The Getaway was just a trainwreck of a game. To think I was insanely hyped for it and picked it up on release day, only later that night to jump off the nearest hill and sprain my ankle. The fall didn't kill me and my stupidity.
didn't Halo CE come out before the Getaway?AdmiralDanYes it did, but Halo didn't have all of the 'realistic'-like stuff that Getaway had which is in GTA4. Can't believe i'm the only one who see's it, maybe i'm one of the few who actually played it.

Desperate for ownage? What are you talking about? What do I have to own? Thanks for the sarcasm but that's not what I meant. You guys are missing the point. GTA4 had 'realistic' movements and stuff, which Getaway had. Getaway had the first real cover system (that I can remember). The whole 'you get shot and have to wait to recover' thing was in Getaway. I just find it interesting that the game got such low scores, and is rarely talked about, but it did try a lot of new things which ended up in the large amount of current-gen games.Gears of Wars owes itself to The Getaway. Thanks team Soho, without you Gears of War would not exist.

Recharging health was never innovation. Its more of a step back of you ask me. Most games these days can't even use the system right.

Mafia on PC had realistic driving.
Winback on N64 had a cover system.
And Halo had that whole recharging health thing before the getaway.
I always thought of it as a sidestep. It solved some of the issues with getting health packs, but it created new ones. Both sitting in a corner and regenerating health, and running over a health pack doesn't require much skill. The problem with health packs is that you could sometimes get stuck with a checkpoint with little health that was extremely difficult even if you had full health, so it now becomes impossible. The way developers used to counter this was to place health packs everywhere but then that meant there would be some parts where you'd luck out and have more health packs left over and then you ration them over the next sections, and the game becomes a cakewalk. This is one of the reasons why it is frustrating for me to play Half-life 2 other than for the story. The developers don't know how to deal with the fact that everyone plays differently, so the cop out is to give the player regenerating health.Recharging health was never innovation. Its more of a step back of you ask me. Most games these days can't even use the system right.
