Let me be honest, this isn't a ground breaking revelation, and alot of you already know this but I kind of just wanted to write something about it...

So on occasion I venture into System Wars, it's actually a really great place to get gaming news because these posters are so intent on defending there systems that they post around the clock and compile alot of news into one place. Anyways I really don't care too much about the system wars arguements in general, each system is appealing in its own right. However I noticed something that does kind of tick me off, it's the fact that once a game reaches mass appeal the gamers do a complete 180 on it. It's as if once a game becomes popular to the rest of the world then it's no longer cool or good. Like I said this isn't ground breaking, I've realized this for years but I'm in some ways gripping it better now. For instance, the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion when this game first game out that entire board skeeted to heaven about it, seriously you were hard pressed to find a non fan. Now? Apparently the game is disappointing, it's not enough like it's predecessor, the landscape sucks, etc. I can get if you're not a fan of the game, but this is complete flip-floppery.

Another example? CoD4, when the game came out it was essentially universally well recieved on the board, now? Well apparently it's riddled with issues, and it's the same concept as other games just stolen, and the multiplayer sucks, etc. I really remember not being able to find one critique of the game when it first came out on the board, now it's like some sort of awesome club everyone's joined.

Whether this is the effect of lengthened time with the game or some sick attempt at elitism I must debate. Quite frankly the latter is most apparent. It actually reminds me of music listeners with elitism, they listen to this band all the time, love them talk about them, then once they make it big? They've sold out apparently and the person who used to like them feels cooler for liking it before they made it. The same kind of applies to these kids, once something reaches the "dreaded" casual market then it's **** on toast.

This brings on a whole new issues, the whole idea of a casuals vs hardcores which is infuriating on so many levels. I cannot express how much I am irritated when I hear people acting better then other people because they're more "hardcore". Whoopity- **** -dooo, you play more obscure games then another guy, sweet. Alot of these posters have no business sense and don't understand that the casual market is in fact the back bone of the industry and without it we wouldn't have **** I am hard pressed to think of a more pathetic sight then a 13 year old, cheetoes stuck in his braces while he guzzles his "Bawls" scoffing typing away at his parents computer because some guy he saw pick up a casual game at Target. You have a different taste in games, that's fine, but don't belittle people for it (and I understand the irony of me belittling the 13 year old I just mentioned).

Some people I feel get into gaming for the wrong reasons as sad as that sounds. I just get the feeling that a few people get more into games not because they're more interested but because they've found some sort acceptance and superiority feeling. I know people are going to say I'm reading into this way too much, but I'm really not, look around and you'll see them everywhere. Videogames is such a ripe medium, I mean this thing is going to explode one day, congratulations on finding it before some other people, now be an ambassador to games or something, don't be a jerk-wad because you've found something cooler first.

---

Anyway's that's my little rant, it wasn't too well constructed and I didn't mean for it to come across as so condescending but it happened. I'm not referencing any specidic user or incident, it's just a trend I noticed.

I didn't read that all, but I swear that it is also a problem in game development that games have a great first impression but are ultimately shallow games. Oblivion is guilty of that definitely, and so are gears of war and possibly cod4 (never played the game). That problem is basically the defining feature of this gen

I deffinitly considered that, but I really don't buy it. I get the feeling that its a few gamers that might have that view and then a bunch of others jump on board because it's the way the trend is going, ya know?

With respect it has a lot to do with the wow factor. It happens with movies too. look at 300, that movie was insanly populer but didn't win a single award.

What, now people aren't allowed to criticise games for legitimate issues of depth without being considered "elitist"?

I mean yes, I do understand that there is a certain group of individuals who piss on anything and everything new under the sun, but some of their complaints with regard to games becoming "dumbed down" are legit.

Look at Oblivion compared to Morrowind, just with regard to player freedom.

In Morrowind you could kill anyone. That gave you a true sense of power, and place.

In Oblivion, quest specific characters, even minor ones, cannot be killed and are merely knocked out. This is obviously to prevent new players from killing an important character and forever destroying a quest line, but it takes away part of what made Morrowind so compelling.

In Morrowind you could go into a dangerous dungeon as a new player... and have your ass handed to you.

In Oblivion, your enemies are leveled, so there is never the sense of "man, maybe I should stay away from this ominous looking cave until I'm more powerful."

