You wish. Age of Conan's developers practically shot themselves in the foot with this game. The number one rule in creating a successful MMO franchise is to not limit your user base. MMO games, as their name suggest, are defined by the large communities that accompany them. By limiting their user base to the "mature and up" they have failed to appeal to a long term, sustainable demographic. Age of Conan will reach cult status for awhile, but Warhammer will practically rip any remaining cult following it has left from its cold, dead hands when it comes out. Age of Conan is going to inevitably fail with their business model.

I'll try it out, when it hits the 360. I can't see anything overtaking WoW until EQ III comes out.

How so? I mean it's usually people that are "mature and up" in terms of age that are comfortable with footing out extra money each month.

I'm still waiting for a multitude of reviews for this game, but one of my friends and I have been anxiously waiting for this game for a while. He gets back from the Navy this week, and we were looking forward to getting this game. We shall see.

WoW's success was solely based on its accessibility. Not because its a great MMO, but simply because it could run on every PC and was accessible to everyone. Thats what defines a success MMO. If you limit your user base in any way, shape or form you're just fishing for failure. Whether or not mature people are the ones that are buying these games has yet to be seen. I doubt you have any statistics to back that up. Limiting your user base, regardless of the game you're making, is a recipe for disaster.

Nope in fact I was just wondering how many of WoW's players are below "mature".

Maybe, there are a number of mature rating games that are hugely popular (GTA comes to mind).

GTA, and other games of their like, don't rely as heavily on the user base for longevity. Unfortunately for an MMO, if you limit the user base you risk longevity. You need to leave room for an expanding demographic, and accoutn for everyone who may want to get in on the sauce.

it's niche. i've heard good things from ppl playing it but no mmorpger thinks it'll kill wow.

not only is it M rated but also the content and setting is not appealing to most women mmorpgers.

Ah "longevity", that's a factor I didn't think of. True, that is one of the most important factors for an mmo.

MMO's don't need 1million+ people to be profitable, all they need to do is cover server and upkeep costs and you can cash in on the yearly expansions. I dont think the original EQ ever went above 1 million active subs and before WoW it was the wests big gun.You could hardly call it a game for everyone, it is hugely focused on the raiding side and with XP dept on death etc and was pretty much focused the hardcore PVE player.

You have to take into consideration the law of deminishing returns. The longer an MMO goes on, the more people will be burned out. The more people burned out, the smaller the user base. If you limit your prospective user base you will have deminishing new players. If the new player to leaving player ratio isn't large enough, your game dies.

for mmorpgs i find that the ones with the best communities thrive. this one sadly looks like it's mainly going to be hardcore pvp males. burn out is high in that group.

You guys really think an M rating will discourage kids and teens to not play the game rather than appeal to them like moths to a flame?

I'm sure it will keep many off. and it's a monthly fee so that keeps many kids off as well.

Warhammer is focusing much more on the PvP side of things from what ive heard, I havent checked in on AoC in a while but I though the PvP was sectioned off in its own zone and was more guild oriented.

Ok nothing can kill WoW, but honestly I need a new MMO to play (haven't played one in AGES). Will this be my summer MMORPG? Or should I just go back to playing GTAIV.tekmojo

I have been playing in the beta and all I have to say is that I am not really having any fun. The REAL contender to WoW is gonna be Guild Wars 2. That game is gonna be the sheeznit.

True, Warhammer and Age of Conan will disappear into the pile that failed. Especially Warhammer, I cant see the love for that, sure the universe is awesome, too bad thier art style and technical graphics show little enthusiasm, and the PvP and setup overall is a compelte WoW clone.

Guild Wars 1 wasn't a contender when it came out. Don't expect Guild Wars 2 to be, either.

People need to face the fact that no game will kill WoW. None. Zero. Sure, it may draw you in but in the long run, you don't matter in the face of 10 million other subscribers. The sooner people accept this, the sooner people will enjoy the other MMOs out there.

Also, Age of Conan will hardly draw in as many people due to one very specific reason: Women. Believe it or not, women make up a huge percent of MMO players and I don't think a game that is not too kind to the gender will go over too well with them.

