Ugh, no wonder why so many Japanese gaming bigwigs, for the first time ever, were talking about how gaming in Japan was in such poor shape. Usually it's an endless bragging fest, when they do stuff like that you know something is seriously off.

The biggest, most popular titles in Japan are so often truly mediocre as of late. Monster Hunster is a completely mediocre series.

You know what I find makes tons of sense? Saying that a game focused on multiplayer is single player WoW. That makes sense.

Funny, because I could swear that those "expensive HD consoles" are the consoles with the greatest number of great games, despite having the least sales And the PC, with the most expensive hardware and most technically demanding HD games, beats them all. For the first time EVER, in the history of the industry, the console that is selling by far the most has the least overall number of great games. A huge portion of this new demographic simply doesn't want the type of traditonal game that traditional gamers would consider "great," and as such games aren't being made for those "dinosaurs." The Wii is selling more than the PS2 did, yet it can barely keep up with the number of good games that the GC had. Imagine if the PS2 had sold MORE than it did (more than 120 million) but actually had less good games than either the XBox or the GC had. That is the state of the industry we're in now, we're seeing a shift in the gaming demographic and as such the types of games being made. This trend is far more exaggerated in Japan than it is in NA and Europe. The industry heads realize this, it's causing stagnation. That's why they gave the speaches they did.

The difference is the shooters that are popular here and in Europe are very highly rated, they're not bad games. Halo 3, COD4, Crysis, HL and CS for FPS, and Gears on the third person side.

So many hugely popular games there are genuinely bad games. Monster Hunter is terrible, just terrible. FF I can understand being popular over there, those are good games. That's not the case for everything over there.

Those shooters are very highly rated in Japan as well (Halo 3 got all 10's and 9's in Famitsu, as did Gears, etc.,) just not popular over there.

I have to agree with this sentiment. MS and Sony really had nothing to show for TGS. They won E3, but E3 is no longer relevant.

Japanes's state of gaming has nothing to do with their "horrible taste in games" or "horrible popular franchises".

The problem with Japan is implementing high end technology into their games.

HD high cost development was a pretty hard hit on Japan's gaming industry.

US has alot less problems in this department because of the movie industry, many SFX houses work in the gaming industry and vice versa, the SFX market and state of the art tech is more developed and cheap than in Japan.
