You mean the gen that just started?

Can't fathom the pointlessness of this thread...
And your talking about hardware specifically as well? this is the first gen you have had where the ammount of RAM is actually decent enough to be tolerated. you now have "play as you download" and alot more useful gaming additions which have been aavailable to pc gamers for a long time (E.g streaming) ...
How is this any less interesting than PS1 to PS2? just dvd instead of cd ... talk about boring. Xbox to X360? that wasn't SUCH a big jump either, just hardware and further improved interface.
what the hell are you expecting? they are incremental machines.
I don't see this the 8th generation being any different than the 7th, other than in visuals. The games industry is becoming like the film industry...it doesn't seem like there are any new ideas.
We'll see new Fallouts, Bioshocks, GTAs, Halos, Elder Scrolls, Marios, Uncharted, God of War, and Zeldas; but I don't see the formulas changing much. Look at the game most hyped so far for this generation: Titanfall. It's doesn't look materially different than any other first-person shooter we saw last generation.
@lostrib: mostly from a hardware standpoint. These systems are far too similar to pc hardware. They use x86 architecture. And that's extremely easy to develop for. Meaning these game consoles are already being tapped out. They struggled to get COD ghosts to run at 1080p 60fps. And COD isn't a very demanding game. So I'm concerned about the future of these consoles. Meaning that games will reach a point where they can't look any better.
1) Hardware doesn't mean dick. Never has, never will. Its just a means to an end. What do you think a console needs crazy proprietary hardware in order to have good games on it? If that's the case then why are games like dishonored good games on the PC and PS3? If hardware mattered wouldn't it be awesome on PS3 but suck on the PC? If using hardware like a PC on a console youre saying it would impossible to make a good game on it because game developers somehow will not be able to write good dialogue, have good gameplay, have interesting characters and good music on PC-like hardware?
2) Already tapped out? In case you haven't noticed every console ever has been "tapped out" right from the get go because they are static pieces of hardware, not to mention it has never stopped them from being great despite the fact PC hardware has always been miles ahead of them. In comparison every console that has ever launched has been drastically behind whats going on in the PC market at the time, but they still do great anyway.
3) Cant look better? Yeah people said that about the super Nintendo when it came out. Besides good graphics do not equal good game.
Plus you forget the fact these things have only been out a few months. No console has ever hit its peak after 2 or 3 months. What do you have rocks in your head that you think a console will launch and magically become this awesome platform with seasoned games on it a week after it launches? Consoles are about the long race, not a sprint. Maybe when you get older youll start being more realistic.
@seanmcloughlin: Hardware has limits. And the hardware in the xbox one and ps4 is that of a mid range gaming PC so games can only look so good before the framerate drops to 10.... Clearly you have no understanding of PC's hardware specs, and limitations...
@MBirdy88: I expected the console I spend 500 fucking dollars on to impress me. Excuuuuuuuse meeeeee! No wait 700 dollars counting games and controllers. And in its current state It can't do jack shit that the 360 can't do for half the price!!!

