All I hear about is how amazing next gen's graphics will be. What about Wii U?

Sure the Wii U will have ytrpretty decent graphics, but if rumors are true (such as Square Enix's comments on next gen graphics here), then the Wii U to me lost a lot of interest.

Amyone else concerned about the Wii U? Or am I just a farting shennanigan?

The Wii U is next gen's Wii. Meaning it will be underpowered compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles. I don't even consider the Wii U next gen. More like it is about time Nintendo caught up to current gen.

if the wii u is only on par or slightly better then this gen then yes the next ps/xbox will blow it away

video cards alone now have 2gb of ram

if u look at what kind of gaming pc you can get for 600 dollars and factor companies like sony always take a loss on hardware(plus their cost of parts will be lower then the avg consumer)
i could see a PS4/xbox720 coming in a step behind todays high end pc specs for 400 to 500 dollars in 2013

The link isn't working for me.

Anyways, The level of graphics on current consoles is good enough, at least as far as core graphics go. Polygon counts are as high as they need to be for believeable models, and lighting and effects are really impressive on the best looking games. We've hit that point, where most of the games coming out today look great, the only things that are lacking is resolution, AF and AA, things that clean up the image which just aren't high enough on current console games.

All I really want is 1080p native games next gen, and that'll be great. The main component of what makes games look as good or bad as they are these days is the visual style.

Frankly, if the new Zelda has PS3 graphics, i will be set and will look stunning, considering the amazign art they use

Also i will get WiiU when Zelda arrives in 3-4 years, so will be far cheaper by then and a amazing system to get with a next gen Zelda, so all is well in my book

Plus graphics are not everything, the problem with Wii was that had ancient hardware comparing to PS3 and very old graphics, now even if graphics get a lot better, PS3 kind of graphics are still amazing looking, so they wont look bad like Wii ones do now in any way, even if games in other systems do look a lot better

Many games on PS3/360 look amazing, so i dont see a problem with WiiU looking better than them, even if not by much

what about the wiiu? so far we only have rumour on the specs. it being R770 based tells us bupkis. we dont have any spec on the CPu and we dont know the ram. some devs are saying its only a little improvement over what we have now and others are saying its a big leap. the darksiders 2 devs who are certainly working on it have said its still mostly in the air. there is so much in the air regarding the next gen consoles at the mo that bashing something that essentially is not finalised is..well as you put it TC its farting shenannigans. im not saying the wiiu will be competative in horsepower (personally i dont think its going to be any huge leap over the current gens horsepower wise) but at the end of the day it seems even nintendo doesnt know that yet. so bashing something that essentially doesnt exist yet is pointless.

For me whats more important in the next generation of consoles is that ALL games run at 720p minimum and are ALL locked in at 60 fps.

Nintendo is not concerned in the slightest with keeping up with the graphics race. They have showed time and time again that they do not even need number crunching hardware to create games that look among the best anyone regardless of what system has to offer.

This of course completely conflicts with their renewed initiative to bring on significant third party companies to their platform. If they only have similar platforms to MS and Sony until Xbox 720 and PS4 come out then they are in a whole that is similar to Wii.

Can I seriously see your crystal ball.Nobody knows how strong the system is yet. All we know so far is that it's using 2008 PC hardware. It could be a low end variant of this hardware, a medium end variant of this hardware or the higher end variant of this hardware

Considering the size of the Wii U (yes it is quite big), and what the Wii U demos have shown us, which were extremely rushed made with early dev kits, I'm pretty sure the Wii U will be far more powerful than current consoles.

Also those were underclocked devkits.

The developers are just getting the next set of hardware. They should have it before August 1st.

Also I'm not really sure the next Sony or Microsoft console would be that much more powerful then the Wii U a Sony rep already said the PS4 will just be a small step up from the PS3.

You know that no game this gen looks as good as the Unreal 3 engine tech demo. As for GTA, it looks great, but next gen I'm am hoping for more than just a visual upgrade.

I will say it once again, PC is not in the next gen yet. If next gen graphics end up looking like the best looking PC exclusives now, I will be sorely diassapointed.

Well if the parts it's rumored to be built out of are true, it could run Crysis at max setting at 1080p. That's on par with my and other powerful PCs, but far ahead of what the current gen consoles can even dream of doing.

No, there is no game right now that looks on par with samartian right now, but it is a showcase of what is capable right now with PC hardware, and whether or not it is next gen depends on how powerful next gen actually is. If the Wii U is next gen, then the PC is easily next gen.

If the WiiU is more powerful than what's been shown so far it has substantially more power than the 360/PS3. Nintendo is trying to get the core gamer back, not isolate. Their true goal is to get both casual and core gamers to want their system because that covers the entire consumer base. Isolating core gamers causes them to lose potential revenue, they aren't stupid enough to completely throw them under the boat. They thought the Wii would be able to do this but realized that the lack of power led to weak 3rd party support, by making a more powerful console this gen they can expand their market. Then again I suppose I shouldn't expect a fair assessment of the WiiU from someone with a Halo avatar and sig...

Actually, you can get them from three to four gigs now.

These are not 3 or 4 gigs. They are 1,5 and 2 gigs for each GPU in the card. SLI/CFX mirrors data between the two GPUs in the card, so vrams of the GPUs will be equally loaded within the card, effectively making the total vram of the card 1,5/2GB and not 3/4GB as advertised.

