Ace Combat Assault Horizon GS Review - 5.5

i knew there was something wrong when i saw the E3 demo and the guy was just blowing up enemies at will. i'm sad, i wanted a jetfighter simulator...BrunoBRS

Ace combat will never be a Jet simulator so there wasnt a point in getting your hopes up for the game to begin with.

I thought the demo had a lot of potential. Sad to hear the game is basically the demo for a few hours. If there was more control and open fights I would have loved it.

Edit: and isn't it nice to hear an official reviewer say "It is so busy being a movie that it forgets to be a game"

Well to be extremely frank, the "hit x to win" has never really left the series. The games have always been fairly simple.

That said though, after seeing how they handled the dog-fights in the game, I definitely had my doubts. Sure the series have always been simple, but then again, that should've been the developers hint that simplifying it more doesn't necessarily make it better, even if it is an arcade centered game.

I'm still yet to play the 6th instalment though, so I'll have to go through that before I even try this one.

Let's hope Gamespot use Dark Souls as the framework for grading UC3...where the less "game" there is in Uncharted 3's campaign, the worse it is.

Oh god......this has destroyed my hype for the game. And I was planning on picking the game up today :/

I'll wait for more reviews, and Wadsie's review for sure. It's sad though, I actually enjoyed the demo once I put it to original control scheme. Plus i took the TGT_LEAD out without DFM.

Just got an email for $10 credit from Amazon. I actually forgot about that. I pre-ordered it when Amazon had it for $44.99. So even if it's mediocore, $44.99-$10 promo is not bad at all. Hopefully the TIV remains around $30 for a couple weeks (or at least ebay values).

Gosh no!! This was going to be my first ACE Combat game since 04!! I was so excited about it! Stop following it do to college and now it gets a 5.5.. the trailers and demo's looked great! D:

The original post took the words right out of my mouth, this game was on my must have list for the year... right after i played the Demo (And i rarely download demos of anything) I knew that this nearly on rails piece of garbage was not Ace Combat, as a fan of all the PS2 AC games i can say and wholeheartedly agree that Project aces went hopelessly astray from their roots which made the series great and one of my favorites. If i cant control the direction of my plane through the entire mission and maneuver until i can lock on my enemy targets for missile barrages or gun the bandits down all by myself, then the excitement of dogfighting was stripped from the game.

Ace Combat is another franchise hit by the multiplat curse i guess.

After getting a little into this game. Early impression: 5.5 feels harsh. Probably more in the 7.0-8.0 range.

Although some of the complaints in the article are valid, they seem to inconsistently mark off points for some games and not others. Do they ever take off points from Call of Duty for it's "soulless machismo"? I doubt it. The presentation here is definitely more of that Call of Duty ilk, than what you'd expect out of a Japanese game (or an Ace Combat game). Yet nothing is really broken here, it's got nice presentation, nice polish, and most importantly it is FUN (so far). Just like other games that seem to take a hit more for the name on the sleeve than the game itself - it doesn't fit into the little box defined for it by the PS2 era Ace Combat games and thus Gamespot punished it for that. Once again I think it's safe to ignore the Gamespot review and just look at metacritic.

The air to air combat isn't as bad as the demo.

The demo was kind of poor example because it was basically the tutorial to the game, and all the little pauses for instructions kind of spoil the action. Once you get to the regular missions the flying is actually pretty intense - and entering into "dogfight mode" is pretty seamless. I kind of think of this dogfight mode like "Deadeye" in red dead redemption. I don't think Gamespot docked that game points for being "too easy". Just like in Red Dead I think I have only been using the dogfight mode when I get in a jam, sometimes you have to take out 3 or 4 planes while you have another one on your tail, and actually it's pretty cool they way it works at times.

The only other flight games I've played this gen are IL-2 Sturmovik and Apache:Air assault. I like both of these quite all right, but they lean towards being more realistic (and sometimes a bit TOO methodical to be 100% fun). This game delivers a fast paced experience. It might be shallow. But so what? So were the past Ace Combat games on PS2.

The only complaint I have is that after playing Apache: Air Assualt, the helicopter section(s) in Ace Combat seems like a joke - I guess it's there for variety but that element of the game seems very poorly executed.

Let me try it for myself. :) I don't trust GS.

lol spend a day learning how to take off and just fly in a straight line, flght sims are hard. Play Lock On Modern Air Combat, simulators are not what you want Ace Combat to be. Plus if it were real, you'd be landing to re-arm every few of enemies.

because of what VanOrd says oh wait i forget its system wars, all i was saying is that its scoring AA everywhere else even on Eurogamer a site well known for being harsh.Then gamespot throws a curveball into the mix just to essentially be controversial like Forza 4,Infamous 2 this year aswell.

All it was was a quick look at it seems strange its scoring so low on here but scoring decently elsewhere its nothing about me buying the game or caring it was just an analysis of the reviews dont read too much into it champ.

I like the game.I see no problems with it.Reviewer's can say how much they don't like a game thats their problem.But as for me I waited to long for this game.HAWX never took off with me.

Bad year for flying games. First Cliffs of Dover gets released in alpha state and not this.

Thankfully A10 Warthog delivered and even surpassed the hype (best flight sim of last decade)

yeah some parts like the Superweapons, anyone who's been following AC AH from day dot knows pretty much superweapons were gone and so were a few other things (sometimes superweapons on higher difficulty actually became more of a chore than fun a-la AC5's Arkbird and Scinfaxi aswell as Hrimfaxi.Or even Excalibur on AC0 was a nightmare on some higher difficulties and was an early level).

I mean Duke Nukem got a 3.5 and i enjoyed it for just being what it was, same goes for a lot of games this year unlike the past 2 years being brutally honest gamespot has been throwing curveballs like Infamous 2 and Forza 4 into the mix for being brutally honest to be what one could consider controversial.

Also one might say VanOrd might be evven more critical as he's just came off reviewing Dark Souls ( a notoriously hard game) in then going to AC AH aswell just a slight after thought i've been like that.Still if CoD MW3 gets a 9.0 in here im just essentially gonna facedesk on how they come to that conclusion in the fact its gonna do a Forza 4.

yeah im still getting it, a guy i know from work got his paws on it and says the only bits that will let you down are the helo bits (expected tbh) but says its still a fun game for what it is, and he's just came off AC6 since i gave him a loan of it so it makes me hopeful, i'll probably still enjoy it but to be honest its getting ripped to bits on here and compared to CoD but i can bet CoD's gonna get AAA on here at least be called one of teh bbest games of the year yet does little to actually impress except the case was filled with a cheque instead of a disk..

Gamespots been all over the place with reviews this year its a tad shocking i wouldnt be surprised if Batman,UC3,Skyrim,BF3 all got AA and somehow CoD manages a AAA come November.Being brutally serious this sites been all over the place and trying to be Edge like controversial for the sake of this board me thinks.

Haven't played but I honestly think 5.5 sounds unreasonably low.

Even if it's a rail shooter, the gameplay video looked pretty fun.

There's gotta be more to it than 5.5

game is currently a 78 on metacritic after 26 reviews. 20 of which are positive, 5 mixed (gamespots is the lowest of the mixed) & 1 negative.

Hopefully shopto.net will get my copy out to me tomorrow and i can try this for myself. for the people saying "er well the demo sucked", the demo was the tutorial stage.the demo for Ace Combat 6 wasn't much better. I wonder how many of those who tried the demo, used the default controller option LOL
