Anyone buying consoles solely for exclusive games and/or collectionism?

Since I've switched to Pc gaming, I only buy exclusive (first print) games for consoles and even keep those sealed, for instance Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (which has become pretty rare to find in its original print). As a collectionist it somewhat matters to have first-print, sealed games as their value increases greatly overtime. Whenever I want to play a game, I actually buy it second hand or get a cheaper version like Platinum/Essentials/Nintendo Selects, ecc..

Anyone crazy like me on here?

I mean, Nintendo's stuff is always mostly bought for exclusives, and I have always owned a Nintendo console and handheld, so i guess yeah, I buy systems for exclusive games.

No collectionist. But, I've been buying consoles mainly for their exclusives since forever. Oh. I also prefer my sports games on consoles. During a console's lifetime, I may buy, more or less, 10 exclusives plus 5 sports (football, soccer, basketball - both pro and NCAA) games.

I just can't buy multiplats on consoles, as a PC version is usually cheaper and better 99% of the time.

I also get to keep my PC games with me as I move from system to system. Pushing graphics and settings higher if I want to replay them. While for console games you're stuck with rebuying remasters if you want to have increased resolution or if you want to play a Playstation 3 game on Playstation 4.

I also have some games still sealed, but when you think about it, do you wanna sell them even if they're worth let's say a couple hundreds dollars? If you're a collectionist, you may have valuable pieces, but in the end it's just an ego kind of thing.

Game collecting for the 7th and 8th generation of console is kind of an absurdity coming from a collector, especially if you're looking for profit margins or high market values. They mass produce almost everything and I can see very little on these systems retaining any kind of value whether they be opened or sealed. Most of the games that would retain value do not come out in the physical medium anymore, these obscure games that release digitally are typically the ones which would hold collector value and have limited prints, unfortunately though they are 99% digital now.

I hate to say this but you're putting your bets on the wrong horse here.

That's a good point actually, but with Pc gaming I feel like I don't really own a game. Digital has many pro's, but when it comes to consoles I find the lack of games in their physical form disturbing.

Actually TC i'm a huge collector, though I only bought a few games to keep sealed and I have to get them cheap to do that, most games go down in value from their initial price tag so that seems really excessive to buy something like Drake's fortune and then get another copy. Jak is like $10 new on Ps2 right now. Lots of mass produced stuff. And i'm definitely down with used games if they're old and expensive though I gotta buy them mint, so that takes a while to get good deals sometimes.

I'm 100% pro physical games so yeah that's one reason I game on consoles, and exclusives are the driving force for me to get one initially. A console could have good multiplats but without the exclusives i'm going to wait.

@Chozofication: Well, somewhat true, but there are games that it's actually hard to find new now, especially when series like platinum/essentials/selects/greatest hits/etc come out. I see people going nuts trying to find first-print titles like Heavy Rain and they're willing to pay a lot to get those. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is just an example, as I was browsing around earlier and it was sold at around 125 euros + shipping costs on a website; just beacause it was new and sealed.

Also, there's a very rare Uncharted 2's edition which is sold for thousands dollars:

Yeah the question of ownership is a good one. You as a gamer think you own a game. While the publisher believes he is selling you a license to play the game. Who is right ? Laws are not clear in that regard.

But just as say your PC games are locked to say Steam or Origin... Your console games are also locked to a certain system. So there isn't much difference if I'm honest.

I only play exclusives on my PS4, which is probably why it's been gathering dust for several months.

But you own all the games on console, they're locked to the console but you also own the console, it's a physical thing not a service and everything is in one place, nothing's disjointed between multiple platforms or in PC's case services.

If someone has 400 games on steam, that's 400 games you don't own. You own 400 ps2 games (which, damn you hoarder) you own 'em all and can sell them, loan them or just have them there.

But I know what you meant, in any case you have to buy something from a certain company to play the games and can't just buy the games.

@aia89: No, I don't buy anything solely for it's exclusive games. I prioritize performance over them cause most games aren't worth dealing with the excruciating experience that's tied to them, especially once you consider that there's nothing exceptional about those games.

