game GeoW is a 1st Party game.

No, GeoW is a 2nd party game, I would say Demon's Souls is also.

IN the game industry, there is no such thing as a 2nd party game (as far as jargon goes). There are of course, 2nd Party Developers.

You see, the IP is owned by one company or the other, there is no middle ground when the game is released.

That's why GeoW is a 1st party game, developed by a 2nd Party, that is usually a 3rd Party.

Ratchet is developed by a known 2nd Party, Insomniac, yet the actual product they release is outright owned by SONY, and is a 1st party product.

Whatever the product is that is created, it's owned by one company or another. There are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party devs, but there are only 1st and 3rd party products.

A lot of people sometimes confuse the two.

It's not just the game industry either.

----------

Um, Here is a rough idea :

I could come to you and ask you to draw me a picture, but I will own the picture outright, and you will have no claim. When the transaction is complete, the Picture is mine, there is no middleman.

That is a SolidTy Picture, end of story.

Some might not get your point because 1st / 3rd party games did sound more like exclusive / multiplat. I'm thinking it should've been 1st party DEVELOPER games -vs- 3rd party DEVELOPER games. MGS4 would be a 1st party game just like what the thread said but it's a 3rd party DEVELOPER game.

The word FAN comes from Fanatic. You and Oath are PS3 fans? Forget that, You are a PS3 fan? Since when?

IT's fine if you are, but how can you be if you don't play their games? What are you a fan of? Blu-Ray?

Considering that you don't have a PS3, nor complete the majority of 1st Party PS3 games, whare does the PS3 fan come in. Do you secretly idolize a poster of a PS3?

You are another that voted in this thread, so it makes sense you would defend that post, but you and oath are part of the same DS/Wii/360 group, right?

I am asking, I'm not assuming, but all I get instead of answers are more questions. Seems even more fishy.

Truly, I don't care too much, but I am trying to answer, that's all. I do believe someone can be a PS3 fan and NOT like 1st Parties, but first they at least got to own a PS3 and use a PS3.

SolidTy

Yes I am a PS3 fan and am getting one very soon. The games I'm very interested in are: Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Cross Edge, Rorona Atelier, Valkyria Chronicles, WKC, InFamous, The Last Guardian, Yakuza 3 and future JRPGs for the system. I'm a fan of games and all consoles.

Well, then,...here's my point.

If you haven't played and finished many 1st Party game for PS3, who's to say if you would or would not like them. Heck, when you do buy that PS3, perhaps in a year you may feel different.

I had this very same discussion about a month back by a guy who hated Mario and the Wii. Same conversation. If he never played a Mario game, how would he know if he hates or likes it?

Odds are, he would probably like it, but since he was prejugding Mario as Kiddy, he never tried it. Well, perhaps a lot of nonPS3 owners are prejudging Sony's 1st Party, since they have no experience in completing the game.

I've talked to guys that don't like Mario, and beat SMG, and that I can understand, but I can't understand someone who hates Zelda/Gran Turismo/GTA/Ratchet/GeoW/Halo/Mario/MGS/FF/RE/SF without ever playing it.

Ah well, congrats on your future purchase, and your list looks outstanding. I own and plan on owning every single game you mentioned, so props for taste.

Thanks. I'm just not much of a shooter fan so I doubt I'll be picking up Resistance or Killzone but who knows? Uncharted maybe one day. I know I used to give PS3 and Blu Ray a hard time but things have changed now and I've always been a PlayStation fan.

Now I'm starting to lose interest in the 360 lol. The only game I can think of that I really want for it is Alan Wake.

That's tough, but I'll have to give up 3rd parties. I've had more time and fun with Sony's 1st party offerings so far on PS3. This is an interesting question/ discussion that I think everyone could participate it. PS3, 360, and Wii users. Or is this an attempt at flamebait?

Sony doesn't own them.

How can I explain this...Think EPIC.

Known 3rd Party, can make games, do whatever they want. M$ approached them and had them create GeoW 1&2 for the Xbox 360 Platform. M$ will own GeoW 1&2 when it's all said and done. M$ does NOT own EPIC.

In this case, EPIC, who are usually a 3rd Party, will now be a second Party developer, hired to create these two games for M$.

Whatever is created, M$ has conplete control over, and owns outright. Epic is payed and deals are made.

From Software is a known 3rd Party.

However, both SONY and M$ hired FS to make 1st Party games for them.

Sony even pitched in devs to help make their game.

