http://www.xboxnerds.com/Xbox-360/news/xbox-360-suffering-from-61-failure-rate-/

http://www.360-gamer.com/news.asp?id=964

Microsoft continues to report its standard 4-5% failure rate, but a recent 360-gamers survey claims it's higher...much, much higher. The survey generate 3780 submissions and 2355 comments, most of them from gamers who are upset about their broken 360s. At the time of the results posting, 2,315 complained they've already gone through at least one console, and that translates to a shocking 61% failure rate. The site admits their figures are "probably skewed towards the negative" (which is true), but even so, the findings are very unfortunate.

Participants also complained of "lacking consumer confidence" and shoddy customer service from Microsoft's camp.

"This system is poorly manufactured and should have never passed QC. The only reason it passed QC was because MS wanted to launch first so they could make a profit... at the disregard of the consumer," says Gamertag mantis01, who then finsihes: "Shame on you, MS. I will now switch my gaming loyalties to Sony."

That's a little drastic, but even so, this defective problem has not been erased by Microsoft, despite their best efforts. Or perhaps those efforts aren't their best.

So a survey of annoyed 360 owners found that 61% of them were annoyed enough to skew the poll? Whatever the real number is this isn't proof of anything.

My guess is 30%, of the 3 launch consoles we bought only 1 has ever had a problem.

I had posted somethign about statistics earlier, but have since deleted it, as I had read the wrong numbers.

The 66% (latest poll results) failure rate seems accurate, at least in the sense that the numbers are self-consistent.

If the failure rate for a single console is 66%, one would expect that each consumer who has had a console replaced has a 66% chance of having the second console fail. Same goes for the third one, etc... The numbers out like:

One replacement: 66%

Two:44%

Three:29%

Four:19%

and so forth.

If you take this progression to its limit, you see that the total number of replacement consoles equals 160% of the total consoles originally sold. That means for every console sold in a store, MS is sending out 1.6 replacements.

The strength of this analysis is that it is supported by the polling number. They say that a total of 4200 submissions accounts for some 6900 broken XBOX consoles. Oddly enough, this works out to 1.64 replacements per console sold, assuming a single replacement per broken XBOX. It would hard to replicate this theoretical vs measured value agreemewnt if the numbers were being skewed by Anti-MS fanboys. It still may be skewed by the fact that people irritated by MS may be more likely to respond to the poll, but then the number accordance would not be so great.

I need more details of the survey. Was it widespread enough, or was it in a small area? If done right (like not on a website), a survey that is spread out through the country will represent the whole userbase of the 360.

That 61% could be off by only a few %.

So those who scream its not legit you have to know that surveys that aren't on websites are very accurate.

1 failure or 3 failures, the fact is most people have had or knows someone that had a failure. M$ say 4-5%, it use to be 33%. Everyone know its not 33% anymore. Xbox.com or xbox360forum, I 4got whish one, someone was on there 8th 360. It might not be 61%, but you know its not 4,5, or 33% anymore.

For the record, my brother, myself and 2 other people I know have had to get replacement 360's. I know someone on there launch 360, but for some reason he has 3 still in the box.

Count me in the 60 percentile, but I got mine back in a month and zero problem since. Still enjoy my 360 a lot more than my ps3, which only saw usage during 360s repair time.

I am going to be on xbox 360 number 4 when i get my next one back. it just showed up in texas today (checking ups tracking took 7 days to get there what the f is up with that i am only 900 miles away???) so i do not believe the 4 to 5 percent bs one bit. but i do think 60 percent is a bit much. if i were to take a stab in the dark it would be around 20 percent to 25 percent faliure rate. i do have a few people on my freinds list on there first launch day 360. but i would say about a 1/4 of those on my freinds list like me have been through more than 2 xbox 360's. maybe it is because we use them more, but even if that is the case it should not matter. they should be made to use. it is irrating and there customer service blows.

61% failure rate for the 360, wow, this is unacceptable, that's over half of 360s sold are defective. MS should really do something about this. A 3 year warranty won't do. They should give every 360 owner free HD-DVD add ons.

If this was true, there would have been a total recall. Since nothing of the sort has happened, MS would be facing a class-action lawsuit right about now. Do you REALLY believe this proposed defect rate?

so let see 66% !!! well, its a high rate, two thirds.

that means that every 6 out of ten X360 owners had the problem and bought another x360 (supose just one time). wich means that every 10 x360 owners have actually purchased 16 x360 consoles !!!

I have about 10 friends that we play regularly that have all had broken boxes. 2 of them are on their 4th or 5th boxes. I love the 360 but it does seem like a possible accurate rate. Its for sure higher than 4-5%

Um you can finally add me to that growing list. Just this week my 360 died and I just sent it in. Now i have to miss out on Lost odyssey.

I also debunked the myth about launch consoles not lasting long. I got mine at midnight on november 22 2005. It finally just died this week. If I was at home I could even show the receipt but since im at college and have a snow day today I cant show you.

So all in all im pretty happy that my launch console lasted this long.

But I can easily turn that the other way. I've had multiple failures but I didn't take part in that poll either. I guarantee Im not the only one either. See there? I'm on my 5th 360. 3 rrod's and one disc drive failing.

Is that what I get for giving you a compliment? I was serious. Your post didn't fail into the normal pattern of, protect the PS3, attack someone personally- then rinse and repeat. Seems like in this most recent post, however, post you went straight to insults. And a classic 80's insult at that! Very mature!

Agreed. We could do the same thing for the PS2 and PS1. Both systems had loads of issues throughout their lifespan. How many PS1 had to be replaced. I know I went through a few of them. We all know the XBox 360 isn't perfect, but it failure rate is no where near 61%. I'll agree, it's not as low as 4-5% either.

Wow...ok seriously that's not a very good poll. Heck half of those people who voted and made comments probably only own a PS3.

Not legit.

But also not surprising if the rate actually is higher than the 33% that's often thrown around.

Any way you slice it, that's an unacceptable failure rate.

Polls ARE a good source of research because it's first hand responses from the consumer. They have no reason to lie, whereas Microsoft does. Pulling the BS about their 4-5% fail rate is understandable to make their product look better. Microsoft has never been known to be a source of good products: Winblows, the 360 is a good console in terms of games but not faultiness wise and everything else they release is more or less bit from other people's ideas (AHEM APPLE) but they manage to make it crappier. But I have 2 friends who both had to send their 360's in on the count of the red circle thing within 5 months. PS3's have a failrate of something like 0.3% i heard. And I believe that as they sell their systems in 10 year life product cycles. My friend has had his PS2 since 2001 and it still works perfectly and never had any issues. GO SONY!
