This is a thread that serves as the antithesis of the "5 old school games that aged very well" thread, but you only have to name 5 instead of 10.

Instead of naming games that sucked in the first place, name some games that are/were considered "great" within the context of their era but simply didn't age very well.

Anyway, my choices are:

1. Phantasy Star 2. I still love this game for its atmosphere and its uniqueness, but there's no doubt that it's an extremely clunky, tedious game now. Phantasy Star 4 aged pretty well tho.

2. Syphon Filter. This game was the sh!t back in the day, but my God, the AI is so awful if you play it nowadays. I was actually stunned at how stupid the enemies were.

3. Super Mario 64. This one has aged better than the other two on my list and its still a great game, but its relatively basic, slightly awkward level design seriously leaves something to be desired, especially if you compare it to Galaxy. The relatively clunky controls don't help matters.

4. Twisted Metal 2. I played this game last year and found it to be a hideous mess graphically and the gameplay seemed pretty old and uninspiring as well, which is weird since the game was so fun back in the day.

5. MDK2. I downloaded this and it's not as cool as I remember it. The gunplay leaves alot to be desired and the level design and AI seems kind of blah. I remember the game being more vibrant.

I think Mario 64 aged about as well as any game from the N64/PS1 gen. At least it doesn't have pixelated mess graphics or endless loading times. It is a bit simple and awkward by todays standards but still quite playable. Lots of content too.

Yeah, I agree that it's still very playable. I still enjoy it but I think it definitely show its age.

Most fighting games like tekken 2. I just can't go back because the genre has progressed a lot technically.

Meh, the level design in SM64 is still better than SMG's, imo.

I can understand people not liking the blocky graphics, poor camera and floaty control, but I think it's still a very good platformer.

Doom has brilliant level design as well.

It's sh!t. It's always been sh!t. You just want to be contrarian for the sake of being different. Sunshine was a hugely better platformer than 64, and the Galaxy games are in another... well, galaxy. The only thing good about SM64 is it's nostalgia factor, and being a lot of people's first step into a 3D world (me included). Go ahead, like 64 more... just don't be saying it's "better".

Goldeneye 007: It began to age terribly as soon as Perfect Dark came out, which crushed G007 in every possible way.

Perfect DarK: Still one my my favorites, still think it is the perfect template for an FPS, but it has aged poorly because of single analogue controls.

Deus Ex: Still one of the best games ever. But man that AI was bad.

Have you played the XBLA re-release with dual analogue free aim? It's godlike. :3

Golden Eye Perfect Dark Banjo-Kazooie The Secret of Monkey Island People would have me believe that Sonic Adventure is a good game. If you honestly believe it was then I will add that to that list because regardless of weather or not it actually was good either way it has not aged well.

The only game on that list I have played recently would have to be Super Mario 64 and it is as good as the first time I played it. Yeah the graphics arent on par with current gen but the gameplay is still as solid and fun as I remember it.

Cool story...

Also, lol@Sunshine being better than SM64.

Sure, if you like to clean stuff with a water pump and don't like diversity in the level themes.

Well it's Mario 64. It's rock solid, even today. Later Mario games obviously refined controls, camera and physics, but they had a great place to start from.

Why are people saying Super Mario 64, Mario kart 64, they run great...

Golden Eye 4 player co-op runs like ass and anyone who went back to it sans emulation wouldn't be able to play it.

Perfect dark same deal 4 player co-op with 32 bots unplayable frame rates

Harvest Moon playstation has the worst load times in any game that SHOULDN'T have long load times

Harvest moon 64 runs great looks great is great, but is unplayable once you play a version of harvest moon that lets you scroll through items without goign into your menu over an over...

FF8 it always sucked

Pretty much any 3D shooter before dual analogue caught on (by 3D I mean with vertical aiming, Chex Quest is still awesome :P ). In general a lot of 3D games from the 32/64 bit era haven't aged very well at all. I'd say the ones that have aged well are the exception instead of the other way around.

Perfect dark though....I bought it on xbox live arcade, and the multiplayer is so broken it's scary.

Really fun though.

Yeah, Goldeneye is really bad right now. I tried playing it again on my N64. No man, that was very much a game of its time. It's not nearly as timeless as people make it out to be. Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Halo, all of those older cIassics hold up very well, but Goldeneye is not as sharp as I remember it from years ago.

I think those are two examples of games that aged well. I enjoyed Half Life much more than Half Life 2 and Deus Ex is one of my favorite games of all time.

Pokemon Red/blue aged absolutely horribly, they're just awful compared to the new pokemon games.

Most pre-NES home video games

Most 8-bit RPGs (Wizardry, Ultima, Dragon Quest trilogy, Final Fantasy I & II, etc.)

Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid

Ninja Gaiden trilogy

Most early FPS games (Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, etc.)

Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil

3.Mega Man (NES) darkspineslayer

I'd have to disagree with this choice. The gameplay and graphics hold up perfectly fine, even if it's on the challenging side with the boss rush at the end.

My list:

1) Goldeneye. It was a pioneer in the console FPS genre, but as soon as the 2nd analog stick became standard, Goldeneye became very difficult to play.

2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I played this after playing Twilight Princess. OoT had graphics I couldn't really enjoy, and some of the dungeons (e.g. Water Temple) were just terrible. Combine that with a complete lack of direction at some points in the game, and it was a very forgettable and largely unenjoyable playthrough for me. Also, the fairy sucks.

3) Doom. I loved this game as a kid, but when I recently tried playing it again, I had a very difficult time with the control scheme. I want to be able to look up and down, dammit!

4)Super Smash Bros. While it was a great start, the game feels a little clunky after playing Melee or Brawl. I can't recommend anyone play this when the sequels are such a dramatic improvement.

5) The Legend of Zelda (NES). I thought it'd be fun to see how this series started. I was wrong. Link's Awakening and Link to the Past are awesome; play them instead.

Super Mario 64 completely blew me away back when it first released. Now I recognize it as one of Nintendo's most poorly designed endeavors. It was revolutionary for its time, but that's it. Most 3D games around that time frame were horroble because they were getting used to the new dimension

FF7-9 ( PSone versions)

The 32 bit polygon graphics. Ground breaking back in the 90's , now hurt my eyes now to look at it. The gameplay is still fine though. I prefer older 2D games over the first gen 3D ones.

With Mario sliding off every single thing, bumping off every wall and jump-steering like a truck? Mario 64s' controls are frustrating as all hell, would take Mario Galaxy over that any day (even just for the spin).

This is also true. I still love to play 16bit games, but i can not play a 32bit game more than 5 minutes. 2D >>> early 3D.

You must have no skill whatsoever. 64 and Sunshine require a bit more finesse than galaxy. I consider Galaxy the best game this gen, but I'd be lying if I wasn't a tad let down that the dive-move was removed from the 3d Mario games. I'm surprised people are mentioning it at all. As for Goldeneye. People must remember that we've already adjusted to two sticks. Think of it this way: one day devs stop giving the option to invert the axis of the analog sticks. There would be some adjustment there.