Those are just two examples, and there are many more.

I get it, there certainly is a "Cool Kids Club" for bashing on popular games, but just because a game is unfairly bashed doesn't mean that it should not be criticised.

Look at Halo 3: Is it complete garbage like many of the "elitists" claim it is? No, but its single player campaign is riddled with numerous issues, not the least of which is poor level design.

So, no, not really, I can't say I agree with you. Both sides take it to the extreme.

The one side says "ZOMG this game is noobified trash, lolz" whilst the other side says "no this is possibly the best game EVAR, you're just a stuck up elitist!"

The truth, I believe, oftentimes lies somewhere in the middle.

I found it to be the complete opposite. As soon as MGS fans found out you played as Raiden there was fan uproar, but soon after people realiseded they didn't control any differently so there was no real reason to complain.

Another game people have grown to love is Zelda Wind Waker. Possibly the most hated Zelda on release and now people love the game.

It's not that people can't complain, like I mentioned, there are naturally not going to be fans. But it's the blatant flip-flopping that I found irritating, I personally have never loved a game for 2 monthS then think it's absolute ass and so I don't understand the way gamers come to these conclusions.

How is this a blog post? It's not relative to my real life or anything of that sort, and it's a subject clearly worth debating. Or do you automatically think "OMG BLOG" once something breaks the amount of words you can read?

If you don't want to read it, move along, I promise I won't cry.

It's just perspective, that's all.

I mean, I loved Oblivion when it first came out, and I still love it, but in the time between its release and now, I have been able to really get into the game and fully explore both the good sides and the bad sides of it, and critically evaluate it based on pretty much all of the facts.

I mean, sure, people will always rant about how awesome a game is when they first play it; it's what they think of it after truly becoming familiar with it that really matters.

And it works both ways. There have been games that I hated at first, but then later fell in love with. Morrowind, incidentally.

That's just how honest criticism works; first impressions are rarely indicative of the true quality of what you are criticising.

The graphics of the games you mentioned make people initially think they're the bomb before they realise they are empty shells. Like when my friends and I played Assassians Creed, we were like, "Wow, this game is awesome! Look at everything you can do!" Two Assassinations later, we all thought, "Wow, this game blows. Is this really all you can do?" Oblivion took longer for people to realize it was a empty shell of Morrowind because there was a whole bunch of shine and physics in the game, as well as voice acting and animations that covered over the fact that it was a fifth of the game Morrowind was. Once the wow effects of the graphics wore off, people started realising, "Hey, this game isn't very good."

I never felt Oblivion was shallow in any way or form, so for that I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. But you must admit alot of solid games get a bad rap because the appeal to the masses. Lets look at the aforementioned Halo, clearly a controversial game, no doubt though it's a solid shooter. It no doubt recieves alot of criticism for the pure fact that it's enjoyed by the masses.

I don't feel like the MGS uproar over Raiden was ever just accepted, people just stopped whining, people will tell you to this day that it was one of the worst moves in videogame history.

I have to agree with this post, I have been a fan of System Wars for years and that is something very much running rife throughout this board. I am really enjoy playing games on all of my systems (except the last few nights not having power can do that). But listening to the number of people constantly slag off others because of them liking cames, using the term cows for someone who is against your opinion and therefore they must hate this console and are just a cow.

A great post and I understand where you are coming from and it is good to see someone else out there that can see much of the hypocricy of most of the so called and self proclaimed "gaming elite"

I just find it so irritating that people try to cause a rift in gamers, one thinking there better then the other because they play different games. I mean I'm all for arguing and saying "this game sucks and heres why" but I don't see the need to berate fellow gamers for liking it. Gamings a unique thing and for the most part the community rocks and is why the industry is thriving, but these few elitist's seem counter-productive to me.

Unfortunately progression does not include the past. Anything that reaches a high enough point it becomes veiwable over the fence. There's nothing many people like to do more than to knock down the stack of blocks once it gets big enough.

i know exactly what you mean, and it pisses me off so much. almost every popular game gets bashed somehow and people just cant seem to stfu, sit down and enjoy the game. If its universally well received at first then sudddenly becomes a stinking pile of crap, people have got a serious problem here.
