Oh, wait this is another one of those "I made a popular game now I'm a visonary" kind of predictions.

These things always turn out to be true.

IronBass

I came to post the same thing

Come on 'Bass, you know great minds think alike. we obviously aren't as great as this guy though, but he's a visionary so that's to be expected..

The tables might turn where cheap disposable games become mainstream and consoles become niche, but just like PC gaming in the face of consoles, it will never die because there will always be a market for it.

If console gaming dies so does PC lol I love how you don't see the coralation If simplistic little games on ipad, and iphone..etc become big what the heck do you think happens to ""core"" pc gaming? lol

It continues to flourish?

You know it cracks me up how little people know about the period of video games after the market crash. Many people erroneously think Nintendo "saved" gaming without realizing that there was a thriving video games market after the crash.

PC gaming is not a niche market. It's actually a larger market than all of the consoles combined.

And why would that be? you mean some how the ""core"" pc game community is this unique, large interactive culture? its as small as it is on the Consoles, ""casuals"" control in every area Consoles, PCs...thats why the majority of revenue on last check and purchases were for MMO's and Flash portal facebook type games. Last checked the smallest input of revenue and game purchases was for "core" type games, Combined mmo's and flash portal games represented more. As for that what do you think is going to happen to most PC devs when they lose a massive chunk of revenue from console sales?

There aren't casual movies but there are blockbuster michael bay trash movies versus actual good movies. We tend to think that casual gaming tends to mostly be simple stuff with little depth that doesn't last very long.

and PC gaming is a larger market? nooo PC is a larger market PC developers like to consider much anything with a graphics card a gaming pc, But If you look at the graphs combined MMo's and flash portal games and facebook games make up a far larger chunk of revenue and purchases then do ""core"" games retail and digital. so PC gaming is in the exact same position as the consoles.

PC gaming was thriving in the 80's? lol no....

Consoles are dying. People just aren't as interested in them any more. If they released the Playstation 4 tomorrow would millions run out and buy it? The hype just isn't there any more.

What? No it wasn't besides the BBC and apple computers (more aimed at academic/work - but still had a thriving gaming community), there was the sinclair spectrum, Vic 20, commodore 64, Amiga and the Amstrad series, just off the top of my head. Even my local cornershop sold games for them.

PC gaming in the 80's=birthing.
PC gaming in the 90's=thriving.

something that may fall by the way side is not thriving, By the 90's PC gaming had produced a market that was viable enough to call it thriving.
Still doesn't change the fact If people stop buying PC's to buy smart phones that replace most of the functions they use PC's for, Start buying ipads, Android Xooms...etc Stuff that replaces even more what their pc does...Then ""causal"" smart phone gaming, ipad gaming...etc Is going to affect pc gaming. Then you have the fact that quite a few PC developers release Console games...do you think they aren't going to feel it with the complete loss of a revenue stream in Consoles?

If console gaming dies so does PC gaming it may survive it but it will be in the ground next to it soon enough.

You are a hardcore gamer it is a life****for you most likely. We will always play games but the casual market is what is in doubt on console. The playstation phone is going to crack open the gaming market on cell phones. So that decent games can be played on your cell phone.

Console won't go away they just won't do the numbers that they used to. Devs are going to go where the money is and the cell phone market is huge. The new unreal and crytek game engines run on cell phones. Clearly there is going to be a major shift in where people play their games. The portable gaming market is the future everybody should be able to see this.

I can say it is going to rain if I hear thunder and see the sky get cloudy. This is happening right now portable gaming is exploding faster than any other gaming market period. So much so that sony made the playstation phone to get a part of it. Next year cell phones will have ps3 power and will be a major force.

A billion dollar industry is not gonna die. At least not a fast death. Its gonna be a grueling and slow process if it does begin to happen. I have played on PC for a couple years now. I know this. A person who makes a popular enough flash game, making the same claims people have been making for over 10 years isn't gonna change my train of though.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31014/NPD_Digital_Used_Rental_Revenues_Near_3B_For_First_Half_Of_2010.php

"NPD's upcoming "Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend" report, to be released later this month, estimates that revenue from sources including used games, game rentals, game subscriptions, digital full game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile game apps combined to make up roughly 40 percent of total industry spending in the first half of the year.

The report puts the size of this market, which is not usually measured in NPD's monthly industry tracking reports, at $2.6 to $2.9 billion, or roughly 70 to 80 percent of the $3.7 billion spent on new retail sales of hardware, software and accessories in the first six months of the year."

"Casuals" have infiltrated every aspect of gaming. At least on pc developers don't have to deal with rentals and used sales on top of piracy.

He has no NO idea what he is talking about. He hardly even understands the fact there are different markets for games. Jesus how do these people get so far in life with comments like that. So a 5Min stupid block game is going to keep me satisfied more than the Latest Witcher game. Give me a break i mean really what a Tool.

