[QUOTE="Nude_Dude"][QUOTE="Heirren"]Mario64 and Twisted Metal 2 are two games that haven't aged a bit IMO. In ways I think Mario 64 controls even better than galaxy.Heirren
With Mario sliding off every single thing, bumping off every wall and jump-steering like a truck? Mario 64s' controls are frustrating as all hell, would take Mario Galaxy over that any day (even just for the spin).
You must have no skill whatsoever. 64 and Sunshine require a bit more finesse than galaxy. I consider Galaxy the best game this gen, but I'd be lying if I wasn't a tad let down that the dive-move was removed from the 3d Mario games. I'm surprised people are mentioning it at all. As for Goldeneye. People must remember that we've already adjusted to two sticks. Think of it this way: one day devs stop giving the option to invert the axis of the analog sticks. There would be some adjustment there.Never played Sunshine, have finished Sm64 with 120 stars (respectively 150 stars on the DS version), but as I recently came back to play it I noticed how clunky Mario moves, especially when jumping. Just try and get the star "Breath-taking View From Bridge" without the assisting block.
Maybe I got no skill anymore, or SMG has spoiled me in terms of smooth Mario control, it doesn't change the fact that Mario games have come a long way in controls since 64 (again, not counting Sunshine).
On another note, Banjo-Kazooie still stands strong in the control department for me.
I think those are two examples of games that aged well. I enjoyed Half Life much more than Half Life 2 and Deus Ex is one of my favorite games of all time.[QUOTE="4dr1el"]
Half-Life. I seriously tried to play it but I just couldnt... it was boring me to death
Also Deus Ex 1, also tried to play it but couldnt stand to play more then 10 min (and no, it was not because of the graphics)
cain006
Pokemon Red/blue aged absolutely horribly, they're just awful compared to the new pokemon games.
i agree...i played Deus Ex 1 like 5-6 years AFTER it came out and it still managed to become my favorite game of all time
i've played it recently and it still plays great....the shooting is horrible, but who shoots in a deus ex game? How i play a Deus Ex game is stealthy and the stealth still holds up very well
that game was definitely ahead of it's time back in the day

I haven't seen a platformer with better level design than B-K this gen.

See, I feel the opposite as you guys. I was never a big fan of Banjo. There's less one can accomplish with the character controls and the levels are downright boring more often than not--I feel the Safeway about DK64. Also, the Galaxy series has brilliant level design. I am at a loss for words that you think Banjo has better level design than the galaxy games.Goldeneye 007
Perfect Dark
Tekken 1 and 2
Virtua Fighter 1 and 2
Daytona USA
Cruisn USA
Killer Instinct
Mortal Kombat 1 and 2
Tomb Raider 1 and 2
I'm sure there are more I am not thinking of.
Metal gear solid
Spyro series (atleast 1 and 2)- big open worlds with nothing particularly interesting to do, and the "interesting stuff" is very archaic or plain stupid alot of times.
There are alot of N64/ ps1 games that could be mentioned.
I think older 3d platformers in general (even the classics) pale in comparison to more modern ones.
I still think Smash 64 stands up fairly well against melee and brawl. it lacks content, but its still a blast in multiplayer.
I disagree with the ones saying MGS. I recently played the original for the 1st time on my PS2 (had played it a few years ago on the PC) and I still enjoyed it quite imensely
4dr1el
Similar experience with four friends that never played it ever a few months ago. It was great fun.
Thumbs up! :P
The following come to mind:
Goldeneye
Every collectathon platformer (Mario 64, Banjo, DK64, etc)
Metroid (NES)
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2
[QUOTE="nameless12345"]Meh, the level design in SM64 is still better than SMG's, imo. I can understand people not liking the blocky graphics, poor camera and floaty control, but I think it's still a very good platformer.ZevianderIt's sh!t. It's always been sh!t. You just want to be contrarian for the sake of being different. Sunshine was a hugely better platformer than 64, and the Galaxy games are in another... well, galaxy. The only thing good about SM64 is it's nostalgia factor, and being a lot of people's first step into a 3D world (me included). Go ahead, like 64 more... just don't be saying it's "better".
Mario 64 is better, come on big man do something about it, oh thats right you are on a gaming forum where all you can do is type words.

Max Payne 1. I replayed it recently, but it felt like a chore. It feels like there is no gameplay variety at all
Backtracking was part of it. Part of the suspense was going past places you've already been to. For example: dogs break through the window--will anything be there next time.Max Payne 1. I replayed it recently, but it felt like a chore. It feels like there is no gameplay variety at all

[QUOTE="OB-47"][QUOTE="Heirren"] Your point?Heirren

My point is that it added to the world, the identity of the mansion, and the overall atmosphere. Not really. There are a lot of ways of adding to the atmosphere without forcing the player to do the same things over and over again. Going throught the mansion would be more fun if there was a new scenario in terms of gameplay, or some different enemy types or something different for me to play with. Max Payne 1 just feels like all you do is shoot dodge. Now a lot of games have shooting, but they feel a lot more dynamic than MP. Halo has great variation in each encounter with the enemy. Max Payne's gameplay was just tedious after playing it recently

My point is that it added to the world, the identity of the mansion, and the overall atmosphere. What pissed me of Max Payne were those platforming sequences. Very out of place and full of trail and error.

Also, lol@Sunshine being better than SM64.
Sure, if you like to clean stuff with a water pump and don't like diversity in the level themes.

No it hasn't, you just aim and shoot with absolutely no hindering, there's nothing that aged about that. It's a adrenaline pumping experience, especially on the harder settings, and it's not exactly a long game. Now if you're talking about its repetitiveness of its shooting sections, that's a totally different thing.

I say that still counts as gameplay. There is little if any variation in gameplay throughout the game. Nearly all encounters with enemies feel the same. The core mechanics are very solid, but I feel that even then it get's very tedious, and by the end you've probably gone through several similair shootouts
What has aged the terribly
Graphics: All 3D games on Saturn, PS1
Framerate: N64
Controls: Saturn, PS1, N64
Gameplay: Atari 2600
End of story

There's no variety at all in its gameplay, but the varied weapons at my disposal, good controls (m/kb combo), the story (which i think is the best of the three), and the short length (it took me about 9 hours to finish) eased this problem. I have a strong stomach for repetitive gameplay if its challenging though.. and if there's something els that pushes me foward.

mario galaxy isnt a platformerThis is a thread that serves as the antithesis of the "5 old school games that aged very well" thread, but you only have to name 5 instead of 10.
Instead of naming games that sucked in the first place, name some games that are/were considered "great" within the context of their era but simply didn't age very well.
Anyway, my choices are:
1. Phantasy Star 2. I still love this game for its atmosphere and its uniqueness, but there's no doubt that it's an extremely clunky, tedious game now. Phantasy Star 4 aged pretty well tho.
2. Syphon Filter. This game was the sh!t back in the day, but my God, the AI is so awful if you play it nowadays. I was actually stunned at how stupid the enemies were.
3. Super Mario 64. This one has aged better than the other two on my list and its still a great game, but its relatively basic, slightly awkward level design seriously leaves something to be desired, especially if you compare it to Galaxy. The relatively clunky controls don't help matters.
4. Twisted Metal 2. I played this game last year and found it to be a hideous mess graphically and the gameplay seemed pretty old and uninspiring as well, which is weird since the game was so fun back in the day.
5. MDK2. I downloaded this and it's not as cool as I remember it. The gunplay leaves alot to be desired and the level design and AI seems kind of blah. I remember the game being more vibrant.
