I was playing Castlevania SotN on my 360, and it froze, I'd say, about six times. I thought it might be the game, so I tried playing Oblivion as well, which loaded very slowly and froze. Then I turned off my 360 (manually) again, and got this:

Thank God I got the warranty at Best Buy. My question is, has this happened to any of you recently? If so, were you allowed to keep your old hard-drive when you returned it (I've got oblivion saves, 150+ hours long)?

It happened to me. It's not as often as you think though. Good thing you have your BB warranty, you can easily return it. I have to wait for MS to send me the box unless I find the receipt for Gamestop.

I'm on number 2. I'm about to buy an extended warranty from M$, though. Just in case this one craps out on me, too.

It hasn't happened to me, therefore i can't answer the 2nd part of his question.

I'm assuming there would be no problem with them putting your HDD into a 360 though, it's just replacing a new 360 with your HDD. It should be understandable that someone wants to keep their save games.

Get a warranty like the TC and you should be fine. (It is errorprone but since everyone seems to be putting up with it, the console must be worth the hassle) To answer the TC's question, I believe the answer is no. You have to return your entire console (packaging and all) to Best Buy in order to get a gift card worth $400 that you can apply to whatever purchase you want. (Most likely a brand new X360 off the shelf) Perhaps if the service tech is nice, you could ask them to transfer the data for you.

Yeah, but what happens after the warranty expires? I have to buy an extended warranty? Sooner or later I'm gonna be stuck with a dead 360 it seems like. I still have every Nintendo system and my original PS1. Its alot of money to spend on something that is going to break so easily. Maybe the Elite is built well.

in my area it's about 95% failure rate. mine broke, i sent it in to MS, i kept the hard drive w/me so i didn't have to worry. if you return it to best buy, ask them to switch hard drives. they'll let you.

Ring Of Death occurs in around 5% of all 360s, it hasnt happened to me. Driftwood111

For the math impaired:

10,000,000 x .05 (5%) = 500,000

In other words, 500,000 of the 360's are potentially going to bust out of the 10 or so million that have been sold. Again, for the math impaired: That means that if you buy a 360, you have a 1 out of 20 chance of having a "busted" console in the future.

i think yo uforgot the 7 or 8 or 9 or whatever number it is. just because nothing's happened to you doesn't mean it wont. it happens suddenly out of nowhere. i thought i was good and i made foolish posts like you while my friends' 360's broke around me until it happened to me. the amount of 360's breaking is unacceptable, i'm willing to say all 360s will break at some point. you don't think it will happen, but it will.

Are you seriously implying that 50% or higher of the 360's have busted...

I'm actually speechless...how anyone can possibly think this is a joke. Either you want to believe this and simply tell yourself it out of "comfort" or you actually think it's true.

Seriously, if the rate was over 50% there would have been a recall. Think logically.

And please, don't infer about the dumb survey that was posted on these forums. It was a survey that wasn't random and only polled 2000 people. You honestly think that 2000 people represents around 10 million? I'm sorry, that's delusional.

All of those 10 mill will break eventuly... 10 20, or 50 years they will all break at some point. It's the nature of electronics these days.

Not nessicarly.  Microsoft did put a lifetime warnty on the launch units... and extended it to all 05's... that's not a recall... but it does say something.

Cart based systems have less moving parts... (IE disk drives) so they shouldn't break as fast anyway.

Yes, it says that they are trying to adhere to the people that have had trouble with their consoles. 5% is still above the average (which is 3%). I'm sorry, anyone who thinks that the rate is above 50% is seriously delusional. 7-10% is entirely possible IMO, but 50%? Please, don't be getting all wishful thinking here.

Again, you know what i meant. I never mentioned "lifetime" and specifically meant for the duration of the consoles lifecycle.

i think yo uforgot the 7 or 8 or 9 or whatever number it is. just because nothing's happened to you doesn't mean it wont. it happens suddenly out of nowhere. i thought i was good and i made foolish posts like you while my friends' 360's broke around me until it happened to me. the amount of 360's breaking is unacceptable, i'm willing to say all 360s will break at some point. you don't think it will happen, but it will.

Not nessicarly. Microsoft did put a lifetime warnty on the launch units... and extended it to all 05's... that's not a recall... but it does say something.

Yes, it says that they are trying to adhere to the people that have had trouble with their consoles. 5% is still above the average (which is 3%). I'm sorry, anyone who thinks that the rate is above 50% is seriously delusional.

Ya, it's def not 50%. Somewhere between 3% and 10% prob around 5%.

Well, that's the number that was stated by MS. Whether or not they skewed it is unknown. The average is 3% so it makes no sense why they would skew it in order to make it appear above average. I'd guess more around 7%. That's speculation though so it really doesn't mean much.

It was a voluntary survey of 2000 people. Are you claiming that 2000 people represent the entire 10 million of the userbase? Seriously, think before you post.

I can do the math here as well. Roughly half said that theirs was busted, that's 1000 people. What's 1000 out of 500,000 (which is the number based on the 5% ratio given by MS)? Is that entirely possible from a mathematical standpoint? Yes.

Voluntary survey means that it's not random. You don't think that people with busted 360's would come forth quicker than people who have never had a problem (who wouldn't care either way)? This survey is a joke. Anyone who sees differently is in denial. Anyone with any type of mathematical or statistical education knows this.

Again, 50% is just the delusion of a fanboy at this point. Anyone claiming this should just be laughed at for their stupidity.

2000 people are a representation of the whole.  2000 people doesn't equal 10 million?  Gee, thanks for the hot tip, Quincy.  And as far as skewed results go, you don't think MS does the same thing with their numbers?  Seriously, think before you post.

It's a risk you have to take if you truly enjoy the Xbox360 game library. I will agree with you that once I'm out of warranty (2 years) and the console breaks down, I'm not forking over another $140 for repairs. But I'll play it until that day arrives and then I'll see what my next move is. If reliability is very important to you (and I can see why. No point in having great games if you have to pray they work everytime you boot one up), you may want to consider the PS3 or the Wii. Both are more reliable and you'll just have to see if their game libraries are compatible with your tastes.

All of those 10 mill will break eventuly... 10 20, or 50 years they will all break at some point. It's the nature of electronics these days.

yermomsboxx
And yet, my SNES still works. lol

Your SNES is pretty much just a circuit board with no moving parts. The newer consoles are quite a bit more then that these days.

@ yermomsboxx

Actually I am working in the After Sales Service of a Worldwide known Digi Cam producer
And i'm now 11 years in the electronic industry.
5% defective is a totally normal Ratio nowadays!

PS1?
Well the first PS1 had their issues with their Laser Units.

PS2?
First series had issues with the DC PWB Units (Power Unit).

XBox?
Hmm actually didn't hear any problems about it.

360?
Ring of Death!

Wii?
Nothing bad: Strap issue.

PS3?
Nothing known for now.

Yeah. The main thing I'm worried about is my hard drive. If they don't let me keep it, I don't know what I'll do with my saves.

I got a red ring of death but it was because I had not plugged in the AV cords properly when I moved it. I was worried for a while until I got the manual and found out the number of rings i had was AV component unplugged.

I've had my launch 360 die on me too, and know many friends on this forums who have. (The_Game21x has been one of the latest victims) and well... you're not alone. It's ridiculous that MS makes such shoddy hardware... I think they're trying to replicate the DRE incident..../sarcasm

Question: Has anyone had a 2006 model die on them? I am not talking about refurbished replacements MS sends you. I mean one actually manufactured and sold in 2006.

And also, are those models quiter/not as hot? I'm taking mine back so I might end up with one.
