Amazon to buy Xbox from MS?[Rumour]. Would this be good or bad?

This would be great news if true. Amazon is a much better company than MS IMO. I'd be willing to buy a console from them if they included Amazon Prime with the whole package. If Amazon were in charge of Xbox I *might* consider buying one, depending on what direction they try taking it.

This is just proof that Microsoft can't commit to anything that's not an instant success, which is why the gaming industry would be better without them.

The PS3 was a major flop for the first few years, but SONY didn't try to dink their fans by canning the PS3 and releasing the PS4 2-3 years later. They stuck with the PS3, improved the SDK, started releasing the best exclusives on consoles and even evened out in sales with their closest competitor.

For most of the PS1 to the PS3 generation, console makers took a loss on profit in order to built marketshare. Profits would pursue after 3-5 years after the hardware was released. This was beneficial to the consumers, console manufacturer and 3rd party devs. Consumers were able to get any console they liked at a price below the total sum of its parts. Console manufacturers would be able to build up marketshare and make their bread and butter through royalties. 3rd party devs would have a wider audience by releasing games on those consoles.

I don't deny that SONY likes money, but they also care about their fans, which Microsoft doesn't. You wanna know why the 360's exclusive lineup was trash? Because Microsoft was making a killing with the 360 and they saw no need to invest their money in games. If you take a look back at the PS1 and PS2 days, SONY never slacked when it came to exclusive 1st party line-up despite making billions every year and having the largest marketshare. My point: SONY is greedy, but they're consumer friendly. Microsoft isn't.

What Microsoft wants is to be able to sell us weaksauce parts for a huge profit margin on day 1 and then charge us $120/year for Xbox LIVE Gold. They also only want to have Halo, Gears and Forza as their 1st party exclusives and never have to invest in new IPs. They are a cancer on the gaming industry and they should leave.

Maybe in other fields but when it came to xbox they were the company that spent billions for several years just to play the long game. They only started making money the later half of 360 and especially the original xbox was a huge money sink. If after 12 years the division still doesn't make money I wouldn't blame them.

It's also important to note Microsoft hasn't made any money on the Xbox brand. In fact, they've lost over a billion dollars on the original Xbox and the Xbox 360.

Obviously this is made up but lets for a second believe it was true. What would Amazon gain from buying the Xbox brand, all the tablets they have are incompatible due to android os. They risk major publishers like Sony pulling away from them as they would now be a competitor. In reality Amazon are a retailer looking to spread into the digital market and offer online services like music, video, books and gaming on platforms they build based on existing patents and ip's other own, ie android forked. why would they increase their cost and overheads by having to develop there own games, deal with publishers or publish themselves, again at further cost, marketing costs etc.. more likely that they strike a partnership with Microsoft to offer a service on Xbox and surface products.

Another question would be, would Amazon buy Sony for $1 and take on the debt to get their hands on Sonys entertainment music and video back catalogue to complement the lovefilm service they run in uk and prime video in USA. Food for thought.

Probably just a crazy rumor if true, but that would be really, really good news. Microsoft has run their console business in a decidedly anti-consumer, pro-advertiser fashion.

What you're saying makes no sense... if microsoft didn't put the effort into the xbox brand then the value of the brand would go to shit and they'd have no hope in selling it... You don't just stop all business in a department even if you are thinking about selling it. Investors have been on microsofts ass for a long time now.. I predict it gets sold in the next 2 years.

Why would lems melt down? Their Xbox Ones would be a whole lot better under a consumer friendly company like Amazon than they are under Microsoft.

I feel like this is the most plausible company to buy Xbox and Bing if Microsoft decides they want to sell it off (since they are all already in Seattle and Amazon is trying to move more into the consumer electronics industry). The thing is that they won't. Even if Microsoft wanted to sell, Amazon doesn't make any money, and only has 12 billion in cash.

They lost $5 billion with the original XBox, but have made most of that money back with the XBox 360 and XBox Live. The 360 has been profitting for over 5 years now. Sony lost like $8 billion with the PS3, which completely nullified any profits they made with the PS1 and PS2. They are also still in the RED. They just lost another $1.1 billion in 2013. Sony is hurting way more then Microsoft, which is why The XBox One has a better chance of sticking around a lot longer. Both the PS4 and XB1 set record launch sales. There current sales are ahead of every previous launched game console that has every been released. I don't think either is going anywhere anytime soon.

Yeah but digital console games have no direct competition. On pc you got steam, amazon, gog, Gamfly among others. On xbox theres only one place to buy digital games.

No they didn't the only thing MS did was some how convince everyone to pay for online gaming even tho it was free everywhere else.

They don't have to buy the whole package, nor does Microsoft need to sell the entire division to one buyer.

Amazon could just buy the name/branding for probably $1 million since the Xbox brand is pretty much dead. They can sell the kinect to other tech companies and sell Halo to SONY so that Naughty Dog can make a proper Halo game, since MS has no good 1st party studio.

I was actually thinking that Google would buy Xbox from MS, but Amazon could happen too.

However, Google could counter buy offering to buy Playstation from Sony.

PlayStation branding is pretty much back to where it was during the PS1 and PS2 days. The LTD sales number will be at 120-150 mill AND it'll have the $50/year PS Plus fee. SONY will probably make more with the PS4 than they ever did with the PS1 and PS2.

It would cost tens of billions just to buy the brand right now. The Xbox brand is kinda worthless now. Back to where it was in the original xbox days, except Halo is a mediocre clown copy of CoD.

It would probably be better for google to come up with their own branding. Something with "nexus" sounds pretty good.

How is it a mess? It has great games to play, a great service in Live and more options than the PS4. How exactly is it a mess? Is it because YOU don't like Kinect? Is it because YOU don't think it's worth $500? It's sales are great even if it doesn't sell as much as the PS4. So explain how it's a mess.
