Activision planning a subscription for Black Ops..reveal on Sept 1st.

Seems that they are actually doing it, here is the story on it. Basically those who pay the extra $15 a month will get early access to map packs, exclusive maps, equipment and guns. They are saying its optional and that the basic online mode will be free of charge.

$15 a month?! I thought even Activision won't be greedy enough to pull something like that off. Personally Ihadbeenthinking $5 max.

So £10 (what it'll probably be for me in the UK) for timed map packs. Erm, doesn't my Gold subscription already guarantee early access? Wow Activision, that IS GREED. Maybe do it for PS3/PC versions (ideally for none obviously) but considering they've got a huge deal from MS, that's ridiculous!!!

This is great, as Activision will finally be put in its place by the gaming public. Actually, I don't know if I have enough faith in people to believe that.

I didn't think they would have the balls to do this. We're already paying for Xbox Live, the 60 dollar game...and now this? What has the world come to?

With the launch of Halo Reach and with BFBC2... BO is going to sell like crap compared to MW2 and Activision's decisions are not going to help it do any better.

This is going to be fun to watch.

If I'm not mistaken Activision only ever denied charging for access to multiplayer. A premium service offered on top of that could very well become a reality. Then they'll charge for multiplayer access once the adoption rate is high enough.

It boggles my mind that even though they just use the same formula over and over again they still manage to make each iteration worse than the previous :s.

Would be nice if you also read them. Your link confirms that Activision only ever denied pay-to-play models. That's not what this is about. This is about an optional premium service.

It's when I read stuff like this that I'm happy that online shooters aren't my thing..

But in all fairness, I doubt this is true.

If true I imagine it won't do well, but I'm not against the idea.

Maybe $1-$5 a month would be good for online shooters depending on the content they give as well as the features.
