We already had $99 games Majora's Mask on the N64 was $99 but it was bundled with the RAM expansion pak. Most of the N64 games were $70-$80 that gen.

I think the game prices will stay the same as they are this gen.

Games are over priced as they are. Many games have the same budget as Hollywood Blockbusters (some even less), and yet games cost $60 and movies cost $20-$30 (depending on Blu Ray).

I don't see why games are so expensive, I rarely buy games when they first come out. I just wait a little while for a price drop. Unless it's a game that is going to be great (Assassin's Creed 3, Black Ops 2).

Last year I bought more games at full price because there were so many great titles. Batman, Uncharted 3, LBP 2, and Skyrim (my GOTY of 2011). Next year it looks like day 1 buys for GTA 5, The Last of Us, and God of War Acension.

If the games literally become so big that they cost 99$ (and are worth that content), then so be it. But the VAST majority of games today aren't even worth 60$ because the content and production quality don't match that price point. Call of d00ty case in point, or any short linear game.

But with movies the studio gets paid twice once in theaters and another when it releases on DVD or Blu-ray.

Most profits made in the movie industry is from ticket sales when released in theaters.

You realise that's illogical right? Them blocking used games means the publishers are getting money for EVERY game sold so there would absolutely no reason to raise prices.

I would not buy a sinlge game for that price considering how fast prices drop. For instance, Darksider2 2 came out about a month ago and it $25 on Steam right now

pfff we already pay that much for almost each game. First, we get the game thats a little more than half finished or half sold. Then, if we want the rest we pay for it in DLC. I have a friend who is a dev and he says 90% of the content is merely stripped and sold later. After a game is complete they begin on the next one. He claims it is not very smart to work on DLC after a game releases cause you could be spending time on something that has a greater chance of turning a larger profit. He said the invisible force in gaming is the share holders, as he says "no gaming nerd ever accounts for them." lol

No, that won't happen. They want to have a lot of different prices that suits each gamer. For the "hardcore gamers" (completionist suckers) they want to make sure they have enough things to sell to them to squeze out >$100. However they also want to sell to the casual gamers and they won't pay that much. So no I don't think the base price will become anywhere near that high.

Steam is usually a lot more expensive than PC-retail in my country. Typically the release price is 20% higher than retail. And the prices drops a lot slower on Steam. That said the sales are usually good. But I have seen games on Steam drop 75% and still be more expensive than online retail.

People will buy fewer games. People will move to other platforms. Some publishers may keep their prices low (it's a competetive market).

Youre wondering why a 2 hr movie is cheaper than games that have dozens or even hundreds of hours of content?

That's because it's easier to make game content than movie content where you have to actually build physical sets and do physical special effects. It takes the same amount of development time for a well done movie and a game.

Because it defies basic economics. People won't buy games for $100.

Sony and MS aren't going to block used games. It would be financial suicide. The same rumor was swirling around before the PS3 was released.

I know I'll just go back to PC gaming full time if it happens.

Also there's no way games will go to $100 next gen. No one would buy them.

I know I've learned that unless the game is like Skyrim or Borderlands with tons of content I'll just wait a few weeks for the price to drop before buying the game new. Especially when some games are running 10 hours and less.

no lol. There is just one person who thinks he's all that and deserve a 20 million pay check for few months work... movies take months to film and rest time is done with editing for in a year time. while video games can spend anywhere between 2-3 years of real work

Not to mention movies go through several states of revenue such as initial theatrical release, Blu Ray/DVD, HBO/Showitme/Cinemax contracts, and then standard cable stations.

Yeah I just looked up how much an average movie budget is and came across the movie "Signs" had a budget of $74 million. $23 million of that went straight into Mel Gibson's pocket.

WRONG

Games will remain at the $60 price point.... things will continue on as they are now.... $60 for the core game, $80+ for the Limited Edition.... then +$30-60 for future DLC...

and I'm okay with that, so long as its not abused.... for example: CrAPCOM's on disc dlc.

I sometimes wonder if the publishers are using digital deluxe editions to test the waters for a price increase just like the collector's/deluxe editions they released during the PS2/Xbox/GC era. It doesn't cost them any significant amount to include digital versions of items and artwork, but somehow people buy into them.

Devs already know people don't want to pay more than $60, so they've begun tricking you into spending extra with very minor effort on their part.

First off they'll release "limited" editions of games with cheap little packaged goods, and add an extra $10-$20 onto the price.

Then they'll release DLC with a couple of hours of content, and yet charge $10-$15 for it (1/4 of the game price itself for very little work comparatively).

And finish it off with any skins, or weapons for $1-$2 a piece, and you see people spending $100+ on a single game without realizing it.

I'd be alright with this. I already buy nearly all of my games at bargain bin prices due to the $60 prices being inane, and the ones I do pay $60 for are the kinds of games I'd have no problem paying $100 for, because I'm a diehard like that for certain series. I don't think this would really affect my wallet much tbh, and if the game's are such a step up that the price is warranted, then bring it on.

However, this is very unlikely.

Movies only cost $20-30 because of movie theatres. Once movies are released, movies have usually already made a profit unlike video games.

Only bought a few games at $60 this gen and previous. At that price, I wont buy any, regardless their quality. I have patience, I don't need to get the latest and greatest games.

$60 is to much for me ... I don't think i ever paid that price one time this gen ... I believe if the game is really really good i would go as high as $50 but most times i stay in the $20-$40 dollar range

They gotta figure something out if this is the route gaming is heading where its pricing people outta playing video games (I don't believe its there yet but its coming to that)

That would be the sadest day for many people (mainly speaking about me)

I believe they all have to take 2 steps back before they can take 1 step forward again (speaking with prices)

Maybe Nintendo has the right idea with staying a gen behind the rest in raw power and only upgrading when the market has been set for such gaming devices like HD gaming cuz in 2005-2006 HDTVs and Gaming was forced and costed us gamers way to much money

*also maybe having new ways to play like nintendo does with its controller is the right way going forward

Why a part of the reason they are $59 is because of used sales. If games could not be bought used, then more people would have to buy them, hence they could sale at a lower price.

Movies only cost $20-30 because of movie theatres. Once movies are released, movies have usually already made a profit unlike video games.

Movie budgets are usually hundereds of millions of dollars. Games are not.

Most profits made in the movie industry is from ticket sales when released in theaters.

Not to mention most movies are only 2 hours long at most a 6 hour game is considered short by gamers. Personally though except for some exceptions both are overpriced imo at full retail price which is why I wait till prices drop on stuff before buying it.