Vinegar_Strokes

i know. these developer actually trying to make out they now anything about the games industry, its shamefull. its been proven time and time again if you real want an informed opinion on anything, then a poster on some internet forum is by far the most credible source.

Remember when Bill gates said nobody would ever need more than 640 kilobytes of RAM for their computers? People say ridiculous things regardless of what positions they are in. Just because Rovio made a succesful game doesn't make their opinion any more valuable. Are you honestly saying that anything they say is completely? Rovio's staff are mainly young people in their 20's or 30's, they are bedroom programmers, as if they know the industry like the back of their hands like Nintendo's CEO.

It could. The casual market is the only thing keeping consoles alive now. Gamers who play stuff like wii sports, guitar hero, or call of duty might leave if the trend goes mobile. Console makers cannot survive off hardcore gamers. Not even close.

Then again, it's all about content really. So long as there are console games with great content, there will be people to play them. The question is, will that group be big enough to justify the kind of production costs seen in games like halo or GTA.

Thesame could be said about any media, and I really doubt mobile being able to provide a console-like experience, though if it can (which is seeming more and more likely especially with thigns like the NGP with top-end graphics, PSN, and dual analog control), I have no problem ditching console gaming.

I don't think mobile gaming will ever provide a console experience either. A mobile device will never give you the same feeling you get from a big HDTV, a surround system, and an epic long game. But, that's not the point. The point is weither the mass market is more interested in the console experience or the mobile experience. You can make console games as epic and awesome as possilbe, but if people aren't playing...then there's no point in making big blockbuster games.

The reason why PC gaming and Console gaming will never die is the ever incresing technology boosts that come with these hardware devices. PC pushes the envelope, which evenutally finds their way into consoles which will fliter down to portables, which then move to Mobile. The quality of games will get better and better, but with the PC and consoles going to be vastly superior to gameplay, graphics and audio will be why PC and console games will not die. Mobile platforms will increase in their ability to play more and more complex games, but I doubt we will see any time soon, games that even close to what is being played on PC and Console, why. The GPU, sure, it is highly opimized for small resolutions, but, I want 1920 x 1080, or higher, high res textures all on my 46 inch TV or my 24 inch monitor. See the draw backs. We have seen the power required to produce games of that quality, when do you expect to see them in a phone, or iPad, not any time soon. I like the mobile platform, but they are not the same, and I doubt they will be the same as any PC or console, they will add another layer for those who like gaming, and sure, the creator of angry birds would love to see the same kinds of revenue that tradition AAA game can see (not always assured). I don't think I will be alive to see the death of console gaming and I can say it certainly won't be to mobile devices.

I know that, I'm saying the casuals will never just ditch gaming, all entertainementindustries would die without the casuals, but they don't.Gaming isn't just a fad, it's a major multi-billion dollar industry, casual gamers willl never just quit resulting in the death of gaming, just like casuals will never quit watching movies or listening to music. Even if they did, gaming did just fine before it caught on mainstream.

Not this gen. And Angry Birds is terrible. I can blame that mostly on the fact that my phone runs it silky smooth, then after a certain time it lags a LOT!

Besides, how many people do you think can consistently deliver a quality miniexperience? I feel like half the reason these games are successful is luck. Can we really agree that Angry Birds is a quality gaming experience? No. So why did it succeed? Annoying sounds, gameplay based on little more than luck, graphics aren't anything to write home about. So their next game won't meet the same success.

Angry Birds is ten minutes of fun tops. Once that 10 minute peak hits, it becomes very boring and stale. 20 hours in metal gear solid? Yes please. 5 minutes of super tank defense touch for $.99 . .. nah

The fact that a controller still exists is why these little touch screen games will never live long.

Even if they did, gaming did just fine before it caught on mainstream.

StealthMonkey4

It has never done without the mainstream. From pong, to mario, to tetris gaming has always gotten a lot of it's dollars from casuals. An even back then, games were made by 20 people tops and the idea of a game's budget even coming close to 1 mill was laughable. Today's core gamers alone could not possibly support developer's and publisher's costs.

Do I think consoles are teh doomed. Nah. Do I think it's possible one day in some hypothetical situation that all the games that casuals want could be found on cell phones and facebook and not on consoles? Yep. Do I think that situation would massivelyy hurt console makers, developers, and publishers. You bet.

It's true that games for mobile phones are growing rapidly but no consoles are not dying, where did he get the idea from? And I have no long attention spend on mobile games.

How can he talk about serious games? His game is cheap and not as famous as he thinks.dakan45

also their game angry bird is more or less just a ripoff of armored games, castle clout and crush the castle

i don't see why Angry Birds is so popular. You play it for 5 minutes and you know how the rest of the game goes...

As long as console gaming continues going mainstream, it's not going to go anywhere.

Vesterbacka = Tool. This just sounds like wishful thinking on his part.
