Agree with Red Dead Redemption.

I also really liked, believe it or not, Splinter Cell Conviction.

I think everybody in this thread that is giving the MGS franchise alot of negative energy should play and beat the first Metal Gear Solid game for the PS1, and then come back to this thread and give their opinions. MGS is actually a great series overall and I think people are just hating on it because it is popular.

Meh, I don't really think any game story has been that memorable, especially compared to a novel. However, one story I liked was Morrowind's. The expansive lore in that game added greatly to the richness of the plot, and let you emphasize with the characters.

I thought GTA IV was very strong in those areas. :s

I agree, in fact I would say that Rockstar have come up with some of my favourite storys, Red Dead Remption and San Adreas in particular.

Alan Wakes story impressed me, and so did Heavy Rain.

GTA4 good story? No.

No, the plot has plenty of twists and turns... but I can live with that. The problem is that it got convoluted and crazy the further we get into the series.

MGS is knowns for it's wierd characters and notably bad dialogue. The first game, while the tamest of the bunch is still rife with ridiculous dialogue choices.

I would have to agree. But play it on the DS because it is so much better. Anyway, all of the Ace Attorney games are top notch.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

One of my favorite series' of all-time. Just some quality s***!

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]The first game is like that. Then with each successive game they tried harder to make it 'funny' and Flanderized all the characters, until finally we get the shameful POS known as Apollo Justice. At least Investigations showed some improvement, but the damage is done.

No on all accounts... Just no...

Ace Attorney series has possibly the greatest story ever in a video game IMO. Not to mention they're some of the best games ever made too. I was one of the people who thought Apollo Justice was absolute **** but after playing it another time the game was actually pretty brilliant. Just felt a bit rushed is all. Also I gotta give props to the sound designers. Their music is legendary. I got a few CDs off eBay with the soundtracks.

Can't wait for Ace Attorny Investigations 2. It better come stateside cause the first is my favorite game.

ChubbyGuy40
I believe it will come stateside given the sales of Investigations 2 in Japan. Was number 1 the week it came out!

I don't hate anybody. Is she slightly annoying? Sure, but Maya was a bit too :P Trucy more though  Plus I just really enjoyed the new presentation of the game. The ending left a bit to be desired and I hope the next Ace Attorney game in the main series is Apollo Justice 2 just so we can learn more about him. He really needs another game to flesh him out. Still, he will never surpass Phoenix :P

I've played a lot of games that had stories that impressed me. I don't know why so many people are picky about stories in video games, you can't expect them to be like movies.

Have you seen Transformers 2?! I say they are on the same level of summer blockbusters.

Eh, Maya was all right. She wasn't my favorite, but I liked that she was a fairly down-to-earth character and was't sexualized or anything...whereas within the first 30 minutes of Apollo Justice you're looking for Trucy's panties. And BTW she's 15. :| As for Apollo, he just seems like a redesign of Phoenix with less personality. I understand the motivation for having a new lead character, but I think Edgeworth works a lot better in that role. Plus the gameplay of Investigations is a really good progression from the GBA games (except for scrapping the court scenes).

Valkyria Chronicles really impressed me story wise, easily one of the best, if not the best videogame story I've ever seen. Plus the game kicked arse as well :)

How've you not even heard of it? :| Anyway, great games, really fun puzzles and all, but I don't think the story is impressive at all when put up against good movies and books.

Agreed. I actually felt some emotion and even attachment to the various characters. Not many games can really do that. I highly recommend that you try out Ghost Trick too.

I am rarely impressed by a story in videogames because imho videogame is not a good medium to tell a story.

Anyway last time I was impressed by a story in videogame was probably Mass Effect 1.

Yes it does. Far better than MGS some times. But I have to say RDR has better story. And Ghost Trick is actually better than Phoenix Wright.

And 999 is better than Ghost Trick.

Ghost Trick is excellent though. 999 is just so beautiful.

NIER and RDR are the big ones for me. Neither have perfect pacing but the storytelling is very impressive regardless.

Uncharted 2 impressed me the most this gen, i missed out on the first so i got the fixed version, it was a great story with good variation and funny characters, more down to earth characters with no really cheesy jokes.. Either that i'm a bit cheesy in my taste of jokes but whatever.

The reason I love MGS so much is because of its over the top story, and larger than life characters. Is it realistic? No, and I don't see why that should be an issue at all. I've yet to come across a story in gaming that has engaged me more than MGS, or characters that interested me more than MGS. Kojima stated that set out to create, and I quote, "a story that could only work in a video game". And you know what? He did. He **** did. The story's stupid, nonsensical, irreverent, pretentious, over the top, crazy...but by God, I love it.

If all people look for in a story is realism, then...I'm afraid you've chosen the wrong medium. Why are people judging a story of a game by saying if it works out side of the medium, then it somehow is good? GTA IV's story has been done many, many times in movies and books, yet it's praised as soon as it is turned into video game form. Same with Ace Attorney, it's like any generic TV drama. Nothing special. Why? Because somehow video games are a "lesser" medium than movies. Books? Nothing will ever beat a good book in-terms of story, or storytelling. However the audacity people have that movies are "still* of a higher level than games is just astounding. Most of the movies we consider classics, or movies these days that people think will be considered classics in the future, are one's where the story makes no sense. But does that mean it's bad? Hell no.

2001? Makes no sense, pretentious,

Lord Of The Rings? Based on a book which makes no sense.

Star Wars IV-VI? Crazy sci-fi is crazy.

For every classic movie, there is a game equivalent. Yet it's the GAME that is blasted for not being realistic.
