(After 2.40 FW) Is XBL $50 a year Better than PSN?

AFter the recent videos revealing the contents of Firmware 2.40 for the Playstation 3, including such things as; Trophies, Levels, In-game XMB, Custom Soundtracks, etc.....

What I find a little confusing is that this new firmware update has little to do with online at all. I don't understand the comparison.

If anything, the firmware update is catching up to XBL Silver.

How can you say XBL Silver is better when you can't play online with XBL Silver....I Don't get it. Maybe if you're talking about the periphery details of XBL Silver vs. the periphery parts of PSN you could have an argument (because the only basic difference is that you can play games online with XBL Gold and you can't with XBL Silver) But as a XBL Silver vs. PSN.....I don't think that argument can be made.

Unless you're playing on well-maintained dedicated servers. Then you can absolutely justify the price for something that difficult to build and maintain with a large player load.

Get real people. This is why we joke about Xbox Live. They make you pay for nothing....meanwhile, PSN makes you pay nothing for first party dedicated servers, which are built and maintained by Sony.

Not only is steam better, the whole PC online system is better. I like being able to choose where to download patches, demos, and mods, and not have to do everything from one source.

There is the rub. This is all a matter of one's perspective and value. That is why every single thread about this devolves into silliness. I think it is worth it as it is less than a dollar a week. A pure bargain for the amount of use I get out of it. Others don't. Alas, these threads continue.

Online gaming SHOULD be free, You buy their console, you buy the games, and yet you have to pay to play online? No thats just wrong.

PS3 online is free.

Wii online is free.

PC online is free.

Beat me to it. The only thing Live users really have over PSN now is that there games will always be online as long as M$ is running Xbox Live. It's really not that big of a deal to me because I move onto new games frequently as there are just so many games to play.
