A majority of PC gamers who complain about DRM are hypocrites.

[QUOTE="metroidfood"]No they aren't.

Buying a used game is not equivalent to pirating a game. :|dc337

Morally, I'd argue that it is.

A potential retail sale lost to the used game market is equivalent to a potential retail sale lost to piracy.

If you're buying a used title, NONE of the money in that purchase is going to the people who worked hard to make that game. Same thing happens with counterfeiters.

No it isn't morally equal because that used copy was at one time purchased new. A used game can only be re-sold so many times while a pirated version can be copied infinitely. Used games are a legal aspect of the industry while piracy is illegal.

I also don't see a list of developers complaining about used consoles sales. PC piracy on the other hand......

You should look harder.:(

Because Piracy is a well known evil, and everyone takes it as that. Used games are accepted by society, but have a similar impact, most used games are $5-$10 less than full price, for a long time, and I still always see people buying it for that instead of going for the full priced one, any discount is a great discount for most people. Its true that one copy can only be used by one person at once, but its still a person playing a game without the developer seeing a penny for his purchase.

[QUOTE="MFDOOM1983"]

secuROM doesn't allow me to install my copy of oblivion goty edition:? I wouldnt have this problem if i pirated the game.

MFDOOM1983

wait what? my goty edition doesnt even ask me for a cd key, i didnt even know it had drm. ive installed it multiple times on 2 different computer buildss.

I installed it on my secondary pc but every time I try to install it on my main pc some securom message pops up and prevents me from installing it.

thats odd. i have had oblivivion installed on the main computer, the laptop, and the old computer had it installed before it died. never had a secure rom message pop up.

Really doesn't matter, for every game with drm there are 200 without it. Nothing will every really stop piracy. There are even millions who pirate and play WoW on private servers every day.nmaharg

The PS3 doesn't have piracy and OnLive is impossible to pirate. WoW has private servers but other MMOs are impossible to pirate because too much data is dependent on the server.

Ubisoft's DRM lasted a month and they'll probably just get better at it. If pc gamers want these DRM schemes to go away then they need to start buying more games.

Why don't you provide a link then? The 'used games are just as bad' argument is used by pc gamers who try and rationalize the rampant piracy that exists on the pc platform. All these rationalizations don't mean jack to companies who can see which platform is clearly the worst when it comes to piracy.

Nothing is impossible to pirate, just hasn't been done yet, or there isn't enough people interested in it.

FYI lots of games have had semi successful drm, yet they all had it removed on there sequels. Bioshock comes to mind.

Piracy is far more destructive because there is no limit on how many times a pirated version can be copied and the pirated version is always $0.

When a new game comes out the used copy at least requires money to purchase which makes the new copy more closer in price. Many people like myself have no problem with paying 5 or 10 more dollars for a new copy. Companies can use DLC to add even more value to the new copy.

Game companies would much rather compete with a limited number of $50-55 used copies than an infinite number of $0 pirated copies.

Tell me how Onlive can be pirated when you are only being fed a video stream based on your actions.

[QUOTE="ZIMdoom"]

Maybe you don't understand the real situation. According to PC users that post here, none of them have ever illegally copied anything ever. In fact, according to them, there is hardly an PC piracy AT ALL and therefore their rights to play any game they want any way or any time they want are being violated unfairly and for no reason.

The_Capitalist

Oh, how naive you are. Then explain how 250,000 people jumped on the Mass Effect 2 torrents when it released? "If there is hardly any PC piracy."

I'm with you bro. For you guys, just call customer support and they'll help or give your money back. And if your too lazy to do that than you've got a problem. For PC devs who spend ages on their games and spend lots of money just to see their games distastefully stolen of the internet is alot more annoying than some guys not getting their game to work yet not bothering to return the game.

Yeah. And where do you think copied PC games come from? From a new, legally-purchased copy.

A used game can only be re-sold so many times while a pirated version can be copied infinitely. Used games are a legal aspect of the industry while piracy is illegal.

I also don't see a list of developers complaining about used consoles sales. PC piracy on the other hand......dc337

I wasn't talking about legality. I was talking about the avoidance of paying money to the people who made a product inherent in buying a used game. Why do we consider piracy and counterfeiting to be bad? Because it screws over the people who originally made the product. The used game market does the same thing by leeching away potential retail sales.

The only difference is that there's a higher amount of sales loss potential in piracy than the used games market. Does that make it alright in your eyes? Is it alright simply because it hurts the industry *less* than piracy? Both are morally corrupt in my opinion.

I'm no hacker, but I have little doubt there is someone out there who knows what would need to be done.

In general terms though, the information being sent to you is data. This data has to get to you. Data over the world wide web is never 100% safe.

DRM in all its forms never has, nor ever will, prevent piracy. It only serves to annoy legitimate customers.

nmaharg

It's all processed on the server. The only thing being sent over the internet is a video file that was created based on your input.

Even though the PS3 doesn't have piracy it is still possible since the game data exists on the discs. With OnLive there is no local game data. All you're doing is sending mouse and keyboard movements to the server while Onlive sends you a video. There is nothing to copy but a video recording of you playing the game.

The DRM in the ps3 has been cracked. Pirated games are assuredly soon to follow.
