with PSN being free this whole time, we have all been lucky to get the service we had. since its a free network for users, its quite vulnerable because less money is going in to protect it. i am not suprised that someone has finally hacked it, even if it was just for fun.

for the people complaining, realize that this whole time it has been FREE. why should they sink more into protecting it if they dont charge us a dime?

it sucks this happened, and it sucks that as an outcome we might end up having to pay for service, but all in all an attack on PSN was going to happen some time or another and that time has come

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]

No one has a right to complain about this since these problems are sourced from the problems recently in japan from the earthquake no company could have kept their stuff online under such a scenario.
anon wont attack because they know people will draw that line they are attacking sony when they are having problems because of a giant earthquake that killed many people and hurt many others and ruined the lives of so many in japan...anon=heartless B*******

DoomZaW

Or maybe because it might a bit hard to hack an offline server?

At the time when I thought this down time was sourced because of the earthquake in japan my point was valid the only reason Anon had suspended any attack was because of the reasons I laid out...but it seems they attacked anyways so....Anon truly are heartless B********

oh and mods please just make a sticky for this stuff.

Anonymous is not the hacker that made PSN go down. They don't want to ruin the online gaming so they will do something else. The problem was that sony software is outdated or something like that.

Try Mario Kart Wii Because Brawl's online was horrible from day one since it is up to the developer to handle online and Masahiro Sakurai didn't care about online.

Also Mario Kart Wii is probably one of the best 1st Party online games.

Hacking itself is not illegal, Sony's lawsuit was over Geohot releasing the info online and possibly being paid for it (hence the paypal account situation.) Sony and Geohot, quite predictably IMO, settled out of court, so now if Geohot hacks another Sony system and release the information he'll be fined anywhere from $10,000 to $250,000.

This whole Anon thing is over Sony's removal of Linyx and OtherOS. They're trying to strong arm Sony into putting it back into the system.

Brb trying TvC(amazing game offline) Have to enter FC to play with anyone. This match could lag, and it couldn't. If i decided to challenge anyone else i have to enter his FC and do all of this all over again. What do i do? Stop the hassle and go SFIV/MVC3/MK9 on PS3. :D

So from what i gather they're fighting against "not having the rights" to hack their console because they bought it right??

When has ANYBODY had the rights to hack their console and 'have their own rights', companies are always clearly explicit about that, it's nothing new. It's not like Microsoft or Nintendo allow it either, so what has Sony actually done?

Microsoft and Nintendo won't sue you for doing it......

But they will try to brick your console if they knew who hacked it. They always put in fine print in the manuals that hacking and modding consoles is against the license that comes with the console.

If they don't brick your system it voids your warranty. Nintendo also always updates their systems to prevent stuff that are modded.

It won't.

OnLive doesn't work like that. There is no "main" server. It's just one huge LAN party. You'd have to hack each server individually. I've seen it happen. When a graphics card goes bad, a back-up server is up within minutes.

It's hard to tell because a back-up server would be up within minutes. I've seen GPU failures on the interface server and it only took about two minutes for a back-up to replace it.

Each service has its own server for each user. It would be impossible to take down a data center the way it's set up.

And there's five of them in the US alone.

For example, let's consider a typical user who tried out OnLive at the Game Developer Conference and played for five minutes (say, navigating the user interface, playing a few games, snapping and watching Brag Clips™, and spectating other users playing). Given that range of activities, the user easily used more than a dozen servers at different times. Just to identify a few: some OnLive servers ran (i.e. "hosted") particular games, other OnLive servers hosted the user interface, and others handled the distribution of spectating video streams and Brag Clips.

As the user transitioned from one experience to another (e.g. clicking in the user interface to start a game), OnLive would "hand off" the user from one server to another, transferring the "user state" (e.g. all the data unique to that user, including the live characteristics of the Internet connection) from the user interface server to the game server, while switching the live compressed HDTV video/audio from the user interface server to the game server. And, all of this occurred on a video frame boundary. So, from the point of view of the user, it seemed like the video was just continuing onward from the user interface video to the game video as if it was running on the same server. In actuality, it was seamlessly handed-off from one server to the next.

You think I'm lying?

Stop trying to lecture me on how the internet works when you don't even know how OnLive works.

You actually brought OnLive to the discussion?
Might as well mention iPhone whil you're at it.

Oh, but they do. ;)

Each data center (there are over five in the US) has it's own authentication server.

And if someone gains access to one, by exploit or tricking an admin, how do you know the others are not compromised?

It's hard to tell because a back-up server would be up within minutes. I've seen GPU failures on the interface server and it only took about two minutes for a back-up to replace it.

A presentation server is damn near disposable - for example, consider the web server in a multi-tier application; you can add web server nodes, load balance between them, take nodes offline, whatever. Application servers that require a secure environment or database servers are much less easily rebuilt. Yes, every user has a dedicated virtual node for gameplay or UI (and sometimes that virtual node may have the entire physical node to itself) but that's not the equivalent of PSN. We're talking about the underlying services, which would most certainly not be run on a per-user basis. For example, storage - do you really think that every time you purchase a game, they provision space for you on their SAN and put a copy there just for you?

Each game has its own cluster of servers. That's one of the main features of OnLive: Each game has its own hardware configuration.

Yeah, I read the link the first time you posted it. Repeating it doesn't change its content. We're not talking about the hardware that runs the games themselves. Here, let me repeat it for you: WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE HARDWARE THAT RUNS THE GAMES THEMSELVES. We're talking about infrastructure - the underlying systems that support the service.