And what did your 360 do on release months that your Xbox 1 didnt? play Perfect Fail Zero and Kameo?
What did the PS3 do that the PS2 couldn't? wait 18 months for a good game... play expensive Blu Rays?
What the hell is your point?
Also I find the comparison of PC hardware a joke. PC Games still have to be designed with many configurations, and do not have the luxury of "to the metal".... you think ATI ... the lesser supported Graphics card companies mantle will magically change all of that?
Not many PC Games that look as good as Killzone Shadowfall.... a launch title. last generation gears of war BEAT every pc game on "mid-range weak hardware with only 3 low clocked cpu cores" BLAH BLAH BLAH.
point is, your an early adopter... saying a generation... that is .... 2 months old (minus nintendo's enigma) underwhelming.
Every gen starts out slow, but I've been far less hyped about this gen than the last. PS4 has nothing I'm interested in, and Ryse turned out to be a bust on the Xbox One. Wii U barely gets 3rd party games, but it has the exclusives I want. This gen can only improve as we edge into it.
@MBirdy88: Once again... The 360 did something consoles before it could not do.... It brought full HD gaming and perfected xbox live to the table. ITS CALLED INNOVATION. Doing something that has not been done before. The NES. the Super Nintendo. The N64. The original Playstation. The original Xbox. Those are innovative consoles. What this gen is. Is not innovative. Its last gen PC hardware. Get a grip. Hell the ps3 is more innovative than the ps4 at least it brought blu ray to the table. Innovation is what has kept consoles interesting. Microsoft Sony and Nintendo have departed from that. Well Nintendo really hasn't. At least the Wii U does something interesting. If we mirror PC's with our consoles the console market will be dead. Odds are this gen is the very last console gen anyways. Cloud gaming is going to come in and ruin it all. And that's sad. Cause I want these consoles to succeed. I'm just disappointed with what I've seen SO FAR!
The only thing that is disappointing is the amount of games available for x1 and Ps4, but it's very early for them. I should have 3 more great games to play on my PS4 in the next few months.

right, so bringing streaming to consoles, alot more features, in 6 months time Playstation Now, ect isn't innovation? ITS EXACTLY THE SAME.
not that blu-rays did anything for gaming over Xbox360, you friggin hypocrit.
"Perfected XBOX LIVE..." it essentially did the same thing but better. improved multiplayer is innovation? achievements? there are pleanty of additions to the 3 machines this generation that were not on the last. you are talking royally out of your ass.
What did that "amazing xbox live" do for you 2 months into its life? oh... you played PDZ and Kameo ... got some achievements.... sounds boring, sounds underwhelming, I guess that gen sucked because it was just an improvement in technology over the last.
wtf am I reading?
I guess upgrading my PC is boring too.... since nothing really changes.
@seanmcloughlin: How is it bulshit? HOW? It's not bulshit its TRUTH.
What you're implying is the visuals won't get any better from here on out because the systems are "tapped out". That's why it's bullshit
They will develop new ways of doing things in years to come that will make games today look like total shit. It happens every single gen and I don't know why you think this one would be different.
Yep. The hardware may be a lot weaker compared to most new gen beginnings, but it's not like they cant do new things as time goes on.
I feel video game consoles have always been lackluster in general, until a couple of years down the road. However, I can see there being a decent amount of video games I want by March for the PlayStation 4, but I will still probably have to wait because it will be a while before I feel okay with purchasing a PlayStation 4 and I do not want to purchase any video games I want at launch price and I refuse to purchase video games used, no matter what. The only video game I would want at the moment, that is almost available for purchase and I would not mind buying now is Basement Crawl; but many people misinterpreted what type of video game it is and are judging it as a horrible video game, even though I have seen some high quality images of it and it looks promising.
If anything, I feel this generation started out better than last generation.

Surely a dev who is releasing a game on 6 platforms was able to fully optimize the game for each of those platforms.
The X1 sucks. Takes a long time to install games vs PS4 3mins or less, takes a long time to download 1 game while PS4 downloads several faster. PS4 does 1080P & X1 does 720P. PSN gives lots of free games throughout the year & Xlive barely gives you anything.
I don't agree that the Xbox One does less than the 360, but even if you do believe that, it just started. It takes time to add features and they will continue to add features as time goes along.
...This gen is underwhelming because there isn't a big leap from the last generation
Look back to the beginning of last gen, particularly take a look at a game called Gun on the 360. This looked just awful and was worse than games on the previous xb or ps2 but look how things progressed from there, the games will come that will admirably show the improvements on last gen.
Wow another young-en who doesn't remember things,
the xbox 360 was never what it is now in the first place, thats how consoles work these days, we get the basic's of what there capable of and over time they grow and grow :S it's coming to the end of jan, it's only been 2months what else was you expecting.
