I have the PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii in the same room.

But guess what I never use any of them for there Media functions.

Because I also have a PC and a Laptop in the same room.

They perform any multimedia function better then all on the PS3 or Xbox 360.

Not really neccesary at all, but it's nice to have. For now I only have a Wii, and it would be nice if I could plug my MP3 player into it and listen to music, or watch a DVD. Having everything on one device (Music, movies and games) is handy.

My PS3 can ...O_o but I don't care for Hollywood 2 hour mega Rehashes in HD.

Independent Movies from Channel IFC FTW.

*Sigh, edit* Thought you were referring to the media functionality of consoles. Anyways, I'd say the setup in your room is a bit...overkill. :P

Ever think you don´t speak for everyone? Maybe you don´t use it but a lot of people do, my ps2 is still the most used dvd player in my home, well until I got the ps3 that is.

Sorry. I don't have a  PC in my room or a laptop at all. I don't know how the PS3 works, but I love hooking up my PSP, selecting my music in the dashboard while playing my game and listening to what I want to. I miss it badly for the Wii. I also dont have a DVD player in my room....it would crowd it up having a Gamcube, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox 360. But lucky for me the Xbox and the 360 both play DVD`s...unlike the Wii...which is really sad. Only thing I use on the Wii is the Photo Channel, and that is rarely. The software on my PC is better, but like I said, its not in my room.

PC and gaming consoles in the same room? Not for me, I've got separate rooms for my home office and living room. I'll take web browsing and HD movies on my console thank you very much.

As for mobile, well, I love having a gaming machine, MP3 player, picture viewer, and video capabilities all from one device. Like I want to carry around a handheld, MP3 player, and my digital camera all the time.

The media functions of each console are not required for their primary gaming function.

However, in an ever competative, how do you make your product distinct?

We are talking about companies tryin to make their product an attractive alternative to it's rivals product, so they diversify their product to make it more attractive to a wider range of consumers.

Personally, Blu-ray player, HD movies, HDD, online, and Wi-fi is just as important as the games itself. I don't have an entertainment system just to play games.

No.  It's a ridiculous dream of console manufacturers to sell you an all-in-one entertainment center.  The idea has never really floated very well.  People want game systems to play games, (HD)DVD/Blu-ray/whatever players to play movies, actual stereo systems to play music, PCs to perform PC functions, etc.  When you try to jam them all into one console, you lose funtionality.  When a piece of electronic equipment focuses on one job, it usually performs it better than one pieced together in Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory.  Also, if you're doing one thing (like, say, playing a game) on your "multimedia center" you lose the ability to use it's other functions at the same time.  If you have a family, one "multimedia center" just doesn't work.  No one in their right mind will buy four, or more, "multimedia centers" either (unless, they're filthy rich).  Average families will usually buy one or two game systems, a PC or two, a few movie players and one really good stereo.  That is, if the family is lucky enough to have to the money to buy all that.  If money is no object, they'll most certainly buy specialized equipment.  Poor families can forget about a $400+ game system...errr, sorry..."multimedia center".  Besides, PCs perform all functions better than consoles - with the exception of playing Blu-ray.  If Blu-ray does become the next standard format, replacing DVDs, I'm sure PCs will be able to play them in the future as well.

That's pretty much it, except in order for it to be effective it has to be desired by a large amount of people, be a unique function, and be a quality product at an affordable price.
And I believe both the 360 and PS3 have failed at that.

Of coarse it's not "necessary" but it's nice to be able to listen to my music on my surround sound system through my PS3 or 360 instead of using my crappy laptop's speakers. The PS3's blu-ray player lets me get the most out of my HDTV.
