Seems that they are actually doing it, here is the story on it. Basically those who pay the extra $15 a month will get early access to map packs, exclusive maps, equipment and guns. They are saying its optional and that the basic online mode will be free of charge.

http://callofdutyhq.multiplayernetwork.net/news/2318/

I'm not buying this game, not going to fall for the hype this time.

If this does become true, then at least it is optional. I would hate for it to be forced on us. I don't play the game enough to warrant paying that much money just to play the MP portion.

Exclusive content is bull****. This doesn't sound bad otherwise, but depriving non-subscribers is not the way to do a subscription model.

Also, this better be $5 and not $15.

$15 a month?! I thought even Activision won't be greedy enough to pull something like that off. Personally Ihadbeenthinking $5 max.

So £10 (what it'll probably be for me in the UK) for timed map packs. Erm, doesn't my Gold subscription already guarantee early access? Wow Activision, that IS GREED. Maybe do it for PS3/PC versions (ideally for none obviously) but considering they've got a huge deal from MS, that's ridiculous!!!

Eh, weapons won't automatically make you better at the game. Unless they're P90s that do double damage or something like that, you'll still be able to do well with any weapon if you know how to use it and how to counter other weapons.

Sounds a bit silly really, $15 is a lot unless they release about 5 times more content than they already have been.

I really hope that rumour isn't true, FPS's really shouldn't have monthly fees. Still, it might convince my friends to buy the Battlefield games instead.

Why? I hope its $100 so no one actually pays for it. The cheaper it is, the more people there will be running around with exclusive weapons. Hell, it could be $0.50 and I still wouldn't pay for it. Money isn't the issue, I simply won't support a subscription based form of play.

This is great, as Activision will finally be put in its place by the gaming public. Actually, I don't know if I have enough faith in people to believe that.

Anyone wanna take bets on Black Ops still using P2P even if this does happen?

Oh God! I'd love to see how many people would actually be willing to pay for this. TBH I think Activision would get alot more subscribers if they charged $2.50 a month, that way most people won't think of it as much.

I didn't think they would have the balls to do this. We're already paying for Xbox Live, the 60 dollar game...and now this? What has the world come to?

Wow they actually are doing it... crazy.

With the launch of Halo Reach and with BFBC2... BO is going to sell like crap compared to MW2 and Activision's decisions are not going to help it do any better.

This is going to be fun to watch.

The thing that annoys me is, that Activision obviously got paid a lot from MS to get all of the maps early. And they're now charging people to do the exact same, just through themselves...

No they don't, this seems more suited to a VIP code given with a new copy of the game. In fact, that'd be very good.

VIP code in a new copy? That's too kind of them. I mean they sold 20 million+ new copies of MW2. I don't think used copies is a worry for them :P

If I buy the game, which I currently don't plan on doing, I won't ever pay them to play online. These sorts of games attract the biggest d-bags in gaming... damned if I'm going to pay to play with the military shooter community. So as far as I'm concerned, I will only consider buying the game if the single-player campaign is outstanding.

If I'm not mistaken Activision only ever denied charging for access to multiplayer. A premium service offered on top of that could very well become a reality. Then they'll charge for multiplayer access once the adoption rate is high enough.

It boggles my mind that even though they just use the same formula over and over again they still manage to make each iteration worse than the previous :s.

also this has been debunked

Would be nice if you also read them. Your link confirms that Activision only ever denied pay-to-play models. That's not what this is about. This is about an optional premium service.

It's when I read stuff like this that I'm happy that online shooters aren't my thing..

But in all fairness, I doubt this is true.

If true I imagine it won't do well, but I'm not against the idea.

Maybe $1-$5 a month would be good for online shooters depending on the content they give as well as the features.

I'm pretty sure lemmings have a tendency to buy this game even though they're already being charged for online (Live) and it's a shooter! :D

Their parents (specifically the mommies) will buy the subscription for them anyways.

Dude, it's not just the parents man. Big brothers and big sisters tend to be victims as well. Last month my lil bro was begging for my credit card just to get the two $15 stimulus DLC for MW2 they released earlier.

It's a rumor, and a false one. Treyarch has confirmed numerous times that there will be no P2P subscription service for Black Ops.