The end result was that M$ received and owns Ninja Blade developed by FS. Sony received and owns Demon's Souls developed by FS and Sony.

Sony decided that DS wouldn't sell to western audiences, and ATLUS approached Sony to release the game to the Western side, which is what ATLUS does A LOT. Many of ATLUS' games aren't ATLUS made at all.

------------

This happened last gen with RAINBOW STUDIOS, who acted as a 2nd Party for Sony creating ATV OFFROAD FURY, but it was a SONY game. At the very same time, RAINBOW STUDIOS made 3rd party games on PS2 AND Xbox, like SPLASHDOWN.

No, I've played quite a few first party exclusives, I don't like them in any way there's no redeeming features (it's the same for Microsoft and Nintendo though).

I probably just take third party games since the number of third party developers and games outweigh first party by alot.

3rd Party, I bought the PS3 for MGS4, FF and Tekken 6 (Ya I know the last 2 arent exclusives, but they used to be!). The 1st party offerings are nice and merely icing on the cake for me.

3rd party, easy. The majority of my collection consists of 3rd party games and I play and enjoy those games more overall. Sure, I'd miss R&C, Infamous and maybe Uncharted but I wouldn't care if it meant I could still play Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bioshock and others.

As much as MGS4 is my favorite game, Sony lives and dies by it's first party which I personally believe to be the best team of first party devs in the industry.

considering i have an option of getting multplats on 360 i definately choose PS3's 1st party titles.. Sony has a very strong 1st party team which release great titles every year.. However if you just own a PS3 you cant really choose considering the many great multiplats you'd be missing..

Thats a bit hard to choose, how about both? :P

I love the first party offerings from Sony this generation and last gens, they have iconic games like Wild Arms series ( I hope they announce it this tgs ), GT series , GOW series, Team ICO games and amazing games like Uncharted, KZ2, Resistance 1, 2, infamous, WKC.

But I just can't ignore the awesome legendary third party games like MGS, Megaman, FF, GTA, COD, Street Fighter, Tekken, RE, Castlevania and the amazing games like Mafia 2, PES, NFS, Fallout 3, Silent Hill, Dead Space.

I'd get the PS3 for it's first party and 360 for third parties.

Pretty much all my favourite games on the PS3 besides one are first party, so I'd definitely choose them over third party. They just work better with console and really showcase the hardware.

What a terrible thing to have to decide! Either way I'd be leaving a lot of great games on the table. MLB:The Show and LBP have been the most played PS3 games over the last few months at my house, so I guess I'd have to go with first party... especially with GT5 and GoW3 coming soon. I'm just glad I would never find myself in such a pickle.

3rd party, every 1st party PS3 game sucks.

Yandere

You have a PS3?

Hmmmm...

Is it just me or is all the nonPS3 guys answering as if they are PS3 guys?

Also, I realize that it is a matter of Preference, but Sony's 1st Party games don't suck, you may not LIKE THEM, but they don't suck.

Getting AAA reviews all over proves that to be the case.

I have a PS3, next to my soon to get Xbox 360 it's the only current gen system I have.

All my PS3 games.

SolidTy

Do you know for sure if Sony published this game? I know Atlus is the publisher for the western side. So I still don't know how you can call Demon's Souls a 1st party game.

Well, because Sony owns this Game, and had it made...

i never knew that was a sony published game.

3rd party i guess, considering that Demon's Soul, Valkyria Chronicles and MGS4 are my favorite games on PS3 and most anticipated one is FF XIII... But I love Sony 1st party games too, so it would be a tough choice.

1st Party Games for my PS3, hands down. I buy all my 3rd party titles on my XBox 360. I only buy exclusives for my PS3 and Wii.

Good question and tough. I mainly have a PS3 for two series, GoW and MGS. They fall into both categories and I can't see myself turning one down. But I guess 3d party due to the volume of games.

which one is more important to you.. having only 1st party games with no 3rd party games at all (not even playing them on PC / other platforms /etc..), or the other way around?

Mystery_Writer

I would've gotten an Xbox or a gaming PC if I liked third-party games more, considering that costs are driving most third-parties to develop multiplatform instead of single.

xsubtownerx

So according to this logic, all exclusive games are 1st party? .. .. .. .. .. Just. No.

I've dedicated about over 1000 words to this topic, and I just gave you a picture with SONY on the cover, did you not look at the pic good enough?

What is "This Logic"?

