Last week was the Wii's second best since its launch and the DS broke the 600,000 record previously set by the Game Boy Advance by more than 50,000, Nintendo said today.

The company sold 350,000 consoles last week, 50,000 more than the previous week, but still not nearly as many as the launch week of the device when Nintendo sold more than 600,000 units.

Nintendo says they are on track to sell 17.5 million Wiis in the fiscal year ending March 31, up from the 14.5 million execs initially predicted last fall.

The company told the AP that they've pumped up production to about 1.8 million per a month, but still doesn't think that will be enough to meet demand and manufacturers cannot increase production again.

Kotaku

Nintendo DS set a new all-time sales record for Thanksgiving week, eclipsing the previous mark of 600,000 Game Boy® Advance systems sold during the same period in the United States in 2005. Nintendo DS remains on track to be the top-selling video game system of 2007

Nintendo

Nintendo's 350,000 Wii systems represent the highest one-week U.S. sales total outside of its launch week one year ago. Wii has been dubbed the must-have gift of the 2007 holiday season and has been placed at the top of numerous gift lists. Nintendo has repeatedly increased its shipments and its fiscal-year sales forecast for Wii in an attempt to meet soaring demand. Wii reached 5 million sold in the United States faster than any video game system in history, after only 12 months of availability there.

350k in a week? 600k in a week? They're hiding drugs in those systems, aren't they?

Yep, Blck Friday is the biggest shopping day in the US (followed 2nd by the day before Christmas,) and it's even more so for electronics.

I'm sure Sony and Microsoft had a massive boost as well.

Nintendo has sales alright, now they just need games.

If you don't yet own a console and there's a choice between the 360 and Wii, it really isn't much of a choice.

Shouldn't the Japanese be ashamed as Americans buy up JP auto's and electronics but if a sweet gaming console with arguably :) the best games gets snubbed b/c it's maker is a American company not Japanese !

What a shame and should they ( Japan ) not be ostracized as the U.S.A. would no doubt be if the shoe was on the other foot ? :?

Yup, people are picking the Wii. That's why it's outselling the 360.

Plus, this holiday season has seen my wallet go empty. Too many good games are coming out.

The Wii is indeed trouncing the other systems in the retail ring, I'm not trying to argue otherwise. It's the "in" item, even for people who never played games before. It's big business for Nintendo.

I'm just saying that, compared to the other system, the Wii's library is lackluster, that's all.

Like I said, it has the sales, it needs the games.

I'm not saying it doesn't have a few fantastic games either. I love Galaxy and Corrution. It just lacks the number of great games on systems like the 360.

Then I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't find the games on the 360 that great either. Too many darn FPS games and I hate that genre.

Game tastes are subjective. You don't like the games on the Wii. I don't like the games on the 360. That doesn't mean that they both don't have great games.

That's just the thing. There are many good games out right now. Zack and Wiki, Trauma Center: New Blood, RE: UC, Ghost Squad, MoH: Heroes, Fire Emblem, Battalion Wars 2, SMG, etc. Add those that came out earlier in the year and it's a good library.

The 360 has a year advantage and it has helped, but during its first year, the 360's lineup was weaker than the Wii's lineup. That doesn't mean the Wii doesn't have great games especially with this onslaught that is coming right now.

Therefore, it doesn't negate my statement that the Wii does have games, especially if a person without a system right now decides to buy the Wii.

Yep the Wii. And for the price difference you can actually buy the good games out there for it. Those that haven't already got a X360 or PS3 won't play it as much as you anyhow probably and the AAA Ranked titles will do fine. Then they can always play the AAA games that got ranked AA which will clearly fill up the rest of their time.

Untrue.

360 had double the amount of AAA's, and double the amount of AA's in its first year. There's a stickied spreadsheet at the top of the forum you can look at.

then does game support matter as much as you think it does then? Even with less games for it, it still is outpacing the sales of every other console this gen. Hopefully devs realize next gen that the lowest price point will sell more than any of the rest and should start development there instead of the high end, high priced consoles.

I think it's clear it doesn't matter nearly to the extent that most thought it did last generation (where the PS2 had something crazy like triple or quadruple the number of great games than the XBox and GC did combined, and I'm sure most people believed that was the largest contributing factor to its massive sales.) Two years ago I'm sure mostly everyone would've agreed that the console with the best library would be winning big in the sales department today, it's funny that the opposite has been true thus far.

I think it's clear that Wii doesn't need a library (quality wise) to compete and destroy the 360 in the retail market. Now that the Wii's big title 1st party lineup (which was great in its first year, the only rea strength of its library)is coming to an end (after Kart and Brawl next year) it's library for the ''08 year is looking to be worse than it was this year, that hasn't slowed its sales in the least. I think that marketing has had the largest impact (sales wise) this generation. People "want" the Wii, people who never even gave games a second chance in the past. Nintendo has captured the imagination of the previously non-gaming segment of the population this time around. Wii is very "Ipod-ish" in the eyes of the general public I think. It's cool not necessarily because of the games on the system, it's just cool because it's cool. They don't know anything about the perceived quality of the 360's library (nor would they be interested in it either.) More power to them I say if that's what they like.

Nintendo should be giving baskets of gold to their marketing department this generation. They've done a fantastic job.

Just prove that the US is not that important.DaysAirlines

Lemme post exactly what you said when SOny Commented on its Nov 2 to Black Friday sales

Thread titles "PS3 Sales rise 298% Since NOV 2ND!!.. 245% just on Black friday alone!!! WOW"

I have a headline. Sony: Surprised Black Friday Means SalesDaysAirlines

How come MS and Nintendo never send a press release out every two weeks about sales?DaysAirlines

May I ask exactly why your not posting something similar now Nintendo has followed Sony???

The Wii is indeed trouncing the other systems in the retail ring, I'm not trying to argue otherwise. It's the "in" item, even for people who never played games before. It's big business for Nintendo.

I'm just saying that, compared to the other system, the Wii's library is lackluster, that's all.

Like I said, it has the sales, it needs the games.

I'm not saying it doesn't have a few fantastic games either. I love Galaxy and Corrution. It just lacks the number of great games on systems like the 360.

Zhengi

Then I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't find the games on the 360 that great either. Too many darn FPS games and I hate that genre.

Game tastes are subjective. You don't like the games on the Wii. I don't like the games on the 360. That doesn't mean that they both don't have great games.

Yes, they're subjective - that's why we use sitesthat rate games, otherwise people would say things like "I love LAIR so for me LAIR > any other game, ever." Tastes vary obviously.

You're right, it's not fair to compare the 360 to wii gaming library b/c the 360 had a year advantage.

So I'll compare the PS3 to wii. Like he said, since gaming taste is subjective, in the eyes of gaming sites, the wii has vastly inferior library than PS3 as well.

PS3 AAA: 6

Wii AAA: 3

PS3 AA: 29

Wii AA: 14

Total AA+AAA: PS3 is 35 and wii is 17. More than double. This is from gamespot, but all sites are around the same area. Yes you can love wii games, but in reviews and gaming sites, the wii has by far the worst gaming library.

This is obviously flamebait.

You're right, the scores are lower from gaming sites. I don't think this is what makes a better game though. I believe that is just evidence that the gaming sites really don't know what people want anymore, so why bother listening to them. Gaming sites opinions, and the people that follow them, are too pretentious. Definition: Pretentious: 1: characterized by pretension: as a: making usually unjustified or excessive claims (as of value or standing) ("the pretentious fraud who assumes a love of culture that is alien to him" - Richard Watts) b: expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature (pretentious language) (pretentious houses)
