No one can deny that the Wii has the lowest percentage of quality titles out of the console makers here is a link.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2008/02/wii-average-game-scores-markedly-lower-than-competition.ars

It has the lowest percentage of good games but has the highest sales by a very large margin...what kind of message does that send to the other console makers and game makers? That in this new huge casual market for gamers, you can spend a very small amount on hardware and software and still make huge profits because the casual gamers will eat it up...

BlancoBX

i can also point to the ps2 and ps1... both of which dominated in sales AND had more shovelware than their competitors

it doesnt change the fact that the best selling console will get the most shovelware. this is nothing new... considering that gaming is bigger than ever, how is it not a surprise that smaller companies with weak attempts will try to cash in.

true but what you fail to realize is that the wii is catered more to the casual than any other console ever...so if other companies see the nintendo (cater to casual)formula as a way to make crazy profits (which nintendo is making) and they start to do the same and the sales numbers for each console are comparable wouldnt all those consoles have huge amounts of shovelware as well?

The bottom line is catering to the casual gamer will make these companies richer while in turn diluting the gaming industry in the future. As all these new casual gamers come in, the hardcore gaming community becomes a smaller and smaller minority, and making games for a such a small minority wouldnt be worth it to companies because they wont make as much money as they would if they developed smaller budgeted casual games

since you like to look at sales, how come you dont notice that core games consistently sell in the millions while only a few casual games reach that mark?

so wiiplay and wiifit are hits... big deal. halo, cod, gta ALL broke sales records this gen.... you think companies are gonna ignore that?

I dont blame them. It helps with their fitness.

IDK taking a kid to the park and making them do fitness sounds better than sitting in front of tv jerking a wii mote around.

Kind of sad, but I guess real quality games are more ofa niche market. Games like Wii sports or Wii Play, the Sims, etc. just have an appeal to the broader market.

BlancoBX

exactly. the appeal of casual games is that they are quick to learn and easy to get in to, unlike hardcore games that take more time and devotion to learn.

most people dont have time to play a game for 2-6 hours a day. i have been noticing this with myself as well. been so busy that i simply cannot sit down and play for more than 2 hours at a time anymore

even this proves my point...quality games are going to become a smaller and smaller niche market, until it will be totally abandoned by gaming companies if the casual trend keeps going...

heh. do you have any real world examples of such a thing happening?

did you ever think of this: casual gamers that really like gaming will turn into hardcore gamers? there will NEVER be just casuals or just hardcore... there will always be a mix

and how much more did those games take to develop than wii fit and wii play? you cant honestly tell me that the budgets on halo, cod, and gta are all equal to or less than that of wii fit or wii play...xbox and ps3 already went the way they did this gen which was to cater more to the hardcore than nintendo did so of course they are going to put out games that would cater to their customers...but if they change their gameplan and try to get into the casual market, which nintendo has proven to be less costly, with more chance of huge profits, do you think they are still going to be bothered with making big budget games like Halo and COD?

So like I said in my original post, I really hope they dont abandon us non-casual gamers, but with the way nintendo went showing to be much more profitable, whats to stop them from following suit? and once non-casual gamers become a very small % of gamers in general, then the amount of quality hard core games will diminish

you simply dont understand nintendos plan. they want to have non-gamers play games, hoping that they would turn into casual gamers and then hardcore gamers. NOBODY starts out as a hardcore gamer. people that think gaming is on the decline cause of casuals are delusional. they are trying to achieve the opposite of that...

also, making casual games DOES NOT mean success. you are citing the exception instead of the rule

the companies are looking at the whole picture, which shows that games targeted at hardcore gamers sell better and more consistently than casual games

are you really that impatient? thats just silly

their plan isnt a 3 month plan or something. they are looking gens ahead, not a few years... or months like some people here

those older people you mentioned have kids. if they play games, most likely their kids will play too and hopefully they will like it and it will turn into a life-long hobby.... its not that hard to understand the plan

It's a controller that comes with a game, for the price of a controller. Any household consisting of more than one person should own it.

When you consider that it's really a $10 game (once you subtract the cost of the controller), Wii Play is one of the best values in the history of video games.

ok, so why dont you first prove that it IS a PR stunt... i mean, you are the one making the accusations. its time to back them up...

once again, their plan is really not hard to understand, its already been done before but in a different market:

nintendos plan is to focus making games for people that werent used to having games made for them. the purpose is to draw more people to our hobby. this is pretty much what Apple has been doing for years now. you are probably too young to remember, but the PC was used mainly by geeks and hardcore techs, not everyday people... thats until apple came along and started making them for everybody. in other words, simpler and easily accessible. sound familiar? now we have more people using pc's than ever... nintendo is trying to accomplish the same thing but with videogames.

just look at the facts. you cannot deny that videogames are more popular, making more money, releasing more games, and getting more support than ever

Look at it another way. Do you think a company like Commodore Business Machines would've gone out on a limb and produced home computers like the VIC-20 and the ever-famous Commodore 64 if they didn't see the runaway success Apple was having with its Apple II line? I was a kid when this war hit its stride, but I still remember enough of it (and have researched the gaps) to know what was happening.

That is a genius idea. Battlefield 1943 and a controller would definitely do it for me.

That is a genius idea. Battlefield 1943 and a controller would definitely do it for me.

Doesn't Microsoft bundle Worms with some of their bigger memory cards?

I figured it would be some garbage. I dont even consider that a game or anyone who plays it a gamer.

It's the controller, everyone figures they pay for the controller and get the game for like $5...

Also, when wii-play came out, it was near impossible to find controllers in stores.

That's actually why I bought wii-play when it first came out...pre-ordered it even, wanted the extra controller :D

I dont blame them. It helps with their fitness.

IDK taking a kid to the park and making them do fitness sounds better than sitting in front of tv jerking a wii mote around.

"making" a kid do anything is borderline abusive. Going to the park and playing with the kid would probably work better. On topic, who cares what the top selling game is? I don't see the significance to why some are complaining.

I am not really all that surprise since the casual fans far outweigh the hardcore ones!