I really wanted to play Age of Conan... But the Combat in that game just sucks. It looks so stiff and un-fun.

If they could just fix this I would probably give it a spin.

Everything we've seen at the lowest settings, so the technical speak is kinda shot there. Artistically is opinion and I've heard the same from quite a few. But the PvP a complete WoW clone....Jeez Meuk2k7....I can't tell if you're trying to get a rise out of the fanboys (AKA me) or what.

I doubt many people care about those recomendations for any game.. In all of my youth I haven't known anyone being unable too get a game no matter what the rating was..

Also, if there are less kids, then its a good thing, kids are the pest of the internet, especially the foreign ones that don't know any english.. Well except for insults..

Nope, I'm not trying to make anyone angry, I should of said Gameplay more than PvP, hell they even used the same default combat fonts, the movement, the attacks, the UI in general.

Its all near identical, when I first saw footage I thought it was some Modder playing WoW.

In this case its not the rating, but the heavy system requirements that will discourage them.

And besides, maturity is not always determined by age anyways. As much as I would like a mature MMO community. I think its for the better if as much as different audiences get attracted by the game. The bigger the userbase, the bigger the support for the game. Wich is a good think also.

So far I absolutely love Age of Conan. I haven't had this much fun since Diablo II.

Fair enough on that front. Seeing as the art style is so close I completely understand how it looks. Though the attacks themselves are different, if you're talking animation wise.

Age of Conan wont "kill" WoW because its audience is far to small.

That being said I believe it will be the MMO that all "hardcore" MMO fans are looking for to get away from WoW.

Depends, well to me at least, this expansion is the best theme'd one they could have possible had, no game will drag me away from this.

Warhammer is more RvR than PvP. yes AOC is zone and guild oriented. though they have pvp servers as well in which all zones are fair game.

I love GW1. I played WoW and I cannot believe it has the following it does. I am just amazed cause the game seemed so bland compared to GW. GW2 is gonna be great and it will sell like crazy. I don't think GW2 will kill anything, but I can tell you one thing for sure. I will play GW2 whilst I will never again pay for something that is worse than something that is free.

The WoW UI isn't unqie though. COH used similar controls before wow came out. also Mythic allowed UI mods before WoW came out also in DAOC.

as for PVP. like DAOC Warhammer is focused on RvR. a War between realms. Ironically enough there is no sense of war in warcraft. pvp in WoW is basically small groups of ppl playing minigames.

That being said I believe it will be the MMO that all "hardcore" MMO fans are looking for to get away from WoW.

Wasdie

Age of Conan won't even be able to compete with GW1 let alone WoW. AoC beta is so boring that to me it is even worse than WoW.

[QUOTE="tekmojo"]Ok nothing can kill WoW, but honestly I need a new MMO to play (haven't played one in AGES). Will this be my summer MMORPG? Or should I just go back to playing GTAIV.MadExponent

I have been playing in the beta and all I have to say is that I am not really having any fun. The REAL contender to WoW is gonna be Guild Wars 2. That game is gonna be the sheeznit.

Meh, I found no insentive to play guild Wars after the first few weeks.

Bland Characters

Click based movement ( Dire ).

lack of armour types and they barely did anything.

Retards everywhere ( typical on any game release )

instanced worlds made it reptetive.

Amongst other problems, the game lacked any depth, sure thatm ay be different now after what? 4 expansions, but the initial release was very bland compared to WoW's imo.

Nope, I'm not trying to make anyone angry, I should of said Gameplay more than PvP, hell they even used the same default combat fonts, the movement, the attacks, the UI in general.

Its all near identical, when I first saw footage I thought it was some Modder playing WoW.

Ontain

The WoW UI isn't unqie though. COH used similar controls before wow came out. also Mythic allowed UI mods before WoW came out also in DAOC.

as for PVP. like DAOC Warhammer is focused on RvR. a War between realms. Ironically enough there is no sense of war in warcraft. pvp in WoW is basically small groups of ppl playing minigames.

WoWs UI, gameplay, movement was the most revised, every MMO so far has copied it because its so good ( Vangaurd, AoC , Warhammer ) ... its a standard, as for mods? well.. big deal, it should of been natural to a PC game in the first place I suppose.

