When the games developer, Frictional Games, announced the sequel Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, fans were concerned after rumours flew around that the game would be less scary. One Redditor, G00SEtav emailed the devs with a plea to not let this happen.

This was their response:

"Dear Gustav,

One should not pay too much attention to rumors .

If it would have been a less scary Amnesia it would have been called "Amnesia: A trip to rainbowland" or perhaps "Amnesia: A machine for cookie baking". Our dear collaborators, Chinese Room, has gone to great length to conjure up the most disturbing and repulsive subtitle for a game yet. There is nothing friendly, cuddly or cozy about a machine for pigs. Men do not make machines that play with pigs, or sing cute songs for pig. No, there are only horrible and terrifying implications with this kind of machinery.

But please do continue with the conviction that A Machine for Pigs will be a nice and mellow experience. When it becomes a available on a dark and stormy night this coming fall, do let your guard down. Do think as you boot the game that this will be nothing to worry about. Put out all lights and play it in your damp and gloomy basement, far away from any kind of comfort, convinced that your are in for an relaxing trip.

You will then be unprepared for what will hit you, and will perhaps never dare to start your computer ever again, fearful of coming close to that machine. Your dreams will be filled with creaking machinery, the desperate cries of pigs, the rattle of chains and the dreadful feeling of something unspeakable is watching you from beyond. That is when you will regret thinking that A Machine for Pigs would be not a very scary experience.

Have a nice day!

Regards,

Thomas Grip Frictional Games"

Wut? ATDD is one of the scariest games this gen, but why is everyone like "ima sh** in mai pants" or "time to stack up on energy drinks" I really didn't find it THAT scary... Maybe its because i played it in the light?

Can't wait for this, wonder if they're upping the budget or tweaking the gameplay for this one.

Its going to be interesting to see how this new studio can do with the game. They obviously have talent, but many developers have talent and couldn't pull off a scary game if their lives depended on it. Pretty much the only thing we've seen from The Chinese Room is Dear Esther, so I'm interested in more than just the game, I'm interested in the quality of the developer.

playing amnesia with lights on is the wrong way Turn off lights , put the volume up and immerse your self . As for s*** your pants is just a metaphor dude ( the game along with penumbra are probably the only games that can achieve to a degree scare you this gen though )

Hope they add guns to this. Amnesia was good and all but it would have been much more fun with a .44 and a flashlight

BPoole96

Yeah, while they're adding guns, they may just as well add Markus Fenix and his happy "bro gang",remove anything resembling horror, and have a nice and shocking revelation at the end:

The machine for pigs is there only to make a tasty BBQ :P

It was more of a first person puzzle game while playing hide and go seek with a guy with a big mouth. A game, within a game if you will

The point of the game is to make you feel vulnerable and impotent, hence the Hide n Seek.

Get as technical as you like. You have to survive (you can die) in horrific scenarios, they're the major themes/genres of the game. KotOR has puzzles but you don't go crazy with the sub-genres.... but yeah I guess there are a lot of puzzles in Amnesia :| Horror/survival/puzzle.

I really hope this game seriously scares the hell out of me. I am playing through the first at the mo and whilst it did creep me out at times, I am used to it now and dont find it scary. Currently I am just walking around trying to figure out where I am supposed to go.

I was waiting for my turn to be the seeker. I would have done a much better job than the AI. I could open a door and hide between the door and the wall and he couldn't even find me

You can't! The thing rips people apart with his hands/fangs/things! Plus it was back in the day that guns were a distant thing...

Maybe add like a crossbow or a Katana with shuriken or something then. Wouldn't want to mess with the time period and break the immersion

Maybe be able to throw things at it... But I still think weapons would ruin the point of the game, which to make you crap your pants because all you can do is hide in the closet.

Makers Of Dear Esther and Amnesia ? My body is ready !!! I am pretty decencored these days, Amnesia was the only game that has heart my heart racing in a long time. Love horror games nothing beats that adrenaline Rush of being scared, dwelling into the unknown. I hope Fictional Games keeps getting support and the money they deserve, horror is such a dead genre is a nice thing to see developers not making a shooting game for once.

They could just give the thing projectiles as well. They could be like Spitters from L4D but constantly respawn so the suspense is always there. While you're solving puzzles you would have to worry about them coming in the room and spitting on you. That would be terrifying.

Actually this got me thinking, based on my experience, I would say that I am most scared when I have some kind of weapon, though preferably with not much ammunition or not very effective one.

And here's the logic behind it: If I don't have any weapon and I am just supposed to run away from monsters or hide somewhere, I feel like "defeated" already. It's like yeah come at me so I can reload again. :( In other words, the chances of survival are so small that I am not even affraid.

However, when I do have a weapon, suddenly I feel like I can make it. I just have to time my attack / defense / aim properly and it will be O.K. for some time. And that's where I get nervous and feel the tension the most. Because I am not just passively waiting until monster passes by me or trying to run away from it, but I have to overcome my "fear" and engage it in correct way. Best example would probably be some dark corridors with lurking facehugers in marine's campaign in good old AvP 1 before I memorized where they usually were.

Either way, I am not saying that Amnesia should use this approach. I just wanted to add something to the discussion - and maybe start little sub-discussion within - and see if I am doing it wrong. :P

So guise, in general, how do you feel about weapons / options to attack monsters in scary games? Do they add or remove tension for you?

Lol @ the people with the usual "I didnt find X scary".

Scary does not mean you have to be sitting there with your heart racing and nearly crapping your pants.

Saying Amnesia is not a creepy series of games is like saying you didnt find The Shining or The Ring scary. Mabey your just boring and taking things a little too serious?

Could work for some horror games, nothing scarier then running out of ammo during a monster attack.

Could work for some horror games, nothing scarier then running out of ammo during a monster attack.

They add tension, infact cry of fear did it perfectly.

Make ammo scarce, that gives the player a fear in the back of his mind that you will have to either fight or run. When there is no weapons you begin to realize the only real scares are the atmosphere, and you can always run into a cabinet and hide from the monsters Ala amnesia.

I hope machine for pigs pulls some **** like makes the user think he's safe in a cabinet only to have it tipped over and smashed to pieces.

That would be pretty cool. if you hid and thought you were safe only to have the monster rip the doors off it and you had to run again. Like you said in Amnesia you knew you were safe once you were in a closet. We need more fear and more uncertainty, like we don't know the limits of what the monsters are capable of. Amnesia you could hide behind a pile of pipes or boxes and the monster just looked at you.

Still love the game though :P

Not sure what I prefer, the fear of the unknown/questions unanswered can be one of the scariest thing, the human mind and imagination can scare us way more then any monster being shown to our face. However been playing Cry Of Fear and I have run out of ammo mid battle with one of the monsters freaked the hell out and died..I dont mind weapons but only if their *very* scarce. Condemned was GREAT and did this perfectly...until the end when it gave you a bunch of ammo and it made me feel too powerful.

condemned was awesome, I wish they would make a third but the 2nd game did so badly I don't think they will ever bother.