The Samartian demo is to showcase what Epic wants next gen consoles to be capable of, but it was ran on current off the shelf PC hardware, and they didn't optimize the features much at the time of the demo, Epic already stated that the Samartian demo could be ran off of a single GTX 5 series card.

Right. I know. I am not arguing that PC hardware isn't next gen. You yourself just stated that PC's aren't in the next gen yet when it comes to software. The samartian demo is a prediction on what next gen consoles could be. It is a justified indicator on what might be coming next gen. And you also stated that no PC game can match the samartian demo. Thus stating that PC isn't in the next gen if we use Epic's predictions, which happens to be the only indicator we have right now to make a valid prediction.

I completely agree with this.

While nothing is set in stone, if Wii U can run Crysis at 1080p and Very High, then that is just about all we can expect out of "next gen" as the hardware will all be comparable to hardware to what is currently on shelf.

People didn't seem to complain about the PS2 having the worst graphics last gen. Funny how a Nintendo console gets a totally different treatment, despite the strong likelihood that it will be very similar in terms of market penetration and developer support.

I'm not so concerned about how Wii U graphics will compete with the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles as I'll probably only get multiplats on the non-Nintendo consoles, when I get a Wii U I'll just have it for Nintendo franchise games only and whatever worthy exclusives exist. After all, that controller, I just can't imagine playing games like COD or GTA with that, I mean it looks doable, but not very ergonomic or conventional in any way, but I can stomach it for the Nintendo exclusives, not like I have a choice if I want to play them.

So PC isn't a gen ahead but you'll be disappointed when next gen consoles don't match current PC.

I don't see games with shogun2 scale on console.

This is what I said to someone else above and I stick by that:

"Right. Thus stating that PC isn't in the next gen if we use Epic's predictions, which happens to be the only indicator we have right now to make a valid prediction."

I am using the Next gen unreal engine as an estimation of what next gen might be like. If that is the case for next gen, thes yes, console games will run games with the scale of shogun 2. You can say what you want but at least I am making a valid prediction with what is presented by the next gen unreal engine. I am not just hypothesizing randomly.

I'm confused, I thought technical graphics don't matter to Nintendo fans and it's all about the art style and interpretation? Wouldn't the extra power be wasted?

Have you seen the Zelda HD tech demo? Was that not beautiful. The art styles have always been great, with comparable hardware, they (IMO) destroy the competetion. Also, think what the power could do for games like Metroid Prime? No longer laggy doors! And at the end of the day, I don't doubt that a Mario title on the Wii U will not even be HD, but instead use the power for other things like more enemies, objects in current area/ on screen.

It will probably be 35-40% better than the 360 and PS3 graphically speaking. It wont have true next gen visuals if thats what you are looking for.

yea whoever said that needs to get hit in the face. It took a farm of top end computers many many days to render toy story 3, avatar, etc.

So my question to you is, was the samartian tech demo shown from a crystal ball? I'm not going to judge the abilities of next gen consoles until I see spec's to go along with the price tag. But, if it takes a decent PC to play iCEnhance, I have my doubt's next gen consoles will play current gen PC games.

Sure the Wii U will have ytrpretty decent graphics, but if rumors are true (such as Square Enix's comments on next gen graphics here), then the Wii U to me lost a lot of interest.

Amyone else concerned about the Wii U? Or am I just a farting shennanigan?

Squall18

I'm not concerned at all. Is it really going to kill people if Wii U doesn't produce graphics that look like Avatar? If you want to play something that looks terrible, pull out an N64 or PSX. Graphics in our current next gen systems(PS3/Xbox 360) are pretty sufficient. Of course, there is room to expand with draw distance and framerate.

The lowest R700 video card has roughly 4x more gpu horsepower than a 360, say what? Not only that but it is in a console.

The Wii U is next gen's Wii. Meaning it will be underpowered compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles. I don't even consider the Wii U next gen. More like it is about time Nintendo caught up to current gen.

You, as well as everyone else saying those words really bother me. Don't straight up say " Wii U is next gen's Wii. Meaning it will be underpowered compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles " Just because you THINK that's going to happen. Give me your crystal ball, you are restricted of its use. I remember somewhere, SONY stating that the next PS will only be a small step up from the PS3, so If the WII-U outperforms the PS3, and the PS4 is just a step above, What does that mean ? It means the WII-U may still be stronger than sony's system. I can see microsoft going the " Balls to the walls powerhouse " with the nextbox, and i think it will fail because of it. Now, None of this is fact, Just my thoughts.

It will probably be like last time with the Wii. The Nintendo fans will say they don't care about graphics and if it's just a little bit better than the PS3 (or at that time the Xbox) than it will be amazing. These are the same people who pee their pants over seeing a Zelda tech demo that looks like a 360 game. This gen graphics will look like crap next-gen, just like last gen graphics look like crap now. The WiiU tablet better push a lot of units or it will be in situation that could resemble the GC. The Wii already misses out on all the big games because of it's lack of power and it has a huge lead over the other 2 consoles. Imagine how bad it will be if it had the smallest user base. It's not just the graphics, it's also level size, AI, phisics etc... By the looks of things, the WiiU will more than likely not be able to run next-gen games and there for be ignored by the big devs. I guess we will have to wait and see if granpa and granma like tablet gaming.