PvP I agree in WoW has lost its charm, unfortunatly the genre doesnt allow for fair "War in the World", besides from the footage I have seen Warhammer is jsut the same, small groups of people attacking eachother for a "minigame goal".

Age of Conan is going to inevitably fail with their business model.Vandalvideo

Wow is limited though IMO, it's limited to spoilt kids with too much money, and people who have jobs...

£2 a week is cheap for such long lasting entertainment, saying otherwise is foolish.

To be honest, I feel that Guild Wars is worst than WoW by a long run, encouraging the practise of boring dungeon crawling that felt uninspired just to get decent in the game's main focus, PvP. Doesn't help that you need every expansion to even compete via certain builds. Good luck having a Factions Assassin and attempting to compete with a BoA Sins build.

People have different views of different games. Don't expect everyone to agree, especially in the world of MMOs (Even though Guild Wars is not a MMO; It's lobby based).

Isn't that what Warhammer Online is encouraging to a certain extent? Also, lets face it, DaoC's PvP wasn't balanced nor always fun, especially with class imbalance, faction imbalance and buffbots ruling the scene.

People who argue for the DAoC approach to PvP (or RvR) seem to find it awesome to see massive amount of people practically zerging each other left and right all the time since MMOs is the only genre that can allow it. Personally, this fantasy in the end is not realistic since you can't control a mob. Developers realize that, hence the reason for "minigames" in the genre. DAoC has those "minigames", WoW has them and Warhammer Online has them.

you've seen very little then. in Warhammer one side is able to capture entire zones and when they capture enough key points they can take down the Capitol of the enemy. that type of think takes more than small groups. this is similar to DAOC where it was common to have hundreds of ppl on each side right relic raids. Beta players have already started testing this aspect of the game with very positive reviews.

as for the UI. as an mmorpger that's played numerous mmorpgs. I'll say it again, WoW's ui isn't original. it took elements from previous mmos as well. and new mmos will take from it. that's just the nature of things.

for movement. COH had that type of movement default before WoW came out. and we all know fps and TPS games have had those type of controls as well. Heck in DAOC everyone i knew had movement bound to some FPS like style.

No i don't think that's what War Online is encouraging. the objectives in pvp zones are part of the larger goal. It the enemy doesn't want to stop you then you can keep taking objectives an take the fight to their capitol. In WoW you play games that don't effect the larger world. someone crafting in Stormwind doesn't care if you team took some flags in Warsong. But a crafter in Warhammer will care if Chaos is about to get enough to sac the capitol. the sense of realm and war is there.

My point is that Warhammer Online still uses the instanced PvP battle model to a certain extent, much like WoW and DAoC before it.

Also, I'll believe it when I see it. As I stated many times, Mythic hasn't made me a believer in the past due to foolish decisions they made that ultimately hurt both their game and their player base.

DAOC pvp was not instanced unless you're talking about the lowbie battlegrounds but even then there was only one instance for each lvl range. and the major stuff in warhammer is not instanced either.

Of course I meant battlegrounds. :P

Also, lets not kid ourselves; Warhammer Online's instanced PvP will be just as important as world PvP, especially for the points needed to raid a city. World PvP will most likely be more focused on keeps control than anything. The only way this will change is if Mythic decides to drop instanced PvP all together, which they will have to if they want to appease the world PvPer who looks forward to the game. If not, the idea behind instanced PvP will be as useless as its DAoC counterpart.

Okie Dokie. I disagree with every one of your critiques. Actually the things you claim you didn't like are actually pretty much wrong. There are 10 primary classes that can be mixed with any other one as a secondary therefore the characters are VERY diverse. I don't use click based movement at all. You have a choice. You can mix it or use click based movement. I control GW with very similar controls to the way people play FPS's. There are roughly 60 different kinds of armor for each primary profession and each has different bonus' for each set. There may have been retards in the beginning, but the community is insane now. Instancing works well for this game. GW2 will not be instanced except for dungeons and missions. To give you an idea of the scale of GW I have played for about 6000 hours roughly since the game came out and I am still NOWHERE near beating all of the expansions. I would say I probably have about another 6000-10000 hours to go.