No, all exclusive games are NOT 1st Party, HOWEVER, Sony games are 1st party.Sony owns DS, that's it.I've explained it better than that, but you seem to deliberately avoid this issue. How many thoughts, links, pictures do YOU need? Meanwhile, you've provided nothing but your words, which is fine, but c'mon, where is the compromise, where is the middle ground?

GeoW is a 1st Party game, despite EPIC being a free 3rd Party. It's M$ property (Well, GeoW and GeoW2 is, after that ownership transfers to EPIC).

Bulletwitch is a 3rd Party game, but it is exclusive to the 360.

Here's another EXAMPLE. It's really hopefully something you can understand.

M$ owns an IP called PHANTOM DUST. It's all M$'s. Fun game, especially online. Now, M$ did not feel the Japanese sty.le of the game would sell well in the WEST. So, M$ opted to NOT BOTHER PUBLISHING their very own game, PDust, because it didn't seem it would sell well.

Although PDUST was a M$ property, M$ licensed PDUST for release in the U.S. by a 3rd party,Majesco, and let them take the risk in the west. Sony has allowed ATLUS to do the same thing. In fact, MANY GAMES FROM ATLUS are not ATLUS Properties at all! :o

Did you ever play a PS2 game called SKYGUNNER? Like Demons Souls, that was a SONY OWNED game, but again, SONY had no faith in the game...so they allowed good ol' ATLUS to Publish it in the States.
Skygunner is STILL a SONY 1st Party Game.

Demons Souls is a SONY Game, made by SONY and From Software. Sony hired FS to make a game for SONY, and SONY owns the IP.SONY may or may not use FS to make a sequel, that's up to SONY. Just like Dark Cloud. It's a SONY PROPERTY, But, it was made by Level 5.

If you had a PS3, you could IMPORT Demon's SOULS right now, and see it's a SONY game.

Look at the bottom right hand corner of the box...

i never knew that was a sony published game.

I thought everyone in SW knew that demos Souls was 1st Party Sony,

I had no idea that they didn't know about Publishing deals.

I will never assume otherwise again, so far I found out at least 5 people in this thread alone didn't know that.

I don't blame anyone, I just shouldn't have assumed people knew how this all worked. :)

At least you know, and the question is, will Sony have another made or make themsleves or will it die off like SONY's Legend of Dragoon/Rogue Galaxy?

I still wouldn't call it first party, as there's a difference between the company publishing it for ONE location and being first party.

But DS is 1st Party. Someone has to own the IP. You want to talk about Tenchu now?

The PUBLISHER isn't necessarily the owner of the IP. SONY published FFVII in the West, but that has been and will remain a Square game. Sometimes there are deals with rights, and royalties, etc.

That's confusing the issue, I'm talking about Demons Souls.

If you want, we can discuss who owns TENCHU. That's fine.

Demons Souls would not exist, if Sony didn't have it made. Thanks Sony.

If I only had a PS3 and could only play either Sony's 1st party or develoeprs 3rd Party games on the PS3 which would I chose then?

That's easy, 3rd Party Games. Sony no longer makes sports games and I love NBA 2K, NBA Live, Madden, NHL, MLB 2K, etc. Plus Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Varkyria Chronicles (SEGA), MGS4 (Konami), FF XIII (SE), Call of Duty series, Assassin's Creed 2 (UbiSoft) Dragon Age (Bioware), Bioshock 2 (2K Boston), etc... These are all 3rd party games that I'd want to play. Sony's 1st party games don't stack up to all this gaming goodness.

Maybe you don't have a PS3, so you don't know this, but Sony does make Sports Games Zander.

Namely, the AAA-AA Franchise, MLB:The Show. That's a fantastic series, although, it's the only Great Sports game that they make.

Still, you said they don't make Sports games, and they do, but they don't concentrate on those anymore like they did PSOne era and 989.

[QUOTE="xsubtownerx"] Great! But I still fail to see how that makes it a 1st party game.SolidTy

Atlus did that last gen with a Nintendo game. It was developed by a Nintendo owned studio in Japan and Published by Nintendo in Japan. But they didn't think it would do well in North America and they were right. The game was Cubivore.

Lol. I forgot about that game, but I used to own it. I have a buddy who wanted it really bad, so I gave it too him like a year later. That's another good example. A lot of times, these deals go sour, and that may happen with Demon Souls, especially since the PS3's are region free, and people are importing it as we speak. It has english and there is no need to wait.
