There is one thing which I don´t really understand about flops. I don´t see why it is a HUGE deal??

First, because flopping has nothing to do with a game the quality of the game by itself. A flopped game may be a very good game, and a game that didn´t flop may not be that good.

Second, the rule to flop is almighty gamespot. Gamespot is reviewed by one person, so our opinions are based (should I say biased??) on a single guy´s thinking. That is his job and I respect it, but consider a game that flopped because he thought it didn´t deserve a higher grade is ridiculous.

Third games flop because of hype, not because the game promises a lot. If that is so, people should start picking on fans, not games. Flopping shouldn´t matter so much in here. I know that many guys will say "if u don´t like it GO!" or "this is syztam WOOORS!!" but a little decency and better judgment wouldn´t kill anyone.

Anyway, that is just my thinking, but, what do you say about it??

People only use flops as amatter of ownage to a group of fans. The games themselves are not bad.

A game flops when it scores well below the hyped or anticipated scoring range. So if a game is hyped AAA and gets low AA for example. Still can be a good game.

It's terrible because the System Wars Bets Thread exists. Honestly, all this "AA" and "AAA" nonsense has little to do with the game itself. People just stake far too much on a game's score status nowadays -- for example, a respected user called TrueReligon_ has left the site as a result of losing a Metroid Prime 3 bet. His own fault for staking so much on so little? Perhaps, but since hardcore fanboyism runs rife on these forums, drastic bets like these are sometimes a necessity.. it's just the way it works.

Flopping only holds weight in SW. Seriously, I doubt that the majority of consumers give a crap that Metroid Prime 3 wasn't "AAA" at GS.

Use Gamerankings and Metacritic then, taking a sample from multiple sources is WAY more accurate if you believe ratings in the first place, just don't expect to be able to use them in SW. In here a game that scores a 9 is a flop if it's hyped 10.

If you are looking for logic and common sense look elsewhere because THIZZZ izzz teh SYST3MZ WAhhhhzzzzzz!!!!

I totally agree, but because of the groupthink that exists in SW certain people seem to take a great deal of delight in other system's games not reaching their hype.Take MP3 for example its still classed as a "great" game even if it didn't get AAA,but fanboys have blown it out of proportion and made real big deal out of it.It'll be the same thing when HS flops the cows will never hear the end of it.

cause fanboys were wrong about judging a game they never played.

Flopping is suppose to be a way to get fanboys to shut up hyping games that aren't released yet claiming their going to be the "best evar!!!", or my favorite the "halo killler". Being excited about an upcoming game is fine, but saying it's going to be awesome just because of some media BS is annoying. Now fanboys just hype games until the "hype thread" and then cop-out with a conservative estimate. I think the only fanboys that have got constantly burned by flopping are sheep, but I really don't blame them LOZ, and MP are two killer franchises but they just didn't really provide enough innovation in the series. Cows should be getting burned pretty bad but they rarely have exclusives and tend to cop-out in the hype threads. Lemmings have probably just gotten lucky so far with most of the hype actually coming from good games. Hermits I don't think even play this game, and if they do nobody takes hermits seriously on SW.

I think you nailed it on the head, but I would go one further and say Gamespot reviews don't matter AT ALL, people buy games now based on demos and word of mouth from fellow gamers, they no longer need to wait for a review by some nobody who can't rate games.

Form your own opinions about games, A flop means nothing if you like the game, in the same way some AAA games can leave you cold wondering what all the fuss is about. Forget all this nonsence about flopping and become mature gamers.

It's an excusefor lemmings/sheep/cows to "own" other lemmings/sheep/cows because they can't actually come up with any arguments.

For example, a smart person might come up with a flawless argument about why the Xbox 360 sucks. (Not saying it does) However, all the lemming has to do to disprove this argument, is state "lol metroid prime 3 got a 8.5"

See?

The problem is that people are way to invested in the scores that games receive because of internet forums and its basically a sign of how immature games are as a medium (I mean in terms of how long they ahve been around). The same kind of hype/statistic wars occur to a lesser extent with movies (read some of the lord of the rings/star wars fights at imdb), and its pretty stupid but is also fun to read. Its pretty telling that games are often reviewed on a 100 increment or 20 increment scale, movies on an 3 (thumbs up/down) to 10 increment scale and books are just reviewed.

Thanks for the support, but I do think that GS reviews are important. They are a guide to see which games to look for, however, as I said previously, it shouldn´t make the "all seeing truth that rules our lives"
