Here it is - Its a new (updated, actually) console. The GP2X (F200). Touch-screen, awesome features... you need to read about it if you haven't already. Its out on October 10th. I am surprised that nobody knows about it! I have asked gamespot if they can dedicate some news to it, or an article as it has its own official games. And its linux - totally open source so you make your own games on it aswell. SD cards are its storage medium. Check out www.gp2x.co.uk for more info on it. Plays movies, music, it plugs right into your tv.. You can also plug it onto a dock with usb ports - which you can then attach controllers, keyboards, harddrives... use it is a media-hub or home console/computer :D http://uk.gamespot.com/users/GrimBee/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25169946 Thats my synopsis on it, so enjoy the bizzarre read!

its quite impressive. im especially interested in the development side. however its always been a bit on the expensive side imho and game selection isnt brilliant. if im a little more flush i might pick one up to play around with development. looks very interesting.

Any console that has a name that reads like a component from a fighter jet usually fails.

The gp2x has been going for some two years now. And FLOP isn't even a word related to the handheld because it grows from what you make of it. It is regular people who make apps for it, for free. And thats whats great about it. No way is it a PSP or DS. But if you personally want a device that plays retro stuff (not the official games) - i.e you want a virtual console in your hands. Then this is perfect. You seriously need so see one in action. go to youtube and type in GP2X --- here, I'll do it for you -. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_NrTS_ut74&mode=related&search= . If you are into the old classics - the DS and PSP can't play them like the gp2x can, so its well worth the price. Especially considering that you can plug it right into your TV, plug in usb harddrives, keyboards, joypads and use it as a home-console for retro. No need to convert video files, just drag them on, same with music. For the amount of things that it does, and with it being open-source - hence, FREE PROGRAMS, the lifecycle of the console will probably out-last the PSP and DS because it is the community which keeps the console going with the updated applications and things. And there is literally no other handheld that can deliver features like this - and full-speed metal slug :D

So it's a do-it-all handheld, while riding on piracy to cover your gaming needs? No thanks.

That's an incredible fanboy name. We should apply it to one of the more mainstream fanboys.

Or maybe we should just use it when we refer to Sony.

Hahaha thats so funny but I have a better idea why not use that to classify all fanboys, like yourself.

That looks interesting thought you should have said new handheld because I thought that Atari came back or something.

Seems kinda cool thought may check it out.

I'm not a fanboy of any one perticular console.

But there is something wrong with being told that I have to accept all consoles. Playstation 3 doesn't appeal to me. So what?

"So it's a do-it-all handheld, while riding on piracy to cover your gaming needs? No thanks. " Piracy is what you do personally. For example, the Gp2x play's backup games, or ported versions of games you already SHOULD own in your collection. It is exactly the same if you have a CD and then put the music onto your computer, and then onto an ipod. you then have several instances of the same songs. You see, the handheld is open source. No other handheld is open source. The DS has two screens and Nintendo games - no other handheld has that. The PSP has UMD's and brilliant 3d graphics - also a unique attribute. The Gp2x plays all the old stuff and divx movies etc etc - more unique attributes. GPH (who design the handheld) make their money from hardware sales. Sony make their money from media formats and software sales when it comes to the console business. Nintendo rely on hardware sales AND software sales. Neither Sony nor Nintendo allow their console to be run by linux and have games on it that people make themselves. So the gp2x is not directly competing against the PSP and the DS. The gp2x is legal, it is annoying why people think that using emulators is illegal. Whats so illegal about using the gp2x to play your own games that you make, or playing movies that you already have, or playing music that you already own? It is just as easy to commit piracy on it as it is a PC - It is up to the user to get involved with illegal activity. But just because a handheld is open source - does not mean that it is involved with piracy. I am getting this for all the open source stuff, and intend to use it in legal ways. Same as I do with my ipod, phone, PC... etc. Units which let you play backup stuff is perfectly legal. And you can't judge hardware that is open-source to be only for people who want to pirate software... you are just nurtured in the ways of exploitation. I mean, I have 9 copies of Sonic the hedgehog for the megadrive, all still sealed from 1991 (i collect megadrive stuff). For me to play this game on the gp2x is wonderful. For me to pay for the virtual console version which has borders, 50hz... etc... you have to question where gaming is going today. The gp2x, to me, is a breath of fresh air for handheld users. I have a PSP and a DS lite. But I cannot watch divx movies that I have made on them, I also cannot listen to chiptunes on the psp... neither can I play the classic games that I already own. Freeware games like doom for example - all perfectly playable on the gp2x - yet people think that it piracy. :S

Ohmadayz, that thing s a total copy of the DS. It'll probably flop anyway seeing as new companies hardly ever squeeze their way into console wars. Esp the smaller companies.

You do know this isn't trying to compete with the DS or PSP right? Its for those who enjoy an open source platform where they can create applications and use them. The GPX has a very large community that is as dedicated and supportive of it as sheep, cows, and lemmings are of their system. You might want to do some research before saying things like "teh flopp!!!!" or "Gizmondo 2".

Where did I say you have to accept all consoles I'm just saying is there any reason for you to be bashing Sony fanboys when the other fanboys are just as bad if not worse. If you don't like it fine just don't try and bash the people on the system you don't like. Or tell lies.

lol -- the gp2x aint no "vii" haha. It plays no DS or PSP games, it is a serious media playing device (better than the PSP, and cheaper) and can do what you want it to. That means you can write software for it, or get someone with experience at coding to write software for it. The community is strong, because it is the people that keep the console going - not fads or exclusive games. :D