Yes, that is a good point. You can indeed resell your games on consoles. With steam or origin all you can do is ask for your money back.

But I was thinking about it like this: If steam shuts down you lose access to all your games. But say you own a PS3 with about 100 games. Than your PS3 breaks and they are no longer making new ones, you won't have access to any of your games either.

Of course buying a second hand console is a possibility, but presume that wasn't the case?

I find a lot of joy in collecting games. I play them, don't get me wrong, but I find the thrill of collecting very appealing.

I especially enjoy collecting WiiU exclusives and Gamecube titles. I buy almost all WiiU exclusives on launch save the really bad ones, and I scour Ebay a lot to try and score some good deals on Gamecube titles. I also really like collecting/playing niche PS4 titles. I'm a closet weeb, so I like the Japanese style exclusive games for PS4 as well.

Sure, hypothetically at the point where there are 0 working Ps3's waaaaay down the line and no parts to fix them, emulators are there. You'll still have the games and can legally play them so it doesn't negate the point. I generally don't like using them though except for quick tests. Can't beat native hardware.

But Atari's still work so i'll have a working Ps3 or whatever for a long long time, granted there are more moving parts that might need replaced but yeah. As for older consoles i've only got the 6th and 7th gen consoles atm so it shouldn't be too hard to always have a working one :]

I purchase consoles because I like playing in consoles. As for collectionism, well, it's limited mostly to limited/collector's editions, even though I love physical copies 99 % of the games I own are digital.

Those are the sole reasons to own a console so I would assume so.

I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne at one point.

Yeah my old SNES still works perfectly fine too ^^

I'd say if you own anything but a 360 you'll have a console that'll last you for a very long time, haha

(But I have a good feeling that Valve will be around for a long time too)

Also, I like emulators for a "worst case scenario" because I feel games should have legacies. Like that one website with all those playable DOS games, I love it.

I completely agree, emulators are important. I wish someone would make an Xbox emulator, seems no one cares about that console lol. Or it's pretty hard to emulate for some reason.

I've got a slim 360 so hopefully it lasts a while :P

Well sure. But no I don't keep sealed first copy of games. I buy consoles for games the other I own wont get. If its something I really want to play like Rise of the TR or QB I don't care if it eventually goes to PC. I want to play those games asap, so I make sure I can. I don't know when my time on earth is up, and I am not bringing any money or things with me so I buy what I want to make use of for reasons all my own.

@Chozofication: Don't worry. Slim 360s have a way better heat disposal system and don't overheat.

It's the people that bought a 360 on launch, that got a system prone to overheating. But it was a good lesson for me. Buying a console on launch is a bad idea :)

I collect sealed games. I buy sealed games cheap and then resell them 5-10 years down the road. For instance, i have 5 copies of Skyward Sword sealed, 7-10 copies of Metroid Other M, 3 copies of Mario Galaxy 2, etc. If i see it for usually under $19.99 on Amazon, etc, i buy it. Goes for 3DS, DS, whatever i find good.

On special editions, limited, collectors, i dont like these too much. I usually preorder them, open them up to play the game, then i sell whatever is in it but keep the game. For instance i sold my whole Xenoblade Collectors Edition within the first couple weeks of release, it sold pretty good and almost paid off the game itself.

Well, kind of.

I get games that are interesting just for the collection or retro pile, but i don't get everything that's a rare game.

Plus, scalpers here are brutal so i don't try and join their racket.

My main platform is the X1 but I have a PS4 and a WiiU, and I only play exclusives on those. Also I play only exclusives on PC. I don't buy to collect but I don't sell my physical games either.

@aia89: I buy mostly Nintendo exclusives for my Wii U. I do have rare collector games like Tengen Tetris, a sealed copy of Working Design's Lunar 2 (PS1) & a few other PS1 games. I need to get rid of all this stuff. Most of it I'll never play again anyways.

You can make a couple hundreds bucks by selling your sealed Lunar 2.

Yep, exclusives are the only reason I'll buy a console these days and even that's becoming a tough sell.
