God, can we not get started on FF8's story? On the other hand, most people seem to agree that, series wise, IV, VI, VII and IX would round out the top four, in some order.
I have played all FF games except 1-4. FF13 is by far the best ive played, im about 50 hours in. Voice acting and graphics make the game so much more imersive than past FF games. People complain about linear, what FF isnt linear most of the game?

FF8's story makes sense for a while and the ending kind of makes sense, but I never really got the whole "TIME KOMPRESSION!!!" thing. It's like, "Um,,,, why?" and the response is, "TIME KOMPRESSION!!!" Never played the original six, personally. I must rectify that someday.
i like FF13 a lot, but the only other FF games i played were 7, 8, and some of part 10. i like how the battles kinda flow, instead of 1 character do one move, then the next character will do a move.

I like the fact that it tells a more focused story. It is no more linear than FFX and I feel it has better characters and has a better flowing story. I'd say top three for me, to be honest I went in expecting to be a bit disappointed but so far I have enjoyed every minute of the game.
well out of 13 games its definetely near the top, i would say 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 13 are the best ones, i think people just dont like to play as a girl and its not really that linear, just the map makes it seem that way, big deal if you dont have to go back to town 5 times cause u forgot to do something

I've played every FF from V to XIII (except XI). I'd probably rank it like this: (Top four are my favorite RPGs of all time) 1. FFIX 2. FFVII 3. FFX 4. FFVI 5. FFXIII 6. FFVIII (didn't like the gameplay) 7. FFV 8. FFXII
Its not the worst for sure as the battle system in MY OPINION is the best of the series if not one of the best.
What kills some of the joy for me is the music and just the whole feel of it. Some people may not like towns for example but its one of the tinest things that i like in a game is when its not constant constant world vs me feel.
To me its not on final fantasy 9's level. their characters although cool rank nowhere near vivi, aurron, cloud or even cid in my mind
The worst in the main series, other than II Reason why...instead of improving on the direction that FFXII tried to take the series, it regressed back into the extreme linearity. The story is very cliched and so are the characters. They put a new twist on the same old story. The writing is poor as well. FFVI will never be surpassed by SquareEnix.
It's hard for me to rank the FF series, because each one has it's ups and downs. FFXII had pretty great gameplay in it's own right. It managed to develop a massive world to explore, tons of sidequests to do, but the common battles were mindless 3 second affairs that generally consisted of going to an enemy and selecting "attack" to have it topple over in 3 seconds. And the story was terrible. FFXIII is a great game, but it's story isn't as good as other games like VIII or X and the map design is constricted to the point where I'm not sure if the game shouldn't be marked down on it anymore.
So I'll just give up on trying to be objective for now and post what I like:
1. FFVIII
2. FFX
3. FFVII
4. FFXIII
5. FFVI
... Maybe. I could switch VII with X or maybe even VI with IX. I have a hard time judging what I like more.

Sort of. But if you have a problem with constricted map design, I wouldn't suggest FFXIII because there's no reason for you to sit through 25 hours of a game just to get to a less constricted portion.

somewhere in the middle, the combat system is awesome i honestly love getting into battles, the reason its so linear, or at least i heard on ff13.net, is due to the game being originally developed for ps2 until they scrapped it because they were running out of time and built a new engine (the crystal one) to then go on and develop for the ps3 and eventually the 360. at chapter 11 the game opens up huge though imo. loved the story loved the combat, great game so im going with somewhere in the middle.
Why do so many people dislike XII? I've only played X, X-2, and XII (I know I'm deprived, so what) and I'd have to say that of them, XII has hands-down the BEST combat system of those games. Story wise, it didn't even come close to X, but i really liked the macro system in XII. I am just hard-pressed to play anything pre-PS2 though. Playing the original MGS back in '07 was hard enough. I really do want to play VII, and IX (since so many people like it), and maybe even the first few... but man. the new games have spoiled me. My childhood was riddled with mario games, and oldschool NES titles. The only RPG i ever even really seen played before i came into age (16 or so) was Mario RPG, and maybe Zelda, if that counts as an RPG... My first real console that I had any sort of actual attachment to was my PS2, and even then I never really bought too many games for it. and holy crap am I WAY off topic or what.. anyway. Yeah. Stop hating on FFXII. :P

Well yeah, if that's all you've played, XII will easily be the best. X and X-2 are in the bottom 3 FFs (IMO). Don't be so scared to give the early FFs a try. VI (one of the best) may have been on the SNES, but the platform didn't really hurt the graphics very much due to the art-style of the old 8 and 16 bit generation RPGs. Try picking up a copy of FF Chronicles (V and VI) on PS1 (playable on any ps1, ps2, or ps3), or pick up one of the ports for PSP or DS or something.
Tactics > VI > I > XI > VII > IV > IX > XII > XIII > VIII > V > III > X > II > X-2
Undecided. I've enjoyed all the Final Fantasy games I've played, with the exception of the online game. That's good enough for me; don't really feel the need to rank them in order from favorite to least favorite. It would simply be too difficult for me. =/
Somewhere in the middle, FFXIII really needed more places post game... sorry but 80% of places you visit are one time only and no mini game or something of the sort really doesn't help either... yes the battle system is great, the story is good too (it's really when character dev. comes that it shines the most), but no memorable music excpect for the battle theme there are a few things that lack in this game that are usually present... (classical victory fanfare?)
