You might find this a dumb question but anyway

If Silver membership offers everything Gold membership does but the only difference is you pay $50 for Gold and Silver is free.

I repeat, in this case Silver = Gold in terms of service, online capabilities etc.

My question is, would you still pay for Gold membership?

If you chose Silver, then it clearly shows that you do not have any other choice but to pay for XBL Gold just so you could play your games online. Not because its worth paying for it. Tell me, how else are you going to play Halo3 or your MW2 online? Its not because XBL Gold is so awesome but paying is the only way.

EDIT: Would you still pay for Gold if Silver offers online multiplayer?

If they were both the same then why would you pay? Anyway, it's clear people pay for the multiplayer. I know it's a great service, but I wouldn't pay if the multiplayer was free.

Exactly my point, if Silver offers the same but for free why wouldnt they choose that route? was it because Gold is so worth every penny?

I don't get it. If they were the same then you'd choose the free one :| Gold is just for multiplayer.

If I could just play my games online and it was free, I would for sure do that.

I don't use my console as a phone to call the immature or 6 year olds on Xbox Live.

I don't use the crappy radio stations because I already have a few hundred gigs of music, and more than I need.

I don't rent the movies because I can just download them.

And I don't buy terrible arcade games because...well I don't need them.

So the only thing I actually use it for is to play online and really only for Halo and Left 4 Dead. So I would love to have it for free to just play. But I guess nobody these days could have friends unless they pay for them. :P

I'm currently a Gold membership member and haven't been Silver for over two years.

Here's my understanding. Silver level can only play online on the weekends.

Gold can play anytime, get access to demos, deals on games.

I could be wrong and I may be missing something... but there you go on the difference between Silver and Gold.

this is a really dumb question. Like if two cars that are exactly identical are beside each other and you can have one for free and the other you pay, which would you choose. Anyone with half a brain would take the free one.

I have no idea what you are trying to prove here

Gold is to play multiplayer games online and other features, if Silver could do that, who would pay? Heck, why would there even be two options of Silver and Gold? There'd be no point.

The reason for this dumb question was Im trying to make a point. I find it hard to believe when people say XBL Gold is worth every penny when they'll easilly ditch it if Silver offers the same service but only free. We pay for XBL for the sake of gaming online.

No no no, you are missing the point I am trying to make here. Of course its dumb to offer 2 identical services only the other one is free. My case is some people claims that they pay for live because the service it self is worth every money they pay for. If they chose silver, that negates the fact that they said Gold was worth every penny.

When people say that they are obviously speaking about the current model of gold offering more than silver. Why would that also apply to a theoretical situation as well? Its almost like you expect some one to say gold is better than gold, when that argument cant be made since they are exactly the same thing.

It's worth every penny because it offers service that Silver does not. I... how is that even difficult to understand?

edit: and yes, that service is a reliable, consistent online gaming framework. I'm more of a PC gamer than everybody on this forum save AdrianWerner (sup!), and I still love the crap out of Live and honestly miss it on the PC or PS3.

The 'early' demos and everything else can all DIAF for all I care, though Netflix is nice.

Do you know that your question makes no sense whatsoever. You just asked that if silver and gold were the same would you choose the free one or the one you pay for but you gave no differentiation between the two. Like another user said it just would be easier if you asked if you stripped out all the functions of xbox live gold and just gave us str8 up multiplayer would you rather pay for gold or play for free with silver and believe me there is a mega difference on your dashboard between silver and gold. But i understand that you hate paying for live who doesnt but is the money i pay for it worth it of course it is would i rather have all the features for free of course i would but asking questions like the one you asked is just flamebait.

I know where you're coming from and I understand it but I think you are missing my point. Its really not a rocket science. Aint no argument to begin with, its as simple as if Gold is worth every penny you pay and that it deserves the money you shell out then why would they ditch it for a free service that technically offers the same service. There's no other way of explaining this, If you don't get it then I'm sorry. I myself is not good at explaining either.

I think he's trying to bring out those silly people who say "I like paying for Xbox Live". To them I'd ask the question, well if you like paying for it so much, then why not pay more so the people who don't wanna pay for it can play for free?

Of course $5 a month or whatever it is now isn't that big of a deal, but I'd rather not pay for something if I don't have to. I'm not a Gold Member anymore because I don't play online anymore, but it would nice if I could get on every so often and play a match without paying the fee.

Reading all the comments and replies I can safely assume that people will go to the free Silver route if it offers everything that Gold offers.

Then the point shows that, we pay for gold not because its worth it or that the service deserves the $40 to 50 a year but paying is the only way to play our games online.

I think it's fairly obvious that almost nobody would pay for the additional services if the online MP was free. It's a good strategy though, it's worked very well for MS.

It's kinda obvious. Xbox Live people say they are fine with paying for Gold because it gives them a better service than that with the PS3, but the only difference between that service and the FREE Silver service is the online component (at least it's the difference people care about the most). And so, when people say they are paying for a better service, they aren't. They're simply paying to play online, which if given the choice, they would not pay for it.

This is a very complicated question you asked here TC. If both Xbox Live Silver and Gold were free, would I still pay for Gold? If they have the exact same features and benefits. Hmmm....I need to do more research on my answer, like I said this is an extremely complicated scenario.

No, not if both silver and gold are free, silver is free and offers anything that gold offers. If paying for Gold is worth it, then why would they ditch it for the free and identical service (Silver).

I understood the question its the same reason why pirates dont pay for games on pc. Why pay for a game when i can get it for free its the same concept you would be a fool to pay for gold if silver offered ALL of the same things gold offered. But thats not the scenario look at how a silver members dashboard looks compared to gold there is a difference then finding out that most of the stuff is only available to gold members would piss anyone off. But if someone told me i had to pay for PSN tomorrow i wouldnt pay for it as it is now cause it doesnt offer what LIVE offers period.

I myself is a Gold subscriber, I don't think Gold got a major component in the service that would justify paying for it. Sure early access to demos are nice but really you will drop $50 for it? That leaves us asking ourselves "how the heck do we play our game online?" then boom that's where the Gold membership comes into play. You pay to play online.

SIlver dashboard looks crap because MS made it so people will think Gold is really that worth it. Its a marketing ploy really.

I would still pay for Gold as I want the best service for my favorite console. And no, I'm not one of those guys who spent $150 on the Halo 3 Legendary edition to get the helmet :P

The reason for this dumb question was Im trying to make a point. I find it hard to believe when people say XBL Gold is worth every penny when they'll easilly ditch it if Silver offers the same service but only free. We pay for XBL for the sake of gaming online.

Gold is worth the money, if only to play with my friends.

If Silver did the exact same, as was free ofcourse i'd chose silver. Not 'cause Gold isn't worth it, but because free is free.

This questions is stupid ... If i hada choice between two Ferraris exactly the same except, one is free and theother 30k, im going to pick the free one.

Why would anyone pay for a service if it offers all the same features for free?

I love hypothetical-s! I have one: If an Xbox 360 could play every PS3 game and was free, would you still buy a PS3? If you choose getting the Xbox 360, then it clerly shows that you do not have any other choice but to pay for a PS3 just so you could play your games. Not because it's worth paying for it. Tell me, how else are you going to play Heavy Rain and Demon Souls? It's not because the PS3 is so awesome but paying is the only way. Yay, silly topics are silly.

Well it looks like you dont know the meaning of logic. Why pay for something when it doesn't increase the value/appeal/quality of the product? Might as well throw money into a fire

I would still pay, because it's our subscriptions that help make Live so good in the first place.
