Mods: This isn't a normal Gears of War thread. The focus is not on Gears, just using it as an example.

"But during that thoroughly rewarding quality time with my sofa, I've noticed something that you really need to be aware of. The difficulty levels in Gears of War 3 are not what you'll expect of the series. They're not what you'll expect at all.

In short, the new Hardcore is roughly the equivalent of the Normal setting of Gears 1 and 2. And Normal? Well let's just say that your squad AI is now so good, and the enemy AI so weak and stupid, that I managed to get through nearly all of Act 2 without firing a shot outside of full-scale boss fights and the odd compulsory set-piece. Standard nuts-and-bolts warfare? The game didn't even need me there. Actually, let's not just say that. Let's watch that in this video I've made."

http://www.gamesradar.com/video-play-gears-war-3-hardcore-normal-it-virtually-plays-itself/

Huge Gears of War fan here and I'm sad that this game has become like many others and has been created to be dumb-proof. I thought Gears of War and Gears of War 2's Hardcore mode was super easy and wished they up it up a bit. Insane mode was also easy, and wished that became harder. BUT No, another dumbed down game and lets drop the diffculties of everything and make them standard.

Why are developers doing this? Making games easier and easier with each title. {Note: It is fine if they want to make it easier on the easiest settings, but why ditch your hardcore group??}.

Is it a self-esteem issue? Make gamers believe they are good but upping the diffculty title but actually going reverse in actual diffculty?

Thoughts System Wars?

When you have a blockbuster like Gears of War 3 you want to make the game as accessible as it can be. Its the same for many other games these days, developers/publishers don't want their games hard to lower sales.

Ugh..but I do and some others do. I love the feeling of going through and completing the "impossible". If the game practically plays itself for you, what is the point of the game? I hate casualization.

Wouldn't dumb-proof mean against dumb ? Like bullet-proof is resistant to bullets ? Is it :" Why are games becoming dumb ? Proof" But if you have proof why would you ask a question :P

Anyways, I don't see why people want all games to be hard and challenging. People play games to have fun and if your idea of fun is unintuitive and boring, then there are still games for you, but don't ask for other games to follow. Not everyone may like it, but majority wins.

If this was a thread about FPS or WRPGs then I would agree with you. However, it's not. Gears was never a difficult shooter to begin with. Until you have some more solid "proof" I will flippantly dismiss your opinion.

I never said that. But, most "challenging" games are challenging because you have to grind for something (boring) or the ui is so messed up and unnecessarily detailed (unintuitive)

And here I thought people played the game for fun and challenging in its own right.. Not for a achievement to measure their epeens.. Achievements shouldn't even have come into this discussion.

I'm fine with games having a easy mode, on-screen help or even a autoplay option for begginers and casuals but I'm not fine with games having butchered gameplay due to getting more casual friendly.

I didn't even see much of a similarity between normal on Gears 1 & 2.

Gears 1 was much harder on normal than Gears 2.

Gears AI was never something to brag about. Higher difficulties did the same thing enemies on easy, just could take more bullets while the player took less.

The first Gears was shooting gallery meets Adamantium Whack-a-mole as far as I'm concerned.

Eh, it's not a game trend. Resistance 3 is quite challenging, though maybe not as smack-in-yo-face hard as the first two.

Newsflash: Just about everything this generation holds your hand as you cross the safety-matted street.

Maybe Gears 4 will remove enemies entirely on anything below the top difficulty and just let you want around and explore :P

I was pretty upset after playing the demo for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon- that dogfight mode nonsense really upset me- the plane flies itself and you can't take down the "ace pilots" without it.

gears 3 is going to be awesome, the accesibility factor is in no way a bad thing. i'm sure insane will still be difficult; and why are you complaining about the single player difficulty of all things?

if anything; competitive play is where the true challenge lies, not in the difficulty of the single player campaign

it's still hardcore, there will be incredibly good players, and incredibly bad players, with no firm middle ground like in many other shooters; so overall, it'll be just as hardcore as the first two.

I love getting to the breaking point, and then you become SUPER focused and actually make it look easy. Challenging games are so much more rewarding, but I understand that not everyone feels that way.

At the rate that they are dumbing down games i would not be shocked if in the future you do not have to play the game anymore, you just watch it like a movie and wave your hand around every now and then to move the guy on the screen.

I wouldn't call that dumbed down, made easier for the audience, which is one that's extremely general and casual gamer. GeOW1, which coincidently I was playing a moment ago really does whack you over the head quickly with death, when you're out of cover though.

Does that mean lowering the difficulty of the hardest mode so those gamers can get those achievements?

Well sure, I'm mainly speaking of them knocking down the difficulty levels by a notch to make the game more accessible. They have no real reason to make any of the difficulty levels actually hard when it would only make many of the people upset that try it.

Making a game accessible means making it easy to get into, but hard to master. Lowering the difficulty of the hardest mode is not only alienating those who want a challenge, but insults our very intelligence. I'm not against making games accessible to new players, but this is not the way to do it.

Welcome to Casual Shooterville...population 30+ million per year. Its a dull trend but it's been getting worse since COD4 hit big. I actually think it started with Halo as the shooting mechanics in Halo are not difficult at all to master. Funny thing is...there is no evidence to suggest that dumbing down a game's formula translates to more sales: Socom has been dumbing down their formula for years, starting with Socom 3 and culminating in Socom 4. Socom 2 is by far the best selling game in the series. Battlefield has done the same with Bad Company and now BF3. Neither BC game sold as well as BF2 or other PC BF releases. BF3 might just because its releasing on all 3 platforms, but that's about it. I'm betting its PC sales do not eclipse BF2. Killzone dumbed down the classes and controls for KZ3. Its not selling as well as KZ2. Medal of Honor dumbed things down for last year's release vs traditional games...not that great in the sales department. So now Gears 3 does some of the same. Will it sell better? Remains to be seen, but odds are against it. In fact, the only game that has been able to dumb down controls to any success has been COD...the game everyone is copying, yet failing to see better results.

I could careless actually, I have beat both gears games on insane and halos on legendary, I dont care if they make them easier because most of the time you die on the hardest modes it is just annoying and tedious more then hard.

I was so dissapointed by the hardcore difficulty on GOW 3. You can run up to enemies and chainsaw them with ease, it's nearly impossible to die because you can be rescued by your team mates, the baddies take less hits, the AI is dumbed down. I liked the challenge of the original games. Hardcore should mean hardcore, if it's too hard and frustrating for people - pick the easy setting. I like dying several times during a level, it means you get your moneys worth and your getting a challenge. It's a shame because the gameplay and graphics are slicker than before. I hope the mutlplayer is better becasue the way things are going it's going to be the only place to get challenging AI. The campaign here is definitley the worst of the series, far too easy, I'm not sure I can be bothered playing to unlock the insane level. Ok that's enough ranting. Just a little dissapointed.
