It doesn't matter if Direct x and Opengl come in a supply a standard API that removes the need for making specific code for every single piece of PC hardware. All the low-end GPUs and CPUs still handle PC games differently. Same for medium and high end GPU and CPUs. You can see that from benchmarks.

O please stop the console mentally... theres a reason there are settings/options and requirements. If you can understand that stop trying to justify "your" reasoning which is wrong

All PS3 hardware on the other hand handle PS3 games the EXACT same way.

Ya so?

That's what I'm saying. Optimisation of games goes further in consoles than it does in PC. Not that console games can be optimised to beat PC games maxed out.

No it does not it all depends on what the dev's do. and why spend more time coding on 4+ year old tech? Pc gaming is progressive console gaming is static.

Let me just give one quick example:

Witcher 2 devs are porting the game to Xbox 360.

They have said they may be able to get the game running at medium settings on it at best and low settings at worst.

Yet, 360 hardware is below the minimum system requirements of the game on PC.

That's what I'm talking about.

Optimisation goes further on consoles.

That example is wrong The Witcher 2 is not going run on all medium settimgs its running most textures below Pc's low settings The witcher 2 all on medium setting uses more then 400mb of video memory at 720 and 1gb of system memory which means they will have to make alot more loading points and turn down the detail and resolutions to allow the game to work on 256mb of video memory and system memory. For games that push the consoles its not optimization its called compermising and toning down the graphics to make it work. You can downgrade anything to make it work but its not the same product in the end.

You can take Crysis 1 redone on consoles everything was doengraded to work you can also take Metro 2033 on console Pc's lowest texture setting is 2mpix while console version is only 1mpix. There's a difference between optiminzation and downgrading.

Quote from Witcher 2 devs:

"Graphically speaking we are finding clever ways to optimize the game that are providing excellent results. We feel we can deliver a game on Xbox 360 that is comparable to at least the default medium settings on PC (the minimum level of quality of medium pc and often much higher). It will be a process of give and take in regards to post processing features. But given the fact that the 360 is a closed system we will be able to max out the processing power available and provide a very compelling experience when compared not only to the Witcher 2 on PC but all of the latest games on 360."

I think I'll take their word over yours.

Either you don't understand what I'm saying or you don't know what you are talking about because optimisation going further in consoles than PC is a goddamn fact.

Benefits of a closed platform. End of story.

I gotta agree with the second comment, the making-things-dark-to-appear-richer trend is really annoying. Saturated colors look really dense when they're dark and give off a false impression of some sort of attempt at realism. Sorry but lighting in the real world does not work that way and even if it appears richer, it's more difficulty to see through and is annoying. It's good for illustrations, not so good for gaming.

They are selling you something they are not going to come right out and say you getting a inferior version.... its called promoting no matter how you spin it. Optiminzation can not overcome the limits in the hardware and resources.

The key words below show you marketing terms and that fact that the console cannot handle full medium settings.

"We feel we can deliver a game on Xbox 360 that is comparable to at least the default medium settings on PC

"CD Projekt RED aims to make the Xbox 360 version of fantasy role-playing game The Witcher 2 look almost as good as the PC version when played on medium specs. At the very least, it'll look better than the PC version does on minimum settings, the developer promised. "The Xbox version is going to look better than the minimum settings on the PC," senior producer Tomasz Gop told Eurogamer."

The Witcher 2 can run on medium settings with a single 8800GT at 1680x1050 the console version will be running a slew of settings mostly low settings with some medium settings at 720 they are toning down the game's quality to allow it work on the 360.

Dude, the devs have to sell their damn game...
They ain't gonna say it's gonna be crap...
You can't honestly be taking the devs for their words.
It's just like when Crytek said that the Crysis 1 port was much better looking game than the original PC version

[QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"]Nope. Next-gen consoles won't be powerful enough to muster those visuals properly. AND I doubt Bethesda will release a game looking that.Wasdie

Your reasoning behind that is?

Because that costs money. And if you want to spend money, YOU NEED MONEY TO SPEND. Google the economic issues we're currently facing. Then you Might understand

Games are going to be pitch black and devoid of light next gen?

That looked hideous.

I seriously hope not, that looks godawful. The contrast is retardedly bad. The water is insanely unrealistic for that environment. The lighting is overblown. It lacks any sort of global illumination. The tree textures are crap. Why is the entire environment black???? No no no, I expect the next elder scrolls to look much better.

That contrast :|

I'm not even sure how one could see most of the details seeing as how mostly everything was covered in pure black.

That's the ugly EQM mod. Here's a better video. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43vcPHn4Po4

Yea i like your video much better, I would love the next elder scroll game to look like this.

They should just ditch whatever proprietary engine they use for their games and start licensing Dunia from Ubisoft, they'd have much better foliage and foliage that responds to weather and other physical effects like explosions, players moving through it, etc, and it's built for open world. Do that, see what the Dunia Engine is like on a new console, Elder Scrolls will look beautiful. Just watch a Dunia Engine video from 2008 and that's what a future Elder Scrolls games SHOULD look like.
