On my part, these were the considerations, in order,for me when I picked my top 5: library, gameplay and controls, graphics and sound

N64 for me

The PS2 no other console has had so much exclusive support.. Last gen was dominated by the PS2.

I have to say Xbox 360.

PS2 or SNES, hands down.

a tie between the SNES and the N64 for me. but i voted SNES.

PC and PS2, but I voted for the PC.

The PS2 is still the best because it had the best library of exclusive games.

The idea that PC is one continous platform is kind of silly. Not like you could have bought a pc in the 80's and still be playing modern games today on it. Just because there's no clear cut dividing lines (other than new Windows versions) doesn't mean PC doesn't go through generations. PC hardware has to be replaced more often than console hardware. PCs aren't even fully BC if you upgrade to play the new games. I've got plenty of old games, some as recent as the late 90's, that won't run (or at least not in a playable form) on my newer pc.

I love my old classic systems. I still have games and systems going back as far as the NES. But as much as I love those old games, it's more nostalgia than anything else. I mean, how many NES or SNES games are REALLY still worth playing? A handful? My favorite games from the 8 and 16 bit generations are all available (with improvements) on newer platforms. All the NES/SNES FF's were rereleased for PS1.

Which brings me to PS1. Impossible to ignore PS1, but even if you want to say it had the best library ever, you can't call it the best system, not when you can play every PS1 game PLUS PS2 games on a PS2. Of course, take that further, and early PS3 adopters have the greatest library of all time: PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. That's who-knows-how-many thousands of games spanning 1994-present.

1. PC. If PC is included, how can you choose anything else?

2. SNES. So many great games...

3. Gameboy Advance/Nintendo DS. Both are equal in my eyes.

4. N64. The best Nintendo system besides the SNES (the NES is good too but the games don't hold up).

5. Xbox 360. The modern day Dreamcast... except it has actually lived longer. The actually-awesome-for-once PS3 is creeping up on its status as THE hardcore gamer's system, but with so many great exclusive games (Dead Rising, Fable 2, Forza Motorsport, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise... not to mention Halo 3 and ODST :P ) and a great multiplayer service, it's going to be hard to top.

6. Dreamcast. The only Sega system I really liked. Real console gaming died with the Dreamcast.

7. PS3. It arguably has better exclusives than the 360, but it has weaker multiplats, with graphical compromises of the worst kind. If these issues could be cleaned up, it would be better than the 360.

8. PS2. Overrated, but it was home to some great games.

9. PS. Even more overrated than the PS2.

10. Sega Genesis. Very weak compared to the SNES, but it had some excellent games.

You seem to be missing the point. The PS3 has a dozen or so AAA exclusives, a dramatically less failure rate and is not "over" priced considering you're getting far superior hardware which again, is a fair trade off given the $50+ price than the Elite.

Its pretty close between the PS1 and PS2 for me.

SNES, easily. On second though, it's sort of a 3 way tie for me between the NES, SNES, and Dreamcast (I know it failed but it's games were amazing).

Overall, if i had to choose one, definitely the SNES.

IMO, of course. Really tough to choose just cause they're all so great.

Don't do this to me.... I've loved (almost) every console I've ever owned, from the SNES, N64, PS1, Gamecube, PS2, Wii, PS3, and to a lesser extent my 360 (hate the system, like some games).

If I had to pick which one has my favorites I'd probably go with N64. Now given the choice between the PS3 and the N64 right now, I'd choose the PS3, and same thing if you replace PS3 with a Wii, but for its time I wouldn't have chosen anything else and the experiences it gave were unmatched.
