The PS3 isnt a flop, it's just losing Sony money. It's selling fine, especially considering it's price. Besides, I dont think Sony was counting so much on making money off of the PS3 (selling it at a 200 dollar loss at the beginning of this gen) but rather that they were counting on making money off of Blu Ray winning the format war. We'll see how that pans out for them.
But anyway, the PS3 is still a precious tool for Sony. There are lots of ways for them to make money off of the system to help recover costs, like the downloadable movie/tv show thing they have now. Not to mention when Home hits they will probably charge for micro transactions and have ads posted all over the place to help recover.
Yeah, they've lost alot, but the Playstation brand is too powerful for Sony to let go or whatever. It's a tool that helped them when the format war against a cheaper competitor, HDDVD. Not too many companies could come out a little later than HDDVD, with higher costs and still win the format war. I think Sony will keep the Playstation brand around as long as they can.

Uh, hate to break it to ya, but if a company produces a product, to sell and profot from, and it doesn't sell as well as hoped, and it not only doesn't make them profit, but costs them more money, that IS a flop. That's not opinion either, thats basic business. PS3 IS A FLOP.
Now, thats from a manufacturers view, from an end user's view, it is still getting games to their living room, however it still lacks to the competition in many places, so its a let down, but not a flop to an end user.
