[QUOTE="starwarsgeek112"]God people go play System Shock 2.EltrozWhat a well thought out post on why Bioshock does not deserve praise. I think you just convinced everyone with such a strong debate.

System Shock 2 was a massive commercial flop and came out over 8 years ago.
I think most on this board who claim to have played System Shock 2 are probably full of it.

Bioshock. BEST. GAME. EVER.
not really. But it is pretty good. It deserves all the praise it gets.

At least they didn't mess with the old formula. They only made it really simple for consoles.

While I enjoyed SS2 when I played through it for the first time a few weeks ago, I must say that BioShock does not feel like a watered down version of SS2. SS2 was much more complex and such, but complexity does not necessarily entail awesomeness (in spite of the fact that SS2 was awesome), and the complexity was an attempt to make it into an RPG-FPS hybrid, while BioShock was designed more as a FPS with a few RPG elements. As such, they cannot be effectively compared; they are completely different. Indeed, they are almost as different as Mass Effect and Halo.
Man Im glad you made this thread. now you and all 3 of the people who agree with you can spout of trivial jargon to their hearts content. JPOBS
I'm sure that you'll find many people on these forums that agree with him.
While System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are amazing, so is BioShock. Get over it.BioShockOwnz
But they are still completely different. The first two are RPG-FPS hybrids, while the other is an FPS with RPG elements.
BioShock is still my GotY anyways (haven't played Mass Effect), barely eaking its way out in front of Supreme Commander (Best RTS I've ever played, but my graphics card burned out on me due to a crappy old power supply, so my dad got the cheapest piece of crap he could find...).
Stop. No, seriously TC, just stop.
I have played SS2. Alot. It is a great game. It is better than Bioshock in many areas. It is, without a doubt, one of my top 5 games of all time.
And guess what? Bioshock is a great game as well.
Is Bioshock's customization shallow compared to SS2? Yes.
Is Bioshock easier? Yes.
Is Bioshock simpler? Yes.
Do either of these things do anything to prevent Bioshock from being one of the greatest games of all time? No. Hell no.
Bioshock beats SS2 on several levels: It has better writing, better voice acting, a better audio visual presentation, a better story, a better setting, and more thrilling, visceral, intense, and rewarding combat.
Cut the elitist "SS2 is so much superior" stuff, because I have news for you: SS2 is not perfect. No game is. It has its share of flaws and problems, despite being one of the best games I have ever played.
I am tired of you people spouting your Bioshock hate: System Shock 2 came out in 1999. It is now 2007. Eight years. It has been eight years, and still, you people were not ready to try something else.
Don't you get it? Bioshock and System Shock 2 complement eachother. They go well together. They play nice. I've seen them holding hands once or twice.
PLAY BOTH DAMN GAMES.
They are both awesome games; they just excel in different areas.
But whatever you do, please cut this elitist garbage stuff about how Bioshock is "teh newb".
Ken Levine and company work their asses off to create a great game, and they succeed, and still, all you people can do is complain that it is not similar enough to a game that came out in 1999. :|
Leave Bioshock alone; it is a great game, and it sure as hell doesn't deserve anyone's hate, so STOP IT.

The FPS and combat was actually very standard. Plus the enemies do the same annoying lunging attack (are they all clones?) right down to the same animation.
But the story and atmosphere and attention to detail (Fort Frolic stands out) is amazing, some of the best I've seen in any video game ever. If they could somehow keeping that level of quality and improving the FPS mechanics it will be an even better game.
