Don't be a child and enlarge your horizon instead of following the crowd, Final Fantasy is a extremely poor example of what the height of JRPGs are, regardless of what the journalists might tell you.

The best in that series (FF6,7,8,9) are infinitely inferior (so inferior it's not even funny) to the best the genre has to offer (Chrono Trigger, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Xenogears, Vagrant Story).

And games, and movies, and comic books. What people like yourself don't understand yet, is that certain types/genres have different emphasis. Adventure games for example have strong focus on a story, wile arcade shooters on twitch gameplay with a 0% focus on story.

I don,t like them either, I think oblivion is the only one I finished. There is just something about them that I can't get into. I brought the witcher cause I heard great things about it and about 2 hours into it I call it quits. It's not an horrible game but I just find it boring.

There are lots of people that don't like WRPGs, I don't like them in general (though there are rare exceptions, i.e. almost anything made by Bioware), but I prefer JRPGs. However, note that this is a mostly western site, it's not unusual that there are more people that like WRPGs here.

I suggest you play the games Whiteblade999 recommended, and to that i'll ad:

  • Fallout 2 (with the restoration mod)
  • Temple of Elemental Evil (the greatest representation of DnD on the PC, and one of the best games ever made)
  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (easily one of the best RPGs ever made)

This gen? They're kind of disappointing. As are Japanese role-playing games.

OT: Can anyone recommend me a good RPG (Western or Japanese, I really don't care) to play? I only have $30 to spend and I don't like Oblivion (on consoles at least, never bought it when I got my PC because I hated the console version so much. Maybe mods would make it playable) so don't recommend that.

The reason why you liked ME 2 is probably because it's more of a shooter than anything else, WRPG are not made for the impatient and trigger happy, they are not suppoused to play as shooters or hack'n slash games otherwise they wouldn't be RPGs, you're suppoused to somewhat hit or miss because of your stats/enemy stats of course, otherwise you might as well not have any stats.

Not everyone is going to like every genre. I really enjoyed certain western rpgs. Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment are still 2 of the best games I have ever played and may be the 2 best rpgs ever made.

It may be ignorant for me to say, but i tend to agree with ^^ for the most part.

With that said, I would not want JRPG's to die, but I would like to see more JRPG's go the way of Demon's/Dark Souls. Truely amazing piece of JRPG work right there.

You could try Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition or Tales of Vesperia if you have a 360. Lost Odyssey is also a good jrpg from this gen but again is only on the 360.

That was another one I liked. Dragon Age was okay as well. I think I mainly do have a problem with Bethseda games, the story doesn't seem to make sense, they expect you to be a master at the game even though you've only played it for the first time. When you don't show me what quest advances the main story, that really can get annoying from time to time. Yes I'm talking to you Morrowind and Oblivion.

It was really obvious what the main quest was in Oblivion, it's just a horrible quest line.

Mass Effect 2 was the only one I liked...Morrowind was an absolute terrible game....I created my character and I had no idea what to do next...They just throw you into the world without a clue of what to do and say have fun. Not to mention there was no fast travel and you had to walk EVERYWHERE. It was such a pain...In Fallout 3 it felt like it was impossible to aim without using V.A.T.S. I'm aiming straight at this guy and he seems to dodge every bullet like he's freakin Neo. And why almost every Western RPG be Medevil Fantasy based or Futuristic Sci-Fi based? It seems like they never come out of these two categories. I'd like to see some diffrent variety.I miss the old days of RPG's on the PS2...there were so many good ones....Now there's hardly any memorable ones on 360/PS3. I know I can't be the only one who likes these Western made RPG's....anyone else share my opinion?

Ikouze

I think you may be in the same boat as me. You don't hate WRPGs, just Bethesda RPGs (Eldar scrolls &Fallout)

I hate they way Bethesda does RPGs, they just come off as borring

You should try other WRPGs like Dragon Age & Kotor (old now, but still great)

Also, if you have a gaming rig, I've heard nothing but love for Witcher 2

This is an easy one to answer, TC. No, you are not alone. Some people don't enjoy certain game types. I don't enjoy fighting games, for instance. Others hate racing sims.

Agreed 100% with the topic. I love the Mass Effect series, but when my cousin let me borrow Oblivion I thought it was so boring. It was his favorite game ever so he shouted all these praises upon it. I'm sure it's a great game, but the world was just so big. I had no idea where to go, what to do, and everything felt to slow and boring. As much as people like Fallout 3, I refuse to buy it because I know I'll just be wasting my money. And I'm one of the few here who wants no part of Skyrim. I'm not saying WRPG's are bad, they just aren't for me.

Final Fantasy all the way 8)

TailBlood

Okay so you didn't like oblivion. What else have you played?

Uh none really, I always thought that Bethesda was the king of WRPG's, so if I didn't like their games, I wouldn't like anyone else's either.

I think that BioWare is the king of WRPGs, if anyone is. But this is not some collective hive mind genre, every developer's take is different. Does your supposition really seem logical or likely, when you think about it?

I dislike every Western RPG Ive seen and played except for Oblivion and Skyrim. I mainly hate the idea of choosing your own path as that means a less focused story. Developers need control of your choices so the story can be good.

USBxDVD

Bioware shows that you don't need to control the choices to make the story good.

Overall: Tabletop>WRPGs>JRPGs.
This Gen: JRPGs>WRPGs.

Bioware and Bethesda have been consistantly terrible this generation churning out half baked, broken games such as Oblivion and Fallout 3 or repetitive chores such as Dragon Age Origins. However, I with that said, WRPGs are hardly dead. There are some excellent ones out there however such as Eschalon books, Fallout New Vegas, Drakensang: The River of Time, Kings Bounty, Depths of Peril, The Witcher, Mount and Blade and Avernum 2+3. Age of Decadence might join this list soon as well.

JRPGs, well I used to hate them this generation, until I decided to dig deep for them, and I found a whole lot of gems.

And,unlike other type of RPG´s,you actually affect events in the world on many WRPG´s.

Arach666

There are JRPGs that let you influence the events in the world. One that comes on the top of my mind does it at Witcher 2 levels.

You would've known where to go if you payed attention to anything that happened as you were creating your character. Specifically the part where the guy TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHERE TO GO AND WHO TO TALK TO.
