Maybe these things apply to you, but they don't apply to me. :P Then again, I don't go around telling everyone that I play videogames. I'm not ashamed of playing games, but it's not a very interesting conversation starter unless the interest is mutual.[QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"]

Not a gamer in the traditional sense. If not for my acute interest in all entertainment and arts, I'd be nonchalant about video games. And again I'm becoming more purist in selecting video games: I don't so much as flinch when some sort of over-ambitious video game comes out, but if they revel and relish in the idea of being a game, like Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Bayonetta, I'll turn a head. Perhaps even buy it :?
It's strange though. I would have thought people in the film industry would be more attuned to the goings on in the video game world. Most of them really don't care.
GTA4's storyline was run-of-the-mill and everybody knows it. It has almost no artistic value.I'm a huge fan of cracked.com but this article was pretty weak. The way they completely simplified GTAIV's storyline to make it sound like a run-of-the-mill video game story was pretty dopey. Almost every review agreed that GTAIV's storyline had a ton of artistic value.
It just seems more than a little off-base IMO to lump an artsy crime drama in with Gears.

Admitting you're a gamer is not going to make you cool. So what? Do you game for status? Lol, when someone asks me what I did on my weekend and it was gaming I say I played video games if that's what I did. Regardless of cool or not if you ask why lie? In the same notion, I don't jump to tell people I game. Why? Because they don't really care lol. Same reason I don't tell people what I listen too. They don't care, its not a conversation unless people really are interested and inquire into what you are doing. Games however are relatively new compared to many other forms of game and entertainment so its easy to see why watching a movie or going bowling doesn't make people uncomfortable but saying they gamed does. Granted, I don't consider myself a gamer because I do it for fun, not title.
dude this was posted earlier and was locked. Why is this still up?

I'm wondering that myself, seeing as I'm the one who posted it...

Yeah, I'm in the same kinda thought process right now. I want to play some GAMES, not wannabe movies... if you know what I mean? I'm not quite sure how to describe them other then that, or as you put it "over-ambitious".I haven't bought almost 90% of the games I would have bought back in the day, now I'm just playing what I have or feel will be good according to my tastes. Hell, I'm even questioning whether or not I should by Starcraft 2 right away or wait it out for a while.

Haha you're not alone. But then again, I could say the same over any medium. Very few big budget films in this day and age have captured any of my attention; I love to read, yet I haven't read much of anything in a while(am starting now though). It's simply a phase and I've been through this many a time concerning any creative medium. I spend more time now doing some creative work of my own... but hell, like I said, a phase... a few months from now I'll probably get back to it again... one always does.
I parade around with a Tshirt featuring Pacman chasing a Ghost with the words "eat me" on it. I don't give a ****. :D Am I hurting anyone no? Am I enjoying myself? Yes. People who judge others because of their hobbies / looks have severe insecurity problems. They can suck my ****s.
I thought number one was the most false; he writes like all PC gamers are pirates and says PC gaming is dying (it may be slowing but for sure isn't dying).
The article was still enjoyable to read though, and it's only common-sense to take everything with a grain of salt as the site's main goal is humor.

I usually find Cracked to have some great articles, but this one seemed to have a lot more misses than hits, despite some good points being made. Then again, I never go on Cracked for the video game articles. They're too damn nostalgic.
Thoughts?

Cool is defined by women and pop culture. Mostly dumb women...like the types that watch reality tv and read gossip mags. If this group of women embraced gaming..Gaming would be looked at as cool. But people have to realize gaming is really hard for the simple minded. Its like the game of chess being cool instead of poker. Most people that critisize the gaming community only do so because games are either too hard for them or they lack interest because its too hard to understand. Common trait HARD.
I question the social skills of the Cracked writers if they are catching flak for playing video games. All it takes is a little swagger and you can make anything look cool. Vandalvideo
Who decides if a Man is COOL or not? Women do. Most men don't care what other men do with their time, but mating women are different. I have a female roommate and when ever she meets guys and find out they are gamers she gives them the cold shoulder...shes an airhead in my book, I know there are others like her. Some chicks are gamers, but there is not enough of them.
I would actually say gamers are some of the most interesting people. What makes someone cool anyway? Should we have no hobbies, spend all our money on clothes and gossip allday cause that's what the media values? I wanna say there'salready ademographic that fits that description... Oh yeah, they'recalled women :P
While the premise for the article is certainly weak (there may be a social stigma against games, but I think it's more of the "you spent how many hours doing what???" variety than something specific to gaming), it does raise some good points about the industry. The story-telling in the vast majority of games does suck (and I wouldn't exactly put the best gaming has to offer up against Dostoevsky or The Godfather, either). The industry-in-general's treatment of sex and women is embarrassing. The community's focus on all-but-irrelevent details is stupid and probably detrimental to the industry (maybe developers would spend more money on a writing staff if they didn't have to worry about people cancelling pre-orders because the game is only 1280x719@59fps).

Yeah, and that's why almost every single review praised the story as something special. One reviewer even described the game as gaming's "Citizen Kane" moment.
And before you try to discredit the reviewers (like people here always do), I'd take thoughtful reviewers over close-minded forum goers (who just want to tear everything down) any day of the week.
(Don't get me wrong. There are many thoughtful people on this forum and some reviewers are not that great, but reviewers tend to put more thought into judgments whereas forum goers just kind of go with knee-jerk sort of reactions).

I think the majority of gamers realize that as they grow up, gaming becomes less and less a part of their life. Some stay on, maybe because they want to be game journalists, game designers, publishers, or even just keep it as a huge hobby (ahem, geeks :P ), but most of us will probably find only an hour a week playing something while the wife hassles us to do errands and chores, and the kids need to go to school, and the boys want to meet up for drinks and pool lol.
People here never seem to have a problem with businesses looking out for themselves at the expense of their customers. Why when a consumer does the same do you insist on holding them to a moral double standard?
Ginosaji
I agree with what your saying but i don't agree with you saying im holding other people to a moral double standard. Other people may agree on this board with what the businesses do to them but i sure as hell don't.
So next time please try not to generalise me!
God, I wish I came up with that service to pay women to play video games with you.nethernovaHonestly, I don't think they're gonna make a profit. I bet the website will close down within a few months.
[QUOTE="-Snooze-"]You know now someone (online at least) who does not own a copy of Fifa...and I never will.i second that, i don't play racing games or sports games at all, except for golf that isI don't think it's cool to be a gamer. Pretty much everyone is anyways ... We can't all be cool.
I don't know anyone who dosen't have atleast a PS3/360 and a copy of Fifa
